new R.E.M. album - "Accelerate"

Accelerate is the fourteenth studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., due for release on 1 April, 2008 in North America and a day earlier in Europe and the rest of the world. Work commenced in early 2007. The album title, officially confirmed by the band on December 31, was revealed to be "Accelerate" in an issue of Q Magazine. This was also alluded to on the graphics of the band's website, REMhq.com. The producer, Jacknife Lee, was announced on 9 March 2007 [Wikipedia] (via everywhere)Check out NinetyNights.com for a confusing pre-"Accelerate"-release promotional experience. R.E.M. are confirmed to play Langerado in March, and then are expected to tour some more to promote the album.

What REM needs to do is to stop making mediocre to bad records and do a farewell tour with Bill Berry on drums and go out on a high note....they had such a great rise to the top in the 80's / 90's as the little band that could & did and now they are the used to be big band that shouldn't...
Guess they are still trying to pay off their 80 million dollar contract to Warners Bros that they signed 10 years ago.. .ironically every record since then has sold less & less....

Say whatever you want about their descent into mediocrity (and a lot has been said about that), but they remain an outstanding live band.
Which is necessary, as every album post New Adventures has been mediocre at best, and most have been much worse.

The first thing I thought when I read that was "don't they already have a record called Accelerate??". It's guess cuz it's so boringly REM. Ah, whatever, they ruled so hard at one time that I can't hate them.

I pray that Goldenvoice does not book these guys for Coachella.

REM don't need fame in the USA. They are still very popular in Europe! Anyway I liked their last 4 albums and their live show is second to none! Long live REM!

I agree w/the comment above about what a boring title "Accelerate" is. Then again, Reckoning was a boring title, too. Would be so great if they made an album worthy of their IRS years. If it's another dud I think someone should start a petition for them to break up. As a longtime fan, it breaks my heart to see them be so lame lately - they're like Genesis.

no! if anything on 'accelerate' has half the greatness "in the sun" had [all five versions or whatever] then i think we're in for a decent album, and above all else, hardly boring.

A bad REM album is still miles better than anything these new bands can muster up!
