"No NYC dates? Bogus"

Man up and take the the train to Long Island if you wanna go so bad, you ungrateful terd!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:29 PM

No NYC dates? Hahaha!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:29 PM

They probably will add a PNC date, but not a NYC one. Maybe Meadowlands, but there is no venue in NYC for a bill like that.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:32 PM

That's no small moon!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:33 PM

Best news ever. I couldn't get across the border to see Modest Mouse in Detroit last month, so I will pay however much is necessary to see them in Toronto.

Posted by Mark B. | January 28, 2008 2:34 PM

thats a pretty small venue considering the size of all 3 bands no?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:35 PM

FYI: No beer and no smoking @ Jones Beach. Enjoy.

Fuck Long Island. How about MSG? Randall's Island?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:43 PM

is it even possible to take the train to Jones Beach? Anyone ever take one and how was it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:44 PM

I'd bet these three bands will be playing Sasquatch.

Posted by toby | January 28, 2008 2:49 PM

LIRR to Jones Beach is royal pain. You have to go to Freeport and then take a bus to the beach.
Coming back, if you don't make the 11-something train, you wait until 1:30am.

Posted by nyctaper | January 28, 2008 2:50 PM

Jones Beach shows are fun. Plus it's a saturday...rent a car, go the beach during the day, and then head over to the show at night. It'll be a good time.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:53 PM

Mann Center will be an amazing venue for this. What should we expect ticket prices to be?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 2:54 PM

I'd honestly rather go down to Philly than see them at Jones Beach.

I hope that NYC date ends up being real.

Posted by rocked the shit | January 28, 2008 2:55 PM

They doing Sasquatch and Bonnaroo ?

seems like they are lining themselves up for those....

as exciting as this all seems on paper ..they are still just a shell of a band the once were and if the new record is anything like their last 4 (how can it not be ?) then I can't see why one would pay the (likely) exorbitant price to see this band in this day and age

Posted by RT | January 28, 2008 2:57 PM

If you look at today's billboard article-June 19: New York (TBA).That is probably MSG.Were REM played in 2003 and 2004.

Since REM had no problem filling two shows at MSG in 2003 and almost filling one show at MSG just a year later,I would be suprised that they did not play this time (with much more famous openers).

I don't know why you dopes think that REM will not play NYC.They probably have the biggest US fanbase here. This is Michael Stipe's (adopted)hometown.Anyone hear his "Leaving New York"?That song is friggin beautiful.

Posted by Boy in the Well | January 28, 2008 2:59 PM

i can-modest mouse and the national are opening

Assuming there's no NYC date:

I can vouch that the Mann Center in Philly is a great venue. Beautiful sound, very picturesque & from what I remember, not TOO large for those amphitheater-type venues (it's been 10-11 years since I've been!).

But then again, I'm also a fan of renting or borrowing a car to head over to Jones Beach, since it is a Saturday night (the only night of the week I'd consider attending shows there). It's MUCH, MUCH better than taking the LIRR.

I'm not an REM fan, but this is a decent line-up.

Posted by Matt | January 28, 2008 3:06 PM

Crap will be out of town when they are in town! :(

Posted by Craig | January 28, 2008 3:11 PM

REM, My Morning Jacket and the Cure so far for that week. How about Portishead and MBV as well...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:11 PM

It's great that the National are playing on a tour that will give them even more exposure to a national audience. However, I'm not comforted that they will be playing before a packed crowd of guidos at Jones Beach...

Posted by DoesNotLikeLI | January 28, 2008 3:15 PM

Hey, BV, ever consider naming your sources? I'm guessing you got this from the REM HQ e-mail newsletter (which was sent out about twenty minutes before you posted this), but would be nice if you told people where you got stuff from.....

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:22 PM

Conflict with my National tickets. Have 3 for Sat 2/24 show, willing to trade for 2 tickets to the Fri 2/23 show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:24 PM

jones beach sucks. r.e.m. hasn't been good since 1989. and i just don't get modest mouse or the national. oh well.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:26 PM

why wouldn't MSG be a good venue for this show?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:31 PM

I honestly think this lineup is so big that they should play Central Park. It will be in the summer, it's a perfect opportunity. MSG is crap for this lineup.

Posted by LonGislandisTerrible | January 28, 2008 3:33 PM

Prospect Park -- not the bandshell just the park --

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:35 PM

modest mouse is my beatles.

Posted by LonGislandisTerrible | January 28, 2008 3:38 PM

yes, Prospect Park is the place for this band to play.

Posted by Prospect | January 28, 2008 3:40 PM

Central Park's main venue Summerstage is a 1/4 of the size of MSG.... I don't think they do paid concerts on the big lawn like they use to...(were they ever paid or free ?)
Keyspan Park would have been good though...

Posted by RT | January 28, 2008 3:41 PM

Prospect Park? How about Coney Island with the old ladies and their summer chairs.Come on.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:43 PM

I get really fucking agitated when new concerts are announced and my only outlet is the comment section on brooklyn vegan

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 3:53 PM

What time does Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 4:48 PM

REM are good at playing MSG.I saw them in 2003 and 2004,and they were great shows.25 years of alt-rock hits, new songs that always rock live and Michael Stipe's warm charm with the crowd.

I have also never seen Modest Mouse and the National. So this is a show that I wanna see (if my mommy lets).

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 4:49 PM

We should have a grammar lesson on BV. Wanna= want to.

Anon 5:06: Whacha gonna do bout it?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:09 PM

"Wanna-want to"?

No shit. What a stupid post void of any significance. We should have a post lesson on BV for Anonymous 4:57.Correcting short-hand words like that is such borish behavior that=Zzzzzzzz.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:11 PM

The Daft Punk jokes will live forever.

huh you can drink beer and smoke at Jones Beach
I would prefer Jones Beach over MSG anyday.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:21 PM

Anon 5:21, I'm sure you would also prefer a cock up your ass to the love of a beautiful lady. That still doesn't make it right!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:26 PM

I like the REM. Mike Steipe's like a god to me.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:31 PM

Wow, you guys must all be as bored at work as I am...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:36 PM

Anon 5:26,how about the love of a beautiful lady who happens to have a cock?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:41 PM

Anon 5:41, this isn't Bangkok!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 5:46 PM

Who listenes to rem anyway?

Posted by maroon5fan1989 | January 28, 2008 5:48 PM

REM were great when they last played MSG. The performed many of the songs the crowd wants to hear. Stipe even performed an abbreviated, accoustic version of Interpol's NYC.

The National and Modest Mouse are excellent openers for this show. It sounds like a great night for music no matter what venue is chosen.

Sorry for the enthusiasm. I know these threads are mostly reserved for snarky, homophobic comments and WAY over-played daft punk jokes.

REM are Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 6:33 PM

are those two national shows at bam like, definitively sold out? i've never been to bam, i don't know how those shows work. will they eventually release more tickets?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 6:53 PM

Many times NYC really means Jones Beach or PNC.

Randalls Island is a great underused venues. So many great Lollapaloozas there!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2008 7:01 PM

R.E.M. = Really Elderly Musicians

Posted by greg | January 28, 2008 7:02 PM

anon: 6:31, 6:33: REM is only popular because they were on the Man on the Moon soundtrack. Modest Mouse should headline this show.

Posted by maroon5fan1989 | January 28, 2008 7:16 PM

MOVE THE FUCK AWAY FROM NYC OR RENT A CAR.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 12:03 AM

I like the Micheal Steipe's suits.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 8:51 AM

sweet collabo...i think it's the perfect recipe for a great night of music. Jones Beach wouldnt be bad at all, though a smaller venue is always nicer, it's sort of impossible with one legendary band and 2 pretty big ones on their way. JB is beautiful in the summer with the water behind the stage. Can't wait.

Posted by PM | January 29, 2008 9:39 AM

also, LIRR from penn isn't bad and then there is an express shuttle bus from the train station to the venue and it's actually a lot of fun because everyone on it is going to the concert.

Posted by PM | January 29, 2008 9:46 AM

Any insights on the REM touring band? Will the Young Fresh Fellows guy (McCaughnay? or something) be around again? Add who's on drums this year?

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 10:13 AM

Scott McCaughey is touring this time but no Ken Stringfellow (from the Posies).

Bill Rieflin is on drums (he's been with them for a while now). He also plays with Buck and McCaughey as Robyn Hitchcock's band. Great drummer (he was in Ministry at one point).

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 10:30 AM

i heard they're playing the statue of liberty torch..with follow up performances at the M&M store in times square!

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 10:38 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 10:55 AM

LIRR to Shuttle bus sounds good to me.

Also to that other angry yelling dude- renting a car is not always an option, what if you don't know how to drive or are under age? Relax already. We're just asking a simple question.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 12:12 PM

don't make the same mistake i made....jones beach is a dry venue that does not sell alcohol.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 12:17 PM

the national eat shit. rem and mouse are still cool, though.

Posted by burp! | January 29, 2008 3:24 PM

and buying booze at arena rock prices is far worse than not drinking.

or if you aren't stupid, you get wasted before you go to the show, ideally while driving there in your rental car.

$8.00 beers are for fools and fools alone.

Posted by burp! | January 29, 2008 3:36 PM

Any news on R.E.M. playing the Garden?I hope that they open with "It's The End Of The World As We Know It & I Feel Fine" just like they did MSG in November 2004 (the day after Bush won re-election).

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2008 8:55 PM

The new album clocks in at 34 minutes. Fast and rocking. Huge change from the last three albums.

Stipe covered Interpol solo at Jones Beach a few years ago, not at the MSG Show. Both was awesome.

Posted by dave s | February 13, 2008 10:44 AM

you is dumb.

they did the interpol at msg too.

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 10:50 AM

rem weren't just on the man on the moon soundtrack, they actually scored the film for milschzohchos foreman, or whatever the fuck his name is.

Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2008 12:48 AM

I second "Play Detroit" although I'm sure I'll drive to Chicago and crash with friends to see the National.
