Lefsetz on Springsteen selling VERY advanced tickets

"You had to put tickets on sale for JULY? What's the reason? I don't even know what I'm doing in FEBRUARY, never mind JULY! But you had to take all that money out of the marketplace, you had to earn all that interest. And to think you built your reputation as a man of the people... Bruce, when you were growing up in Asbury Park did you buy tickets for a gig SEVEN MONTHS AWAY? Did you even have the MONEY FOR IT!" [Bob Lefsetz]

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Springstein gets paid when the show happens and not months in advance of a show. It is the promoter that takes in that ticket revenue early. That being said, I find it ridiculous that events are sold that far in advance.

Can we ask - who gives a fuck? If they went on sale in April instead of December, does it make much of a difference to those who will go (like me)?

Lefsetz writes a lot of great material, but his "I'm disappointed in Springsteen" meme is getting old.

hahahah! this is what i thought when we bought our tickets mid-december. talk about planning ahead! hope none of my friends get married july 28, i'm busy.

When I was seven years old my first concert was KISS at MSG. I got those tickets about seven months in advance (the price was 9.00 on the ticket). What's the big deal? This a##@le needs to relax. Don't go to the concert, or buy the tickets in June for double the price. If you ask me, Bruce is doing everyone a favor by giving everyone time.

Well, as far as I can see, you're going to see Bruce in July. Don't make any plans for that day.

Does it really matter when they're sold anymore? All the tickets will be bought up by scalpers (I mean resellers) within seconds, and he'll be free to buy them for $1,000 a pop whenever he wants.

This isn't very unusual , Big artists / tours / venues always plan well in advance and go on sale way in advance... it has nothing to do with greed just good planning...plus if there is need to add more shows there's more advance notice to do so...arenas just cant keep dates open for a long time, especially with sports teams schedules, etc if you look at MSG's site for example you'll see tickets onsale well into September.....well Celine Dion tickets...but tickets nonetheless....sometimes people just need shit to write (and complain about)

What's getting tired is this idea of Springsteen being a "Man of the People" schtick. He is a very flawed person like the rest of us and much of his "persona" is a big ol pile of nonsense. Ask many people who actually know him, have worked with him or had dealings with him and see what they think to get the real idea.
Also in response to Skippy's comment above. Anyone who would pay 1000 dollars for a scalped ticket at Giants Stadium for any show is a fucking idiot. Those tickets will be going for peanuts outside the venue day of show.

I've stopped reading Lefsetz a long time ago. He's tiring to read, ESPECIALLY when he USES those CAPS so OFTEN in every SENTENCE! I can't trust anyone who writes how much they love the Eagles new album yet finds time to trash the Shins and CYHSY.

springsteen is actually a great guy considering his success and status...most musicians are douche tools after they play bowery ballroom once.
Considering his success and and status he gives alot back to where he is from (asbury park) through charity and benefits.
He hangs out at bars and brings his kids to shows like any other person. One of his kids favorite bands, "Streetlight manifesto" played somewhere down south, trailer was stolen and they were out 80,000 in equipment. They had to borrow equipment just to play the final stop at home in jersey and bruce brought his kid and cut them a check for new equipment.
If thats not being for the people I don't know what is...thats f'ing amazing if you ask me.

What a pointless complaint. I woke up at 10am on a Saturday in March to buy Daft Punk tickets for August because I knew I would go....and that show didn't even sell out quickly like Bruce will.
Isn't it better to have enough time to plan around the show? He obviously just couldn't think of anything else to talk about.

seriously...bruce would sell out if it went on sale a week before the show. Whats the difference if it went on sale three years ago. At least you have time to plan around it, people come from all over to see him play. Not to stereotype but the average bruce fan cant just go to a concert any old day.

That's nothing, one of my favorite bands (I won't name them because if I do, they might learn of this comment) are doing a show in November of this year for which tickets went on sale this past November... 50 weeks in advance!

"Oh no, I was reading Brooklyn Vegan, and this anonymous bloke who apparently is a big fan of ours spilled the beans about us putting tickets on sale for a show a whole year early! At least I think he is talking about us, he didn't name the band so our feelings wouldn't get hurt."
Seriously, dude, take your head out of your ass. "Your favorite band" isn't reading this, and if they did, they wouldn't give a shit.

Springsteen has nothing on Celine Dion. Her tickets were double the price of Springsteen's and went on sale over a year before the first tour date. They were selling tickets two months ago for a show that doesn’t take place until Jan of '09! Now that's ridiculous, I’d be a lot less worried about where I am this summer than where I'll be in '09. But I guess if people are willing to buy them that early then good for them. But really it just means scalpers will have to shell out lots of money way in advance, which serves them right for jacking up the prices for the rest of us.

I'm fairly sure that a venue like Giants Stadium, hosting the aforementioned July concerts, kind of needs the advanced notice.
