NYC band Spanish Prisoners opened the show at Highline Ballroom, AND played some songs as Daniel's backing band. I was curious to know how that all came about, so I asked Spanish Prisoner frontman Leo Maymind about it before the show. He said....

I've always been a big fan of Daniel's music- it has a very innocent quality to it that attracted me to it. I saw that he was coming to New York and I got in touch with the venue, and we arranged the show so that my band, Spanish Prisoners, could open and back Daniel up for his set as well. This is something he's done in the past with previous tours, so it just worked out really well.

...we're only backing Daniel at this one show (as of now). We're going to be doing 5 or 6 songs with him, and he may be doing some solo, and some with his own guitarist.

I actually chose the songs we're doing with him from a list of possible songs. We rehearsed them on our own and are going over them with Daniel quickly at soundcheck. It's definitely an off-the-cuff sort of thing, so it'll be interesting and loose.

if the roster of people who have covered his songs are any indication, this guy is a living legend. even if he did eat all the pies. and beth ditto.

leave it to brooklynvegan commenters to be indiscriminately cruel to one of the greatest songwriters of our generation.

unless you're skinny and "hip", your music doesn't count.

gotta love how "indie rock" has become as shallow and superficial as the pop that we've tried to distance ourselves from.

Saw Daniel on Sunday night in Baltimore. They had a similar thing going with the local band Jason Dove and the Magic Whip. I guess they must have done the same with picking out songs and rehearsing at sound check.

ok i arrived to this show as Mexican Criminals came on
The lead singer was rocking his sweater cardigan proudly,
The whole thing remnded me of a very long christmas time Gap Commercial. So the guys gets everyone to look him in the eyes and goes "1-2-3-WE ARE SPANISH PRISIONERS FROM BROOKLYN"very timidly.I was not conviced.I gave these guys two songs of my time but had to ditch when there was a whistle solo.
everyone who was waiting outside for a ticket asked me how the band was, I said "KidsBopz sung by grownups"
Then on top of that tey made no positive cotribution to daniel set
+the keyboard player was out of tune and loving it

Warning:This band will ruin any musical exp. you throw them in

He did the same thing with Beaten Awake in Cleveland @ the Grog Shop. it was a great show!

The Capital Years were amazing as Daniel's backing band in Philadelphia. They did a great version of "Worried Shoes" - a classic Johnston tune. They also did a good cover of "I'm So Tired." Daniel sounded right on singing..."Give you everything I got for a little peace of mind!"

Posted by T | February 27, 2008 8:32 PM

zacsirna, you are an idiot. You judge a terrific band by two songs, and "ditch". Spanish Prisoners are an excellent band, but you'll never know that if you're concentrating on sweaters, whistles, and your own very unfunny Gap references.

Maybe they are excellent. Maybe not. But my god did they butcher Daniel's songs. Not only that but his songs deserve some fucking respect. These guys were laughing with each other and talking to people in the audience during tracks. Are you kidding me? This living legend, who is pouring his heart out, has to be backed by these condescending pompous idiots. The concert should have began with and ended with his solo set, which magnificent and powerful. Sad.
