Black Keys - Attack & Release, Stranger Times, Rod Stewart

Attack & Release

Rod Stewart, take heed: when you told Rolling Stone during a recent Grammy party that you wanted to record a blues album backed by the Black Keys, the Black Keys were listening.

Drummer Patrick Carney tells Billboard.com he read the news online the day it was posted, and was flattered by Stewart's rhetorical question: "Do you think that they know who I am?"

But if Stewart wants to work with the Black Keys, he may have to join them on their home turf in northeast Ohio. Guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach says they'd be happy to record with the Rodfather, "As soon as he comes to Akron. Maybe somebody will make the first move."

The Keys are no strangers playing with rockers more than double their age. They covered the Kinks' "Act Nice and Gentle" with the help of that group's frontman, Ray Davies, at the 2005 Tibet House concert in New York, and last year collaborated on material with late rock pioneer Ike Turner.

Auerbach says those tracks, which found the Keys and Turner collaborating in different studios, will likely be released at some point.

As previously reported, the Black Keys' new Nonesuch album, "Attack & Release," is due April 1 and was produced by Danger Mouse. First single "Strange Times" will be supported by a Lance Bangs-directed video.

A U.S. tour kicks off in mid-March at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. [Billboard]

anyone else a little bummed out by the shiny production quality of stranger times? of course im going to reserve judgment until attack & release comes out, but i just am not sure how much this method of recording suits the keys.

It's different, yes. But it's good. They have had 4 albums of the same kind of sound. This new studio sound should be a nice refreshment.

I can't blame them for trying to switch things up, but the single does have be a little nervous. I'm cool with the idea of their sound evolving, but at the end of the day I hope it's still a Black Keys album and not a Danger Mouse album!

The new album is wonderful. The 'Remember When' Side A/Side B is some of the best work they've done. People will probably recognize this to be their best work.

Well, first off, it's called Strange Times. Second, it is the shit. And 3rd, seeing Dan Auerbach and Brian Burton in the same room is too cool.

The new album is fantastic! I can't wait to buy a real copy, as the mp3s I downloaded aren't the world's greatest rips. I was skeptical of the changes and the production, but it all works beautifully. These guys can make any sort of album they so desire, it seems. Superb, once again, and if they aren't careful they may find themselves on mainstream radio and TV, finally.
