So, David Cross (see what he liked in 2007) has a part in the recently released CGI/live action family movie Alvin and the Chipmunks. It didn't take long before message boards and blogs were alight with Cross fans (and people who think money grows on trees) crying 'sell out!'. Of course, this silly backlash on its own certainly didn't merit a defensive move by Cross. However, a few weeks ago, Patton Oswalt (see what he liked in 2007) published a characteristically funny and insightful myspace blog. Like most of his blogs, it was a good read and nothing within it struck me as particularly provocative, but to Cross this blog contained a stinger:
Oddly enough, both Brian Posehn and I were offered the part of Ian, the agent. We both threw the script across the room in disgust. David Cross caught it.Oh no he di'int!
These three sentences, coupled with a pre-existing backlash, provoked a whopping 5-part response from Cross which sets out to not only counter Patton, but to also address the petty whining of legions of disappointed Cross fans. For me, no explanation was needed; a person needs work. And to be honest, I found his 5 part response to be a mega-invaluable resource for learning what Cross has been up to these days.
But wait.... Patton ain't done. Via the Onion AV Club, Patton unleashed a counter-letter in response to David's treatise. That same day, Steve Hyden at the Onion had some strong, yet not altogether off-base, words on the subject. With message boards and commenters in full throttle, it looks like the argument is far from over. Who doesn't like cyclical arguments and flogging dead horses?

I still kind of want to see Alvin and the Chipmunks...

I'm amazed at how much heat Cross is getting for this, but no one mentions Jason Lee at all. Doesn't anyone remember that Jason used to be a skateboarder? And all of his early acting roles were in indie, hip-ish movies?
At what point did it become acceptable for him to STAR in this movie yet not ok for Cross to have a small role in it?
And this is where Black Beauty does a little mounting of his own...

Hyden gets quote of the day: "Confessing that you’re doing bad work does not make doing bad work OK."
I like Cross a lot but Hyden's piece was spot-on.

i haven't read anything about this, but what exactly is patton oswalt's problem with the movie? that it's super mainstream or something? david cross has been in lots of mainstream movies. or is it just terribly unfunny? the alvin eating poop scene in the commercial didn't seem very sophisticated, i guess. but then that freakshow cartoon wasn't very funny either, and it wasn't aimed at kids.
that all said, i loved alvin and the chipmunks when i was a kid. i'm gonna see this when it's on video. i'd have prefered flat animation, but i guess there isn't the same kind of money in it.

wasn't Patton Oswald in that Disney rat movie? Is he really one to talk?
Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2008 4:16 PM
Still waiting for the Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse movie.
Posted by drewo | January 4, 2008 4:32 PM
Yes but that Rat movie was actually quite good. I have nothing against David Cross doing the Chipmunks film. People need to eat and drink.

um, am i the only one who thinks david cross is being a bit of a sensitive asshole? did any of you acually read what i did? osswalt doesn't actually insult him in any way that demands a five part response.
i guess it's annoying to have people drop the "sell out" bullshit at the drop of a hat, but i think his anger was misdirected.
i love both osswalt and cross and think they should hug a little. and who cares if they're in shitty movies once in a while? they can still bring the funny and that's what matters.

Cross is the turd in this one. He took super offense to something Patton meant nothing by. Patton says the script flying joke was a reference Cross said to him and year before about Patton taking a quick role in a movie Cross passed on. Cross just didn't remember that and felt he had to justify his move. Patton in his rebuttal, took potshots at himself (he was the buddy in King of Queens after all). Patton actually turned the Alvin movie role down for Ratatouille's main lead. Looks like he made the much smarter choice.
In response to Jason Lee not getting any flack, the dude's been making shitty movies for awhile and everyone knows he selling out ever since Earl was on the air.

Did you really just say "bring the funny"?

Oh and David Cross just obviously hates himself.

shut the fuck up you comedy nerd (to no one in particular)
Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2008 5:43 PM
I'd say Lee started heading down the craphole once he became a Scientologist and had a kid. case closed.
Posted by j | January 4, 2008 6:40 PM
I think Cross is hilarious, by far one of the best comedians out there but Steve Hyden is exactly right.
Posted by banjoandro | January 5, 2008 11:28 AM
i'm glad no one on this post sells out.
Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2008 3:18 PM
i think i might have sold out... how can i tell?
Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2008 5:00 PM
^I'm not sure. But if you did , give all the money you got to me. I won't tell, no one will know, and your indie cred will be safe.
Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2008 6:30 PM
fuck you guys, nobody who names his son piloninspektor is a sell out.
Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2008 6:49 PM
*pilotinspektor
Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2008 6:49 PM
I don't think anyone is particularly angry that David Cross—or any comedian—took a role for money, but that David Cross is a hypocrite who believes he's beyond reproach since he'd rake other comedians through the coals for doing the same thing. THAT'S annoying.
And honestly his act—as of late—has become tedious and unfunny. How many different ways can one hear him air his hatred of his dog? Any other comedian would be lambasted for that horrid act, but he's been milking it for the past few years.
Loved his work on Mr. Show, but past that I really can't find any of his independent comedy work amazing or self-sustaining.

"fuck you guys, nobody who names his son *pilotinspektor* is a sell out."
... poor kid!
p.s. i saw Alvin in the theatres with my 60 year old stepdad and his neighbors kids and we all enjoyed it. its not about the money or the cred; grow up people! ... and that includes you Mr. David Cross - do you think your fat-pocketed employers for this film will take kindly to reading your defensiveness about how much a product you're involved in with them sucks? THAT's just not professional!
Posted by su | January 6, 2008 3:34 PM
if David Cross has a google alert... does that mean he, David Cross, gets a message each time we comment about David Cross? if so, hi David Cross!
Posted by Anonymous | January 6, 2008 5:20 PM
jason lee still has a fuckin mighty tre flip, so don't worry.

skateboard cred is to the Euro what indie scene cred is to the crappy loserish US Dollar.
