MGMT & Yeasayer - NYC sold out, DC wanted a bigger room
DOWNLOAD: Yeasayer - No Need To Worry (MP3)
Yeasayer @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - Dec 15, 2007 (Pavla Kopecna)

Yeasayer & MGMT played the smaller stage at Black Cat in DC last night (Jan 16, 2008), but demand was so high for the show that people were actually writing the venue to ask for the show to be moved to the bigger stage. The venue replied...
Thanks for writing and letting us know what’s happening over there at BYT in regards to the Yeasayer/MGMT show. We understand that this show, selling out the Backstage in advance as it did, would seem like a perfect opportunity for a last minute move to the Mainstage. In this case, we encouraged the bands to move this show upstairs. However, it was Yeasayer’s and MGMT’s decision to stay on the Backstage. In the end, we support their decision and believe it will be a great night. Both NYC shows are now also sold out - even the Bowery Ballroom one they just added. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings play a sold out show at the Black Cat tonight. Yeasayer and MGMT were both just on MTV news.
For those who did not get tickets, remember that advance tickets are available for Backstage shows through Ticketmaster and here at the Black Cat’s own box office. Thanks,
The Black Cat

as much as i like mgmt i always thought they were one of those bands that you can see at any time with out worrying about getting tickets
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2008 1:09 PM
Anon 1:09pm, do not worry. In a few months or a year at the latest you will be able to get tickets to see both of these bands at any time. This is just hipster hype nonsense that sold out these shows.

MGMT sounds like Better Than Ezra
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2008 1:16 PM
is johnny brenda's a nice place?
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2008 1:16 PM
Is it alright if I respond to see the band but have zero interest in getting drunk?
Assuming that email is even legit.

hipster hype? yeah, okay. except MGMT are actually really good.

"hipster hype? yeah, okay. except MGMT are actually really good."
actually MGMT just have a powerful label, but Yeasayer are actually really good.
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2008 1:23 PM
if Yeasayer are actually really good, why do i only really like "2080." and if it's all about MGMT's label, why do i like nearly every song on Oracular Spectacular.
nobody told me which band to like, this was a controlled experiment.

"That's because MGMT actually had a deal fall in its lap 11 months prior, the old-fashioned way: band makes EP, intern passes EP around the Columbia Records office, Columbia contacts band.
"We went into the meeting, and we were jackasses," Goldwasser recalls. "We had no interest in getting signed, but at some point we got really into being on Columbia."
Navigating the fickle world of backlash was something MGMT has also been conscious of as part of the decision to begin its career with Columbia.
"We wanted to try to make a good major label album," VanWyngarden says. "It's kind of an obstacle we're facing, but we like that. Everybody now is on an indie label, so we're being different by being on a major."
MGMT's debut, "Oracular Spectacular," is also a different animal for Columbia, which releases it physically Jan. 22. (A quiet digital release in October has shifted 1,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.)"

"'Everybody now is on an indie label, so we're being different by being on a major.'"
Sounds like a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Remember the SNL weekend update when Norm Macdonald says, "#1 on the pop charts this week is Better Than Ezra."
And #2 ... Ezra." |

Yeah, I totally figured I could just walk up and get tickets for Yeasayer last night at Black Cat. Wrong. The band did announce another DC show for April though but who knows if I'll even care by that point.

all fantastic opinions aside, i want to go see them in philly, and i would love your fantastic opinions about the venue there.

Black Cat is seriously the best venue I've ever been to. non-facist employees...awesome environment...reasonable sound. i also played there recently and the staff was the nicest of any venue i'd ever played.

I bet those emails to the Black Cat were written by the funny guys in Improv Everywhere!!! HAHA!!! :)

Good for the bands, giving the people who bought the tickets the show they had paid to see.
(Braces for announcement that the Bowery show has been moved to Webster Hall...)

Why the excitement about Yeasayer? They sound pretty bland to me. It's like some horrible 80s mish-mash of Johnny Clegg and Drum Theatre, just slightly less polished. Check it out:

Johnny Brenda's in Philly is a nice venue... finest in Philly. Stage area is like Mercury Lounge in size (slightly bigger), but with a bar and balcony. Great food and beers too. The area isn't sketchy either. I've been there tons of times and never felt like I was gonna get shot. Street parking is plentiful and it's right off an "el" stop (Girard and Frankford).

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2008 2:31 PM
The Mercury Lounge show indeed happened, and it was all you could ask for for a free, industry-type. Looking forward to a longer set (hopefully) at Bowery. Photos and a brief review here:
