Girl fakes dad's death for Hannah Montana tickets

Hannah fans

An essay that won a six-year-old girl tickets to a Hannah Montana concert has been exposed as a fake. The essay began with the line: "My daddy died this year in Iraq". A spokeswoman for the contest's sponsor said the girl's mother told company officials her daughter's father died in a roadside bombing in Iraq on 17 April. The spokeswoman said Priscilla Ceballos had now admitted it was not true. [BBC]

what grounds do they have to take the tickets away if they've already been distributed? it sounds low, but i give the mother credit for being clever enough to basically guarantee that her kid wins the stupid contest.

i'm sure plenty of people on here would do ridiculously low things to get free access to a sold out radiohead show or whatever.

Wow, so now there's a Hannah Montana tag?

i agree with the person above. they got scammed, that shit happens. and then the lady played them in the press for fools. kudos, stranger!

"what grounds do they have to take the tickets away if they've already been distributed?"

What do you mean by "distributed"? I assume the concert tickets (along with the plane tickets) had not yet been physically transferred. Revoking the prize after informing this girl that she won is something that is probably covered by a catch-all provision, such as "contest administrators may, for any reason,..." in the rules.

"it sounds low, but i give the mother credit for being clever enough to basically guarantee that her kid wins the stupid contest."

It does sound low. You are a twat.

I can't believe someone (i.e., you) actually came to the defense of that witch.

i banged that woman on the left years ago, so there's a good chance that little fuck trophy belongs to me. damn.

Did someone just give kudos to the woman that lied and corrupted her daughter for concert tickets? It would be one thing if they were starving and she lied and cheated for some bread. However, with that said, I think it's funny in a "holy sh!t, people are so ridiculously evil nowadays" way. Also, Hannah Montana sounds like a stripper name.

2 Cents,

Hannah Montana sounds like a porn star's name. if she was a stripper, it'd just be Montana.

claiming your husband died to win a contest sucks.
iraq sucks.
culture sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2008 10:41 AM

Assuming the tickets had not been physically transferred and the contest had some clause allowing them to be revoked for whatever reason, then it's fine. If the tickets were distributed and then whomever handed them out demanded them back, that wouldn't be fine.

Just because the mother/daughter did something unethical doesn't automatically mean that they violated a contest rule. I'm not suggesting that I morally agree with what they did, nor am I coming to their defense. I'm just pointing out that they may not have done anything inappropriate in terms of the contest.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2008 11:04 AM

if the contest didn't stipulate the essay had to be true i don't see any violation even ethically

cost of 2 hannah montana tickets...$110

teaching your kids to have no morals...pricless

Posted by voiceless | January 2, 2008 7:22 PM

Clever, yeah, sure, totally. But cooperating with or involving your child in a lie, especially a lie of such a large magnitude, is still completely unethical. To let such a slight go completely unpunished is tantamount to saying it's okay. I think we can agree that this mother did wrong. Even if her kid thought this up, she is still the adult that should have drawn the line.

On the other hand: This posting and the BBC article are both short on details. Where is the father if not dead in Iraq? I really wonder what kind of events led up to this situation. Maybe they could sell movie rights and buy the damned tickets?

The scumbag mother should have just said her kid has a terminal illness instead, there is no way to prove the kid doesn't....for that matter the mother can probably con the "make a wish" foundation into doing whatever her kid wants as well...

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2008 8:49 PM

god who wouldn't fake their dad's death for tickets to see hannah montana? and if her dad's in iraq, well. she should still get those tickets.

Posted by Mandy | January 3, 2008 7:53 PM

Right, Mandy, like she's the only little girl who wants to see this Hannah Montana shit and has a parent who's in the military and is in Iraq or Afghanistan. You're a moron.

Anyway, her mom apologized on TV -- click the link in my signature.

Posted by Machiavelli | January 5, 2008 1:25 PM

It was terrible and all, but hey, the girl's only six. Her mom said to do something and promised her Hannah Montana tickets, she'd do it. The poor girl had the tickets taken away, you have to feel bad. She wasn't old enough to know much better. I mean, sure, she's six, she should have some sense of morals, but come on. She's only six.

Posted by alix | January 8, 2008 8:07 PM

It was the mom's job to have taught the little girl the difference between right and wrong, she obviously failed miserably.
