Sell out

Some revolutionary.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2008 4:59 PM

gotta pay the bills...besides it's better to pose for Marc Jacobs than 'Eastpack Backpacks'.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2008 5:09 PM

when is chan marshall going to do her chanel thang?

Posted by LB | January 3, 2008 5:43 PM

She purses her lips like a real rebel, doesn't she?

Posted by jenkins, darius | January 3, 2008 6:11 PM

since when is she a revolutionary? same bitter diatribes for 08, indeed!

yay marcj and maya.

"I’m not sure how they managed to pick the most unflattering pictures of her as possible, but they’ve gone and done it."

Marc Jacobs ads are never flattering, and thats just Juergen Tellers style.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2008 6:29 PM

weak, not a good move at all.

Posted by new post | January 3, 2008 6:32 PM

weak...

Sell-out.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2008 6:36 PM

While I would never begrudge an artist to do whatever the Hell they want whenever the Hell they want as long as it's not, I dunno, electrocuting dogs or something, you just can't deliberately promote yourself as any sort of socially responsible "revolutionary" like she does and then participate in something so SUPER commercial as a Marc Jacobs ad. I mean, c'mon. I would've settled for a GAP "Red" campaign picture before this.

Posted by zik | January 3, 2008 7:14 PM

how is marc jacobs selling out? marc jacobs is legit, she might just be a fan.

but yeah the photos are gd-awful, she looks like a sri lankan ball of grease with hair.

although that jean set is kind of cute, just not on her specifically.

Posted by Mandy | January 3, 2008 7:45 PM

M.I.A. makes great albums. As a "personality" or performer, she's not such a tight package. Don't let it detract from the joy of listening to the music.

Posted by Kala | January 3, 2008 8:29 PM

"she looks like a sri lankan ball of grease with hair." huh.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2008 9:46 PM

she was in front of me at the union sq whole foods tonight, toting 3 huge barney's bags. girl is a teeny tiny revolutionary clotheshorse.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2008 11:23 PM

the real story is how overrated that crappy album of hers is

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2008 1:47 AM

"gotta pay the bills...besides it's better to pose for Marc Jacobs than 'Eastpack Backpacks'."

I think it would have been more reasonable for her to appear in an ad for Eastpack Backpacks rather than Mark Jacobs.

losers of the day: people who yell 'sell out'

Posted by favian | January 4, 2008 5:54 AM

she's a fucking cartoon character.

losers of the day: people who yell 'sell out'

---maybe they just want to hear that reel big fish song?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2008 9:40 AM

What? The whole "revolutionary" thing was just a shallow marketing gimmick? SHOCK! HORROR! The dancefloors are ripe for revolution! Won't some vapid pop star heed the rallying cry?!?

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2008 9:42 AM

I'll bet M.I.A.'s bush looks just like Cat Steven's face, 'saright though, I like it like that.

♫♪Slam Galang galang galang
Ga la ga la ga la Land ga Lang ga Lang
Shotgun get you down
Get down get down get down♪♫

sell out? are you an idiot. im not even going to try and debate that. do you even know what consumers marc jacobs targets?

Posted by Anonymous | January 5, 2008 6:15 PM

sellout? not. so what, she is posing for marc jacobs. she is still a bad ass. and unflattering? beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Posted by Anonymous | January 7, 2008 12:30 AM

"the real story is how overrated that crappy album of hers is"

NO, THE REAL STORY IS HOW NON-CULTURED YOU ARE. IM SURE YOU KNOW MORE THAN THE CREDIBLE MUSIC JOURNALISTS AT ROLLING STONE WHO CHOSE HER AS THE BEST ALBUM OF 2007. GO LISTEN TO YOUR PANIC AT THE DISCO.

Posted by MELI D | January 7, 2008 2:11 AM

I was surprised that the credible music journalists at Rolling Stone actually showed such good taste, giving Kala the #1 spot on the albums chart. I like Rolling Stone a little more now.

As for the Marc Jacobs business, why should we care one way or the other about that? (Though I admit, I know very little about that guy. What evil things has he done?) But yes, I agree, those are the most unflattering pictures of Maya I've ever seen.

And regarding the M.I.A. spotting in Whole Foods with the Barneys bags - ha, ha... Isn't she in the UK now? Didn't she say in Philly about a month ago that she was leaving the U.S. maybe for good because her visa had expired again?

The ads are kind of revolutionary in a way. She's not your average model, AND there's visible facial hair.

I hadn't really thought about how cool that was 'til I read an article about it today on Threadtrend, a site that I usually hate.

Here's the link:http://threadtrend.com/2008/01/09/mia-for-marc-jacobs-a-call-to-arms-the-facial-hair-revolution-begins/

I'm interested to hear people's reactions to it.

the best pictures are when she is on stage.

@ zik:

"SUPER commercial" conflicts with "Socially responsible?"

Get real, dude; it's a clothing ad.

Posted by Jim Cropcho | January 11, 2008 9:55 PM

if marc jacobs wants m.i.a. marc jacobs will have it. or whoever books these broads to pose for ads to get people to purchase overprice clothing. k-mart,walmart and target have great prices for levis.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2008 1:27 PM

i like it...
i mean thats the point of the picture...shes not famous..shes a not a celebrity...shes not gorgious...shes a underground superstar.....

it actually makes a point... you can be unflattering and un-known (in a scence) and still be marketable in the high end fashion!....shes still wearing over-large clothes there just not flashy!!

so for the haters...whay are u actually hating on...think outside the box

Posted by phillip | January 14, 2008 11:32 PM

M.I.A. is the best women even when her song hombre is as amazing as her

Posted by alba santos | February 12, 2008 8:14 PM

How is she selling out really? Fashion and music are inspirational. Slave labour... of course is not but Marc Jacobs isn't a slave labour brand? Whereas Nike and Gap are!? I would have much prefered to have seen her in ads promoting the dope garms she wears on stage though-selling that shit! I want some!
xx

No she's not blond and exploiting skin, the traditional Western image of the 80's & 90's that wouldn't cause the batting of an eye. She's selling reassurance and empowerment to a modern generation of people without integrated representation. M.I.A. defines herself as she chooses instead of letting others' narrow perceptions confine her. I look at those pictures and feel like I can breathe.

I dont find the marc jacobs ad to be an issue. I think in a way, the ad is showing showing not the typical mj model or celebrity and seeing how they can still be marketable. I find both artists to be edgy and innovative. I think it's a could collabration. Although, I find these particular photos unflattering. But it does kind fit M.I.A.'s style. Does it not?

I find most MJ fans to be huge fans of M.I.A.- They're both kind of out there and ahead of their time.

On the other hand, if is not aware of MJ. who can really know? does he exploit third countries himself? who makes his products? It seems to be a contradiction. Doesn't M.I.A. represent freedom of third world countries???

Posted by One Gurrrl Revolution!!! | February 24, 2008 12:39 AM

im ridiculously pissed at this. i saw her mj ad in that shit magazine vanity fair today. i vomited. wtf...all about human rights yet....ya...fuck those animal rights. and she's posing with this yellow bag which im sure is baby calf skin. viva revolucion M.I.A.! pathetic

Posted by ananta | April 13, 2008 6:25 PM

as far as I'm concerned all of the individuals who upped and became M.I.A. haters can stick it--she is so far ahead of the times in her artistry and style, and I commend Marc Jacobs for recognizing talent that complements his own creatvity and edge. M.I.A. is one of the first of the asian massive scene that has made it over to the mainstream "states" music-- let's just hope she is the first of many. She brings globe-inspired music to the next level. Karsh Kale, I hope you are next.

Posted by compassRosE117 | July 21, 2008 10:02 PM

she isn't a sell out one bit. marc jacobs is sick, she honestly couldn't have picked a better clothing line.

Posted by jane | October 12, 2008 3:10 PM

she just wasnt the right person for it. she's constantly wearing colorful african prints or whatever and here they threw on a suit on her, i mean she gets credit for trying to rock it but still it obviously doesnt fit and thats a bit telling of her reasons behind doing it.
