call me curmudgeonly but this just looks quirky for the sake of being quirky

ie: annoying

ie: I have no soul and can't have fun in life because I think this looks stupid

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 11:26 AM

the guy is fat and balding. cut him some slack here.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 11:40 AM

the trick with dan deacon is is that hes all about having fun and if your too busy worrying about other stuff than your probably just too upset to deal with that sort of thing.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 11:58 AM

Other stuff as in that the music sucks? Yeah I guess that's not something to concern yourself with.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 12:04 PM

Dan Deacon is great fun!! Go pick on Colin Meloy

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 12:11 PM

I haven't seen that many white people in one place since my last time in Williamsburg.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 12:34 PM

the show looks like it was a TOTAL success woohoo for dan deacon and his love for fun!

Posted by anonymous | February 9, 2008 12:42 PM

Too bad this stupid whitey--I mean Whitney--self-love fest didn't coincide with the Kara Walker exhibition.

Losers.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 12:57 PM

Was Eddie Vedder or Daft Punk there?

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 1:32 PM

This show was utterly geeky. First off all, if you see DD once and you are 19 and you are slightly geeky you are in for a treat. DD will give some you activity-based group dancing instructions while shouting out quirky nonsense. After you get to make corny jokes about Ethan Hawke or other asinine things and make references to things you are too young to get. You just know its cool because everyone here is caucasian, and an art fag 17-21 yrs old. Sorry.

I know, my negative attitude makes me sound vicious and intolerant. But I really guess this only could be fun if you are totally fucked up are a just totally young. Dont get me wrong, I do enjoy listening to Spiderman of the Rings and think he is really original. But I don't hear that at any of the shows it just seems like a huge geek-fest. Maybe I'm too old, its not like I don't have fun (think css-studio b, kanye-amnh) it just seemed boring and lame. Its just not my cup of tea I guess. When mike skinner gave dance instructions I wasn't nearly as embarrassed. I think DD should play a quiet show where the lights are off and everyone is sitting down, but then I guess you could just do that in your room.

Then I think whats the difference between Dan deacon and I? We both are friends with Jt from high school. We both give teenagers instructions. And goddamn if you gave me some supplies and a studio I know that I could make dance music with samples and speed up cartoon voices. So maybe I should go do that..or not.

does tan count? i think i see a tan person.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 1:39 PM

ok, here's what always bugs me about DD. yes. performing in the crowd gives you great photo-ops. but if you're actually IN said crowd its fucking pointless. you might as well go see a DJ

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 2:21 PM

dont steal my shit and put it on this site. i could defame you in a minute.

Posted by fuckyou | February 9, 2008 2:21 PM

what was stolen?

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 2:32 PM

i apologize - it was perfect

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 2:34 PM

agreed...it's probably mind-blowing if you're 19 and you've been listening to too much Interpol and finally just got out of your parents house.

at 31, i can't imagine it would be all that awesome.
i can't fault him for doing what he does, though. beats being in a cubicle all day.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 2:45 PM

also, do we NEED this many cameras at shows?
seriously...christ.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 2:46 PM

There was an entire video crew from Billboard, RollingStone (online and print), and crapload of other media were on hand. Whitney wanted this covered.

Posted by GOPster | February 9, 2008 2:57 PM

Yellow is the new black.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 2:58 PM

remember when dan deacon put out avante-garde classical records?

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 3:48 PM

i bet whitney did want this covered but i also bet dan has a serious pr machine behind him. im a fan but i mean theres a lot of hype right? for good reason but still...

Posted by bloohbear | February 9, 2008 3:58 PM

Eddie Vedder is the new Daft Punk!

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 4:02 PM

people had fun. it was free. who cares.

Posted by jason | February 9, 2008 4:05 PM

I like Dan Deacon's music. I've never been to one of his shows, but they look like a lot of fun if you're the unselfconscious type who can really let yourself go (not me). I'm sure the crowds have their share of scenesters trying to be part of the next big thing, or folks who like being weird for the sake of being weird, but that's not how I'd describe Dan Deacon or his music. It's intricately constructed stuff that, for me, is very rewarding because I keep hearing new stuff in songs I've listened to over and over again. The reference someone made to classical doesn't surprise me; the first musician I often compare him to is Philip Glass, if Philip Glass were hyperactive and composed on a Super Nintendo.
I don't like all of his stuff, but what I do like is some of my favorite music of the last several years.

p.s. I'm 29-year-old white dude, but I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.

Posted by DBM | February 9, 2008 4:17 PM

I think there is a black skinned person in the 9th picture down!

Posted by DMB | February 9, 2008 4:34 PM

i was here

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 4:36 PM

There was plenty of black people there. I don't know how Dan Deacon could even vaguely be pegged as a white artist.

Also, thats not a joke. He has three albums that are just really difficult avante garde classical.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 4:55 PM

let young white people have their idols

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 4:59 PM

Someone took copied and pasted my review with out asking on this site. The someone who did this is a someone who recently moved to brooklyn and thinks they are the master of the brooklyn music scene there, yet just a year ago claimed that everyone in brooklyn was a scenester. Said person hasnt realized that shit was going down while they were in diapers and listening to dmb in the suburbs and constantly judges things without getting to know what he is talking about.

I just think its wrong to takes someone's word and put them somewhere without permission. Especially because it was meant for my own outlet not for the indie masses to read.

I don't consider it a compliment either from someone who is hypocritical and says nasty things about people and acts fake just so they can feel like they have a friend or two in this world.

LAME!

To me, DD's schtick is just that: a not-so-new gimmick erasing the boundaries between audience and artist. Sadly, that "anti-establishment" or "anti-rock star" challenge is old news. Behind the enthusiasm and the crowd (sounds like a consumer fad), what will hold this whole thing up in the future? How many times can it continue to be "wild," "weird" and a "challenge to convention"? We went through the boring '90s where no one danced; during the early '00s it became cool and subversive again to dance and knock about. Things come and go.

What worries me is that somewhere between the masks, glow stick and callow receptivity to the "possibility of performance," whatever concept that might have existed beneath the music got lost. Totally predictable performance art is, well, what killed punk: "here is where we all go nuts and slam dance."

Finally, the whole Greyhound controversy was just too much. In every early interview, DD made such a point to include the fact that he toured the country on a Greyhound bus, which was the most indirect form of marketing there is. . . in his case, an attempt to show how DIY he was; the dude doesn't even need a car to get around--sounds like Minor Threat circa 1981. When Greyhound got wind of it and tried to use his rhetoric to their ends, he opposed the whole thing as another example of corporate exploitation. Just sounded to me like one marketing campaign against another.

Plus, how anti-corporate/establishment could DD be if he is playing the Whitney? It doesn't get any more establishment than that.

Yawn.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 7:33 PM

Why does Dan Deacon stir such hatred among the Brooklyn Vegan scrooges? Go ahead and dislike him all you want, but it doesn't look like the people in the audience are having a bad time, does it? And making fun of him for having white crowds? Give me a break.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2008 7:43 PM

The problem of deacon keeps me up at night im a dick i agree with anonymous

Posted by petey pablo | February 9, 2008 7:44 PM

Anon 7:33, you're taking him way more seriously than you need to. It's just crazy fun, I didn't dig it at first, but it grew on me.

this is the most negativity directed at anything so outright positive. dang, kids is bitter!

Posted by chococat | February 10, 2008 9:19 AM

Positive? You are being too simplistic. Next you are going to chime in with, "it's all good, man."

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 12:10 PM

These comments make me sad, NY is dead. Dan Deacon is great, his shows are unpretentious and fun. If you don't like it it's not for you, get over it, you're old and in the way.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 12:15 PM

i am old and in the way.

thank god

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 1:40 PM

Again, the point needs to be made...without the internet and music blogs, dan deacon would still only be playing at his friend's house parties. A few years ago, you would never hear of this guy. That is a fact and if you deny this then you are just delusional.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 4:34 PM

News flash, Anon. 4:34: ALL musicians, good and bad alike, need publicity. The amount of publicity an act gets is a very unreliable indicator of its worthiness (however one defines that).

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 4:54 PM

if I had to choose between Dan Deacon and jail, I'd pick Dan Deacon every time...

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 5:08 PM

Anon 4:34, even though you are using your clever Karl Rove tactics on me, i will refute your "fact!" The reality is (you like that one?) that his music is catchy, and people have fun at his shows. You clearly don't agree that it is catchy, and clearly do not enjoy his shows, and more power to you for it. However, the real "fact," is that others do enjoy him, he works his ass off and tours non-stop, and each time he returns to a city, generally speaking more people come to see him play than did the previous time. Sure the Internet has been very helpful in getting the word out (largely by making it easy to see what his shows are like...fun...for some), and his success may not have happened so quickly pre-Internet, but as you may have noticed, the Internet is a "fact" that everyone has to deal with and take advantage of (or not).

I can only assume that people who post on this blog are generally college educated (or maybe in college). It really baffles me how many comments consist of "xxx is bad, this is a FACT." Such eloquence will never lead to useful discourse, just grumpy e-people.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 5:08 PM

what time did daft punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 6:12 PM

Actually, the Whitney didn't really want the coverage -- I was part of the Billboard crew and the staff there were total douches to us. Everything was very poorly organized and I highly doubt we'll be dealing with them again. Their loss.

Dan Deacon puts on a fun dance party. Not much to analyze beyond that. He was a cool dude once we finally got our interview (in the cold, on the street, way after the show ended).

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 6:21 PM

Anon 5:08, nice attempt at trying to be erudite but here is clearly another fact and it is about you. You are a moron.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 6:31 PM

Yes, nice fact 6:31. Really furthering this discussion. Here's a fact: your butt smells like poop!

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 7:26 PM

I am pretty baffled by anyone's choice to focus on the racial make up of a crowd at any show. Have we had so much PCness shoved down our throats that we think real life has to have an equal balance at all times of all minorities everywhere? THAT's fuckin lame. A delusion afforded only to those that don't venture out into the real world too often.

The other thing that's odd is that anyone who is overly critical of Mr. Deacon here does it in a long-winded self-aggrandizing diatribe. Sort of like a lengthy explanation for a crappy piece of art, to provide it with validity. Whatever happened to enjoying something because it is beautiful?

Posted by anon | February 10, 2008 7:44 PM

it would have been better if he played the Kara Walker closing

Posted by paul | February 10, 2008 9:18 PM

I really love this stupidity but couple of things....

Something tells me that a year from now it is going to be Dan Deacon who??? These guys have shelf lives smaller than Anon 5:06's brain.

Seriously you give this guy way too much credit. You can put a bunch of kids in a room these days and have a guy slam on keyboards while farting and burping and they would go crazy.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2008 9:59 PM

lets over analyze this. this is something that needs to be over analyzed. lets over analyze this.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 12:53 AM

guys, I was there, and I thought it was a fantastic show 5/5.

As far as camerapeople, there was a guy videoing right by the table and Deacon told him he didn't want him there because he would be getting too distracted. So the guy actually went up and behind the table and taped from there.

But whatever, thats the society we live in now, if you didn't film it tape it photograph it and then wrote about it, it's like you weren't there. Right guys? You know I'm right.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 12:55 AM

BTW- It wasn't as bright in there as those pictures would indicate. The last photograph in that set, that's about the accurate representation of how it actually was.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 1:04 AM

College kids are so kooky. Ever seen that Juno movie? Geek is the new cool, which really sucks.

Buy some Sun Ra records and get a music education that pre-dates 2006.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 10:05 AM

does Sun Ra have a myspace?
didn't he do a 7" with LCD Soundsystem and play at Joe's Bakery?

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 12:40 PM

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 12:56 PM

I used to live with Dan. He and I have differeing musical taste and I probably wouldn't have discovered his type of music if we weren't friends. I have a love/hate relationship with it. But believe me, beyond all the bs, there is one thing I am absolutely certain of...He is a very knowledgeable and capable musician. Trust me. This guy's a genious. (And he's gonna be around a long time.)

Posted by William D. Stevenson | February 15, 2008 9:40 AM

lol, dude you spelled genius wrong. And yes I think he is.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2008 9:57 AM

I rarely join in on these things but feel I need to this time out of respect for someone who is musically quite innovative and obviously works so hard at it. I went to two shows in Melbourne recently, and it was impressive to see a performer who could make their audience (of all ages) overcome their self-consciousness and just have a good ol' time.

Go on, let him move your cynical souls, all the way to Baltimore.

I was there. I guarantee you you would have had the time of your life.

Posted by Anonymous | January 9, 2009 4:09 PM

to me it feels like mildly pleasant house music for beginners... some indie rock fans can handle this without getting too uncomfortable... but some here are obviously frightened because conflicts with their rigid definition of what is 'good'... very analog sounding... likeable... fun... reminds me of sesame street... a bit like Mates of State gone electro... no need to get angry about it folks... try some aphex twin, venetian snares, orbital etc.
