Laura Marling is in NYC

17-year old Laura Marling from the UK
Laura MarlingLaura Marling

Among the current crop of young female singers from England (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al.), Marling stands out for a couple of reasons. At seventeen, she’s the youngest of the lot, and, as an ethereal folkie, she’s on a different course than her more pop-centric compatriots. Her songs are incisive, haunting, and lyrically barbed. Jan 18 - Union Hall Brooklyn, New York (TONIGHT)
Jan 19 - Sidewalk Cafe New York, New YorkShe also played The Annex, and I think Maxwell's. Video below....

Better than what most of us were coming up with when we were 17.

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2008 11:50 AM

so she'll be a coked out whore next year with a miscarriage by 20?

point: blogs.

Well to be fair she is the one with real talent.
More Joni Mitchell than Ian Dury. Well actually no if she was Ian Dury she'd be good. She's good anyway. And Kate Nash Lily Allen are spider babies.

"more of this crap? good damn...this is like big beat stuff in 1997."

They are more like boy bands. Manufactured pop for the masses. The machine will keep on churning out these artists as long as people buy into it.

You guys are ridiculous. At least she has an ear for melody and lyrics and has a good voice, and she's only 17. All you indie people do is complain about successful music, and praise all the indie crap that all sounds exactly the same and isn't musical at all, just "different." The indie movement is more like boy bands in the way that they are all the same and have no emotion or musical aspirations, just the desire to jump on the bandwagon with every other indie band that claims they are from Williamsburg. Sometimes different is good, but music needs to be musical, and at least this girl is musical.

"Manufactured pop for the masses. The machine will keep on churning out these artists as long as people buy into it."

She's a 17 girl without a label.

Relax.

I guess I'll be the first one to say this: She's hot.

To the person who said Laura will be a coked out whore by 20 you are completely wrong. She doesn't do drugs and hardly drinks, and has a lovely long term boyfriend. I know this as I am a family friend of hers.

She also doesn't want to be compared to Lily Allen/Kate Nash, I think her music is completely different and far more interesting.

She is also not part the music industry machine, although signed to virgin. She is an individual and has not been nurtured into some indi kid by her label. It is all her own music and vigin respect that, from a very young age she was a very talented musician and plays a number of instruments.

If you don't like her music that's fine, but don't presume to know who she is and what she will turn out like, she hates the fame side of it and is ONLY in it for the music.

I just saw her play at Union Hall and she was phenomenal. I feel lucky to have seen her in a small space - actually lucky to have seen her at all.

I've been to two of her shows in Dublin and she is absolutely amazing. Nothing like Lilly Allen or Kate Nash, AT ALL. Just because they're all from the U.K and are women you can't just categorize them together.

SO, SHUT THE FUCK UP.

"Phenomenal" is what you make of it, I guess. THESE TOOTHPICKS ARE PHENOMENAL!!!

She's good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see her again. Maybe I'll hit up a headlining show in five years, when she's more interesting. If she's opening for someone who's actually interesting, I'd probably show up early.

oh, i want to go to the show tonight. hmm but idk how worth it it will be. if i have time.

Actually she is REALLY good and has a great career ahead of her. Good Call, BV. I went to the Sidewalk show last night and it was wonderful. Her lyrics are way way beyond what a 17 year old girl would usually write about. Her music made me think of things like Kate Bush, Sheleigh McDonald and Vashti Bunyan but with more to it and a modern sound. She is intense when she plays. A very crowded Sidewalk crowd came out. They removed all the tables to fit everyone in. James Iha was there. Lookin forward to seeing her the next time she is here.

She is the real deal.I've been listening to music for 35 years and have very eclectic tastes : cocteau twins, nick drake, 70's miles davis, kate rusby, joni mitchell,eno,60's & 70's the who, biosphere,pco,9 lazy 9,m ward, tortoise, papa m,durutti column, yo la tengo, etc and always looking for something new.In recent years i've found it difficult to find anything that really grabs me. Laura Marling is amazing and i'm playing her album and ep's over and over something i haven't done since i was in my 20's.
