Wordless Music Series

Wordless show last night was EXCELLENT. If you don't have tix, I strongly recommend figuring out some way to get in for the show tonight. [The Battering Room]

It was truly awesome. The lights, the sound effects, everything.... Recommended for sure.

It was a really great show. Amazing church and the lighting was perfect. I went as a radiohead fan but found myself liking the two other pieces even more than jonny's (still very cool though to listen to his stuff in the context of knowing his obsession w/ sound and music). The Titanic piece was fascinating...Bryars interpretation of what the last half hour on the sinking ship sounded like (minus screaming I'm sure).

Definitely recommend tonight's show!

As Jonny sadly wasn't there, Brad Lubman, the conductor, was really the star of the show. He led the orchestra through Jonny's piece with brilliance. And bravo to the Wordless Music Series for picking such appropriate works by John Adams and Gavin Bryars to kick off the night. Excellent acoustics and amazing visuals in the church. Highly recommended... I'm even thinking about going back tonight.

Ugh...I already sold my tickets for tonight's show (at a reduced price) b/c I thought I would have a time conflict.

Did this start in time at 8pm sharp? Also how big is this place?

musically it was fantastic. the venue is absolutely beautiful. the show was totally worth every penny. i strongly suggest checking it out if you're into hearing new things. there were 2 pieces of music before jonny's which were both worth hearing on their own. one was the sinking of the titantic.

the show sucked ...orch oriented to mics not audience...audience afterthought...acoustics sub par...Gavin Titanic piece was painful...what the hell do crickets have to do with the fing Titanitic? False/misued sampling

Posted by bo's | January 17, 2008 1:08 PM

that chirping on the tape was sonar, not crickets. nice try at looking like a smarted out asshole, though.

The orchestra was oriented to the conductor (which is typical) and the mics were oriented to the orchestra, not vice-versa. Though, the Bryars was not conducted which may have made the setup look a little strange at first. Still, if all the players were facing forward, you mostly just see their music stands.

The chirping was in fact crickets - it says so in the score - so anon 1:08 actually is a smarted out asshole. The meaning of it beats me too, but I'm sure there's a good reason. Bryars interviewed survivors and spent a lot of time researching the piece.

I wish Jonny could have made it as well, but I was glad everyone could focus on the 50 musicians who worked so hard to make this a great show. I was proud to be a part of it. Sorry for the essay.
