Radiohead @ Liberty State Park & Twin Towers, August 2001 (CRED)
Radiohead in Liberty State Park

In the latest shift in the competition for music fans this summer, the concert promoters behind the popular Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California will stage a three-day event in Liberty State Park, according to people briefed on the plans. The new festival, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 8 through Aug. 10, is to be presented by the promoter AEG and its Goldenvoice subsidiary. A competing event, the Vineland Music Festival, held by C3 Presents and Festival Republic, a unit of the concert giant Live Nation, is scheduled from Aug. 8 to Aug. 10 in Vineland, N.J. The band Radiohead and the singer-songwriter Jack Johnson have been mentioned as headliners at the Liberty State Park event, though a lineup has not been announced. Representatives for AEG declined to comment. [NY Times]
The same weekend???

Radiohead (also) played Liberty State Park in 2001.

Radiohead in Liberty State Park

i think jack johnson might be as bad as radiohead is good

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 1:47 AM

i am so excited at the thought of getting to see radiohead at LSP again. i hope they'll have ferry service to/from again too!

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 2:14 AM

Great underused venue. Keyspan Park and Downing Stadium should get more shows as well!

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 2:20 AM

i was kinda hoping for an arena show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 2:49 AM

Jack Johnson might ease the decision making process for the people that want to do one day of "Coachella East" and one day of Vineland.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 3:04 AM

JERSEEEEEYYYY CITTTTTTYYYYYYY

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 3:06 AM

why would they do it the same weekend in only hours away from each other??? this doesn't make any sense! I also read that the vineland fest will be more "rock" oriented...whatever that means..

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 4:23 AM

OH MAN! FUCKIN' SHIT'S ON. LET'S SEE VINELAND THROW DOWN THE GAUNTLET.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 4:36 AM

Paying careful attention to last year's Virgin Fest in Baltimore and Lollapalooza in Chicago over the same days revealed that the exact same bands played both festivals (though no one tried a repeat of Phil Collins at Live Aid). The same could be expected of these two upcoming festivals.

Speaking of Radiohead, they are doing a...get this...INSTORE PERFORMANCE in London tonight. Fucking mental. It's going to be a webcast too. Wow.

Posted by Chris | January 16, 2008 6:26 AM

I really thought you were just another smartass brooklyn vegan commenter, chris. I really did. Fucking wow.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 7:56 AM

I don't get it. Jonny's got his show in NY tonight. How is there a Radiohead gig in London as well?

Posted by KP | January 16, 2008 9:12 AM

radiohead have a teleporter

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 9:19 AM

why the fuck would they have conflicting dates
its just silly...
silly.

Posted by yo | January 16, 2008 9:30 AM

yes, obviously. what else would the "popcorn superhet receiver" do? I mean, it does also make cool noises, but I thought that was understood as well.

jonny will not be at the performance tonight in nyc. his composition will. (also appearing at a theatre near you).

the jersey city plan is the best option for this terrible idea. as long as there is a) a fairy that will fly you to and from lower manhattan and b) the beta band opening up for them just like in 2001. What a great evening that was. I have some creepy pictures from that day as well. remember the statue in the back with the soldiers bodies melting into each other surrounded by american flags?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 9:35 AM

yawn

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 9:39 AM

I thought it was assumed that Jonny Greenwood was not performing at the Wordless Music Series. Isn't it some orchestra interpreting his music? Thats what I heard and why I didn't buy tickets.

You think Thom will start a save the Hudson campaign? Cmon either j johnson or Thom-o-head headlining no comparison...head-o-thom are on another level.

even in 2001 radiohead tix were $55...imagine what they will be on this summer tour...plus the usual tix master service charges.

why would radiohead play liberty state park as part of a festival, when they could easily just play it on their own?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 9:53 AM

oh cool. so on the off chance i make some money soon i can go to coachella in the spring while i'm at school and this thing while i'm home. liberty state park is pretty. it'd be cool if it was there.

Posted by Mandy | January 16, 2008 9:59 AM

best. encore. ever.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 10:05 AM

Radiohead are also playing NYC

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 10:10 AM

this blows. i was really looking forward to going to both. but now its gonna come down to most for your money. with radio head its most likely gonna be coachella east or whatever they are calling it.

Posted by diggins | January 16, 2008 10:22 AM

It's so weird seeing the towers there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 10:27 AM

i have a feeling that vineland may go the jam band route, so it may not be much of a decision after all.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 10:28 AM

vineland is run by the acl/glastonbury/leeds/reading people..there wont be too many jam bands

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 10:49 AM

last i heard the space tehy can get only holds 20,000 people...so maybe vineland will be dialed down....

liberty state has to hold 60k+

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 10:56 AM

Jack Johnson is great background BBQ music. I saw him in concert, once, and it easily tied for first place (with a Beth Orton show I went to) as "most boring concert ever".
How he can play to a festival sized crowd is beyond me.

Posted by Kurt C. | January 16, 2008 11:05 AM

So, wait. Let me get this straight. Which festival is going to have Phil Collins?

Posted by Justin | January 16, 2008 11:15 AM

What time is someone gonna get annoyed because someone's gonna ask what time Daft Punk is playing this festival?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 11:21 AM

What was the capacity for Radiohead show at Liberty State Park in 2001? Were those two shows soldout?

Posted by 2001 | January 16, 2008 11:27 AM

if i remember correctly, the liberty state park shows sold out pretty much immediately.

the capacity was probably close to 15,000.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 11:38 AM

These two festivals would be 120 miles away from one another. And on the same weekend? How does that at all make sense?

Posted by Alex | January 16, 2008 12:11 PM

jack johnson has played bonnaroo several times. why does it seem weird that he would play a summer festival?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 12:12 PM

no way i seriously read "joe jackson" the first time. not even joking. i'm not being ironic or cute, i seriously thought it said joe jackson, then i saw another headline about this and i was like 'haha,t hey mean joe jackson' then i went back here and was like 'awww, hell no...' TIGHT BALLS

Posted by joey | January 16, 2008 12:29 PM

If Jack Johnson is the headliner, I'll become a cutter.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 1:09 PM

because he sounds like a turd

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 1:13 PM

If Radiohead plays "Coachella East" and not the ACTUAL Coachella I'm going to riot.

Posted by zik | January 16, 2008 1:38 PM

As the Kaiser Chief say "I predict a riot"

Posted by Craig | January 16, 2008 2:14 PM

thom yorke had a miserable time at coachella in 04, theyre not playin coachella anytime soon

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 3:04 PM

Radiohead suck.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 3:33 PM

So, how big is this place? Think it will have a few stages?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 4:22 PM

Benn there done that. They did a show there years ago and althought they were good, the sound is weak and will hold out for an arena.

Posted by reindeer | January 16, 2008 4:27 PM

Is Live Nation still doing shows in New York?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 9:30 PM

"Is Live Nation still doing shows in New York? "

Yes.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2008 9:40 PM

Live who?

Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2008 2:46 PM

Word of warning: was at one of the 2001 shows. I do not believe they served alcohol at the Park, and they were also confiscating umbrellas, which, for some reason, was where I was hiding my ganja. But that also would have sucked if it had rained.

So.. prepare to be sober and, perhaps, soggy.

2001 was a great show, however.

Can't say they've put out any good material since then...

Posted by Dave | January 17, 2008 9:31 PM

What time does Radiohead go on?

Posted by Radiodread | January 17, 2008 9:53 PM

I've seen Radiohead 10x and LSP in '01 was probably the best out of them all. The festival will be a blast there and it's about time we have one in our area. Between NYC/NJ/Philly, Radiohead will prob play like 5 or so shows. 2 @ MSG, 1 at LSP, and 2 @ the Tweeter Center in Camden. And possibly 1 @ Vineland or 1 @ PNC in NJ.

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2008 12:11 PM

Why the all the festivals on the same weekend?

Greed.

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2008 2:36 PM

for so many reasons, the show in 2001 was completely unforgettable

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 1:15 PM

i hope jack johnson plays.. he never plays in new jersey/new york

Posted by Anonymous | February 8, 2008 5:36 PM
