and A-Trak and Kid Sister too....

Kanye West, Kid Sister and A-Trak at the museum

Besides the fact that he was wearing what I think was a big, nasty fur coat, Kanye West's surprise set at the Flavorpill 'One Step Beyond' party in the Museum of Natural History in NYC last night was pretty sweet (Jan 25, 2008). More photos below...

Kanye's appearance made up for the fact that I missed the Cool Kids. I got inside right when Kid Sister was taking the stage. She played for 15 minutes, and then brought Kanye on. They played their song together, and then he played maybe 5 more. Then A-Trak kept it going until the 1am closing time.

it was amazing. the crowd, understandably, went apeshit.

i think the fur coat goes with the teddy bear theme.

Looks pretty wild. Simian Mobile Disco is going to be what Justice should have been.

one of the worst run events i have ever been to.

first of all, i asked my tickets to be mailed to me and they never were. i had to call and obtain a new confirmation #. when we got there we had to stand outside in a line in the freezing cold while pompus rent a cops were yelling at us. once we got in we were met with another long line for will call and longer line for coat check! after about 35 minutes of all this, we finally enter and go to get drinks only to be told we need to wait in another stupid line for drink tickets.

the performances and atmosphere were great but never ever go to an event at the museum like this.

who runs this crap ?

Omg shut it you dork idiot. He played 5 tracks. Big deal. I was at the show. It was good but I mean cmon now. You need to get out more

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 12:21 PM

"after about 35 minutes of all this"

you only waited 35 minutes? I think it took me an hour to get in, and don't even get me started on the process to get drinks. The real bartenders stood there doing nothing, while the line to purchase a beer ticket was 10-20 minutes long minimum, not to mention a huge, unorganized mass of people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 12:21 PM

How was the Cool Kids set? I just got there for the last song, but they seemed to be much more shouty than their records' super laid back delivery.
Watching Kanye's converse with his bodyguard, one did get the feeling it was not planned that he'd do a set like that.

Word around the campfire is that Kanye and an unnamed artist are going to be doing a surprise appearance at the Dj Shadow show tonite at Irving.

the fur coat doesn't even look nice. actually, it looks like shit. if you're going to have an animal(s) murdered for fashion, it might as well look nice, right?

Posted by stephan | January 26, 2008 1:12 PM

The night was crazy, the entire show was ridiculous and Kanye's impromptu set put the icing on the cake.

Waiting outside and freezing my ass off, def. not fun but luckily it was only for 15 minutes. To the person complaining about the wait for drinks, I never had to wait on line once last night.

Kanye West shocked New York partygoers when he jumped onstage and rocked New York's American Museum of Natural History on January 25. The crowd was all revved up for Chicago emcees the Cool Kids, newcomer MC Kid Sister and DJ A-Trak when the more popular Chicagoan made a surprise appearance.

West performed his latest hit 'Good Life,' along with 'Can't Tell Me Nothing' and 'Stronger.' This rare appearance may signal the beginning of West's resurgence after laying low in the wake of the sudden death of his mother, Donda West.

West has recently been seen hanging with Jay-Z at his new 40/40 Club in Las Vegas, playing Connect Four with Beyonce, and catching a New Jersey Nets game with both Beyonce and Jay-Z.

why would he be at the dj shadow show instead of the kid sister/chromeo show tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 1:38 PM

I wonder if Kanye will show up this Friday when Kid Sister and A-Trak play the Natural History Museum in LA.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 1:38 PM"

Well, just taking a guess here but one could think that maybe he would not do the more expected thing. Like show up at the show of his dj's brother. Because we all know Kanye is such a predictable kind of artist.

The show was sick. I didn't have a ticket, but I was able to get in without much problem. The drink ticket line was annoying, but we just got 12 the first time we waited so that was enough for the night.

To the people who are saying Kanye's set wasn't that big of a deal: You do know that it was his first on-stage appearance since his Mom died, right? It's not going to shake the world of Hip Hop, but it's a very very cool bonus after an very good show.

I'll be back for more shows there.

i got there early, i went right in, bought my tix there and got a front row spot no problem. haha but i might be the only one. as soon as i dropped my jacket off at coat check i turned around and the line was GINORMOUS!

Posted by trisha | January 26, 2008 2:14 PM

well - it's his first US apperance - he did a show or two overseas afterward rapping up that tour

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 2:14 PM

Yes thank you. You beat me to that answer. Anon 2:13pm you are an idiot. It really was not that big of a deal. Now a full Kanye show might have been something different. Don't try to make a mountain out of a molehill, please.

I liked walking around the planetarium with a beer.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 2:51 PM

I liked leaving my empties on asteroids.

A-Trak looks like Sufjan Stevens

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 5:14 PM

i shook kanye's hand after he got off the stage. he's way short.

also they should've done something cool with that bigass death star hanging over our heads.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 5:18 PM

awesome concert. kanye's set was cool, but not a milestone. definitely worth going to... i feel sorry for anyone who turned their nose up at this.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 5:56 PM

Anon 12:21......you take this all far too seriously

Posted by dkeady | January 26, 2008 6:05 PM

people, i feel sorry for you. go check out some coltrane or bach.

"people, i feel sorry for you. go check out some coltrane or bach."

Yeah, I heard Bach is playing at the New Museum down on Bowery with Santogold opening. It's gonna be off the hook.

show was fucking rad!!

Posted by shaneeza | January 27, 2008 7:13 PM

the show was amazing BEFORE kanye showed up...for 20 bucks!? next month is jazzy jeff...i will definitely be there. for me the drink lines were fine

Posted by dancintrudy | January 27, 2008 8:18 PM

Yes, it was badly organized but the performers all made up for it. Kid Sister's hair was awesome! And it was great to see Kanye in such a small place for only $20! And then going to see "Collisions of Change" or whatever the planetarium show was called narrated by Robert Redford while drunk--perfect ending to a great night.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 11:31 AM

BV forgot to mention that SU was there too!

& flavorpill is a great organization! and the event was organized just fine imho given the location

big ups to all the museum staffers getting jiggy even before doors opened!

Posted by su | January 28, 2008 11:40 AM

so kanye played good life, can't tell me nothing and stronger? that was it? still pretty cool.
