Johnny Depp was great. But Daniel Day-Lewis should win. Because he drank the milkshake.

No Laura Dern from Inland Empire?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 1:58 PM

Inland Empire was 2006.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 2:03 PM

Atonement sucks. Seriously, don't waste $11 on it. Gorgeous cinematography and British accents don't make WWII/romantic "epic" cliches any fresher.

Inland Empire is from 2006, so Dern wasn't eligible. Not that they would ever go for a performance like that anyway.

I just don't understand why/how so many people keep gobbling up by-the-numbers "indie" movies like Juno. Wasn't Napoleon Dynamite done a few years ago?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 2:18 PM

I really enjoyed Juno

Posted by Daniil | January 22, 2008 2:37 PM

I thought Sweeney Todd was pretty phenomenal as well, and am really disappointed by the number of people who missed the humor (how) or thought there was too much gore.

Posted by a | January 22, 2008 2:42 PM

Juno sucked

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 2:44 PM

Michael Clayton is a really intense character study of a person you never think of - the guy who fixes problems for a law firm. It's also a thriller/whodunnit. Clooney, Wilkinson and Swinton are amazing. Sincerely one of the best movies of the year. Loved the ending as well.

I've seen all the best picture noms except michael clayton...they were all really good..honestly i liked atonement the best but I think no country or there will be blood are just as deserving of an academy award...the whole thing is bullshit though...academy members don't even watch all the movies that are being voted on and the nominations are all political (each studio gets one ect.).

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 2:52 PM

"Knocked Up" was a way better film than "Juno." Period.

Posted by Jeans Fitter, Happier | January 22, 2008 2:52 PM

Juno...best picture? It was a little better than I expected, but a best picture nod?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 2:55 PM

i agree with jeans fitter, happier. and knocked up sucked.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 2:57 PM

the golden globes are poltical this is slightly more fair than just 80 people picking movies they like wit the majority not even seeing films. o yeah, falling slowly better win...once was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 3:04 PM

Juno was way overrated and didnt deserve the best picture nomination. Nice to see Viggo getting a nomination for Best Actor but Day-Lewis should win that one. Ruby Dee for the best supporting actress Oscar!

Posted by hipster poseur | January 22, 2008 3:07 PM

Juno shouldn't get best picture. It was ok, but way overrated and too glossy. People loved it, but the only thing that should have been oscar-nomed in that was Michael Cera.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 3:12 PM

Atonement was a new kind of terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 3:13 PM

i hate movies and i hate awards

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 3:22 PM

I'm glad Tommy Lee Jones got a nod for Best Actor in 'In the Valley of Elah'. I thought that film was going to be up for more awards. Jones had a bit of comeback with 'Elah' and 'No Country'.

I'm surprised that 'Before The Devil Knows You're Dead' didn't get any nominations. I thought Sidney Lumet might get a nomination for Best Director.

Apparently I am the only one who thought Sweeney Todd was horrible. And it's not because of the violence. It's because it's a bad film.

Posted by HUAGLA | January 22, 2008 3:31 PM

sweeny todd was great and superbly cast and acted. no country and there will be blood are two of the best movies I have ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 3:41 PM

There will be blood should win in every category that it is nominated. No other film this year came close to that one.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 3:53 PM

norbit should not be nominated for anything at all...let along make up!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 4:08 PM

there will be blood = one of the best films i've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 4:48 PM

to call atonement a love story really misses the point of the movie and the book.

and sweeney todd was awful. depp cant sing, and the 'songs' were instantly forgetabble. people need to stop putting sondheim on a pedestal, and realize that his lyrics arent deep.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 4:54 PM

Juno might be the worst film of all time

Posted by Bernie | January 22, 2008 4:56 PM

there will be blood oughta sweep - honestly that movie and "no country for old men" are the only two movies that will be remembered in ten years.

if juno wins a single award, i don't even know what i do. it wasn't even impressive, it was an okay movie - knocked up was MUCH better and more deserving of recognition.

and the whole "jonny greenwood's score is ineligible" thing really sucks because he would have crushed the competition.

oh, and most members of the academy watch every single movie, they are sent dvd copies of every movie, and - being film enthusiasts - they are not SO lazy that they would have a good movie in front of them that it is their duty to see, and not see it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 4:56 PM

why was
"
the whole "jonny greenwood's score is ineligible" thing "

his score ineligible thought it was brilliant.
as was Ther will be blood and no country"

Sweeney Todd and Depp were okay but not better than those two movies

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 5:09 PM

how is it that the diving bell and the butterfly was not nominated for best film or best foreign film?!

Posted by shocked | January 22, 2008 5:15 PM

the answer is this: the diving bell and the butterfly is not good. and it didn't get nominated for best foreign film because it was not a foreign film. it was written by an englishman and directed by an american. even if it were an eligible film, it should not have been nominated. five that were better this year, off the top of my head (none nominated, thanks to the atrocious foreign film nomination process): colossal youth, secret sunshine, 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days, opera jawa, persepolis.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 10:22 PM

What about E.T.?

Posted by Elliot | January 23, 2008 10:50 PM

I did not like the score to TWBB. It was annoying at points.

Posted by Anonymous | January 24, 2008 12:16 AM

You people are the most indie freaking group I have ever seen. How did none of you like Juno? Isn't it indie now to have kids and dress them up in t shirts that say "buy local" or "punk's not dead"! Juno was excellent, it was funny as hell and Ellen Page gave a better performance that actually made a lot more people feel better than any of the other nominations (Ruby Dee was great). Laura Linney gets nominated every year for playing a woman who tries not to cry all the time. There Will Be Blood was the best movie made since "The Shining" and "Magnolia". Oh, and about the humor in "Sweeny Todd", what humor? Is it indie now to eat other people? IF so, then yes, I did miss the humor, but the movie sucked. The end sucked, big friggin deal that little kid kills Johnny Depp. They all needed to chill the fuck out and smoke some weed and stop complaining about this and that. Why didn't Sweeny just write a letter to an indie faction at the local university and garner support to let him back into the country and be with his wife?? Where was channel 9 news?? oh, no. F Sweeny Todd. Crossover and You Got Served were better than Sweeny Todd.

Just saw Sweeney Todd for the second time. Don't usually like horror movies but with Johnny and Helena's superb acting and singing, outstanding music & lyrics, and yes, humour ... some people just don't get it (the movie is not for everyone ... some people should stay home and watch reality tv shows). Thank God we still have some working professionals!

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2008 6:46 PM

Seriously? Sweeney needed more appraisal from all these awards shows. Johnny deserves the actor over all the others. And..where the heck is helena bonham carter for best actress? She was phenomenal!!
