These guys rock!!!

i really do not like them at all, but after seeing their show last night and how the audience reacted, they're going to be huge
Posted by jason | January 30, 2008 8:37 AM
I saw this show last night and I really don't understand the haters, the "conceited little tearer-downers." Are they the best band in the world? Will they save music? Of course not. They are a bunch of kids, fresh outta school, who made some really catchy, fun music that happened to get really popular really quickly -- and people who dislike them for that should chill, remind themselves that it's just music and, if you don't like it, all you have to do is not listen.
That said, the show was great fun. I had a smile across my face the whole time, and the crowd really seemed into it, especially the superfans toward the front middle of the floor. I thought the band was very tight, personable (if a little obviously freaked-out, save for the lead guy Ezra), and, in a telling touch, the "new song" they did was, again, really catchy and fun, with a bizarre, high-pitched, "aoh, aoh, aoohh!" chorus.

The opener Beat the Devil was way better than Vampire Weekend last night.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 8:47 AM
That's not a new song... it's M79. It's on the album.
Posted by Jeans Fitter, Happier | January 30, 2008 9:41 AM
I may have the description of the chorus wrong, but they definitely played a new song, as they announced it that way -- said they'd never played it live before -- and it was really great and weird.
Posted by Hunter | January 30, 2008 9:49 AM
in the crowd shot, no one looks to be over 20.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 9:54 AM
you aren't looking carefully enough then, I'm more than twice that #
Posted by hipster replacement | January 30, 2008 9:58 AM
i'm 29 and i was there.
and even if no one was over 20, is that such a problem?
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 10:00 AM
i saw the set list the new song that they played for the first time ever I believe was White Sky..something like that.
The other songs not on the album besides Boston were Arrows and Giant.
Amazing show. You can see me in the pics as the tall guy all the way up front in the middle in the last pic.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 10:07 AM
i can vouch for hipster replacement (sorry, i overheard your conversation with the guy with a camera next to you. i was the guy with the camera behind you). crowd was definitely very young though. i was also really psyched on the frat dude, who was completely wasted and bragged about "doing adderall" who literally tried to pull the earplugs out of my ear and kept mocking me. whatever.
Posted by jason | January 30, 2008 10:09 AM
ok is anyone in that band even older than 20?
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 10:19 AM
Someone was asking recently about the new album vs the Blue CD-R. The only song missing from the album that was on the Blue CD-R is Boston, which they played last night.
Posted by hipster replacement | January 30, 2008 10:23 AM
Thought the show was amazing last night. Agreed with Hunter...I had an ear-to-ear smile from start to finish.
These guys are insanely tight up there. I think a lot of people who see them play live (after having heard the album) have a newfound respect for them...the rhythms they hold down together as a band are very impressive. The result is a poppy sound, which appeals to the casual music fan but also gains the respect of musicians.
Posted by Drugs Delaney | January 30, 2008 10:24 AM
It's true, there were some annoying frat guys there. But, I've found that that is kind of par for the course for a big show at Bowery ... a band gets a lot of hype and you're gonna get some of these corporate frat-boy types that have no idea why they are at the show ... it comes with the (Manhattan) territory, unfortunately.

During one of Vampire Weekend's shows I anticipate the great Hipster Frat Boy War of the 2008 to begin.
It will end with sneakers (not the the ones you can actually play sports in) and pastel colored garb all over the battlefield.

that room looks pretty not packed for a sellout.....

VW were a big frat band at Columbia, that's one of the main reasons you saw so many frat boys at this particular show

in the world of internet hipsters everything is bad unless it is good

it didnt even really fill up until they hit the stage. i didn't think it was even going to get that crowded.

Hunter:
are you suggesting that a "frat boy" can't enjoy Vampire Weekend? Is there something in the DNA of a Vampire Weekend song that naturally repulses a "frat boy".
Your comment is borderline retarded. Sorry, that the concept of a "frat boy" actually liking the same music as you rocks your world.
Frat Boys Unite!!!

Beat the devil opened for them.... I love them. Make them big kids...
About Vampire Weekend I guess I need to see them live to get the hype. I think they are solid sounding but they do not thrill me. It is not always about hating more about preference....

99% of your comments are stupid. good band, good show, who cares who shows up?? learn to enjoy yourselves... scenesters.

These foul beasts continue to bring terror and fear to our people, as these "frat boy" children of the night now arise to plague the countryside!
Such wicked magic will not go unpunished.
The Vampire Killer presses on!

Frats may be ok in another place, but if you're going to school in NYC and need to join a frat to be be a part of a comunity, you're a total loser.
And as to VW, I guess I gotta see them live cause I just can't get into the EP I BOUGHT no matter how many times I hear it (just did again after reading all the comments... still no).
Glad you had a great time though.

a nightmare

Those songs are pure Kool Aid.... great going down but purely empty calories. Who will even care about these guys in 2 years? Clap Your Hands Say Tapes anyone?

"Your comment is borderline retarded. Sorry, that the concept of a "frat boy" actually liking the same music as you rocks your world."
i know this wasn't addressed to me and i agree that it shouldn't matter who likes their music, but when some guy clearly fitting that description decides to mess with me and try to piss me off after telling him not to, that's when it starts to annoy me. it's an issue of respect more than anything else. we're all there to see a show and enjoy it and stupid shit like that doesn't help anyone.

I have to wonder why people who were not at the show last night are commenting about said show. As a casual fan of VW, I didn't really know what to expect from their live performance. I was pleasantly surprised last night that they put on a decent show. They definitely rock it out a little more live than on the EP and MP3s floating around the internet. The crowd (heavy on the Columbia kids, obviously. what did you expect?!) was WAY into it, everyone had a great time and some people were (gasp!) actually dancing. I don't know about you, but that's why I go to shows.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 11:13 AM
It was a 16+ show...
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 11:21 AM
were they playing a prom or some shit?
Posted by jojo | January 30, 2008 11:38 AM
Does anyone know what the cameras were filming for? Is there any report of a DVD or will it be on their site or anything? They filmed the whole concert so I'm curious to find out!!
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 11:46 AM
i just hope these guys don't become as snotty as they look from all the success

i heard it was for MTV but i could be wrong.
Posted by jason | January 30, 2008 11:59 AM
i love it; frat boys were hip to VW before the hipsters!
Posted by jason | January 30, 2008 12:01 PM
One of the camera guys nearly knocked my head off when he was standing in the audience. VW were pretty adorable and I think just riding on the fact that they blend some unique sounds that appeal to tons of people at the moment. We’ll see where this takes them.
Beat the Devil were insanely, unexpectedly talented. Hooray for playing a giant metal shovel!

What time does Daft Punk comments replace Vampire Weekend comments?
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 12:11 PM
What time do people stop making stupid Daft Punk jokes that haven't been funny since last Fall?
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 12:16 PM
OMG HE'S WEARING LACOSTE!!!!!!!
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 12:16 PM
That MTV guy John Norris was filming something out front so I assume that the video was for a piece theyre doing.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 12:28 PM
Has John Norris updated his hair piece in a while? Just wondering. HIlarious that guy is like 50 years old and changes his hair pieces to appeal to the youngins he reports for.

great show, never heard Beat the Devil before, but picked up the cd after. very happy with what i saw and heard.

VW were the featured band on E!'s "The Daily 10" last night...
What's less hip, the fact that they were featured on E! or the fact that I was watching E! and saw them?
BTW...I hear Debbie Matenopolous is a huge fan!
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2008 12:47 PM
It was a good show -- god knows they are tuneful and it's pretty pulled-together -- but they have room to improve and my bet is they will ... Beat the Devil were new to me too and they rock
Posted by saltnpepper | January 30, 2008 12:53 PM
the new song is White Skies and can be found on youtube

for all of you that say frat kids don't belong, i will have you know that the first time i saw vampire weekend was at a frat. (the rich kids one, of course) and they've been using the pictures from that night ever since. album cover, anyone? it's the chandelier from the main room!

make that money! ride the hipsters' or the frats' backs. they're basically the same anyway- the tree just barely veered one direction or another in middle school. all pretentious assholes.

People, frat boys need love, too! Unfortunately, they seek out poontang.

The name of the new song was White Arrows. Walcott made the crowd go crazy!
Posted by Mira | January 31, 2008 8:25 AM
Oh yeah there was another new song on there. I had a look at the setlist when Ezra was on stage. We were directly infront of Ezra. We also met the band two hours before the concert started. They were all very nice except for Rostam, but I think that could be excused considering he seemed quite busy at the time.
Posted by Mira | January 31, 2008 8:29 AM
They sound like Islands
Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2008 9:09 AM
No, they sound like Flying Saucer Attack!
Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2008 12:10 PM
Is there an online store that indie bands shop at? Ya know, so they can get all wear the indie-hipster line of clothing?
Man, have some originality. These bands are akin to frat boys.
Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn

wtf? they sound nothing like fsa
Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 8:20 AM
they sound like a pound of snicker's being shoved inside my mouth. once everyone gets over this sugar high, people will figure out they are the new They Might Be Giants...critics darlings upon first listen. then people wise up and realize they are meant for nickelodeon and the disney channel.
Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 1:12 AM
they sound like taking back sunday.
Posted by beau | February 9, 2008 6:20 PM
does anyone know if the vinyl version of the Vampire Weekend album was mastered for vinyl? or did they use the CD master?
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 1:13 PM
actually I believe St. A's is actually a literary society, not a 'frat'. now that was a show
Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2008 4:46 AM
