This is such a packed event, I called Studio B they said Spank Rock sometime around 11-12 and the others following. I am going to assume the Busy P/So_Me/The Rapture DJ sets will be last.

The Dj sets are nothing to shout about and oh GZA...Yeah did he not play like a month ago 2 shows at the Knitting Factory and the comments completely shitted on him.

Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2008 6:47 PM

yes this is all true, but to have all of that in one night, at one venue and not needing to head into Manhattan is what will make this alot of fun. I give a shit, thats who.

"yes this is all true, but to have all of that in one night, at one venue and not needing to head into Manhattan is what will make this alot of fun. I give a shit, thats who.

Congrats moron.

Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2008 9:51 PM

Did Spank Rock ever go on?

I also heard he was sick and wasn't going on, yet told the promoters not to remove his name from the flier or report that he wasn't playing.

I don't know if any of this is true, since apparently everyone i knew that was going bailed when they heard he was sick.

But yeah, he does play about 8,456 times a year in New York. So no sweat.

Posted by matthew | February 2, 2008 5:31 AM

studio b fucking sucks. promoters fucking suck.

had everyone wait in line to get in, and then find out once youre in that the headlining act has canceled. then refuse to refund anyone's ticket. fucking bunch of shit-bags. weak dance party for a $13 (or more) cover charge.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 6:39 AM

So no Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, Delvin & Darko or GZA? Were there any "live" acts at all?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 10:00 AM

HAHAHAHAHA suckers although it is not like you were not warned in advance.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 10:25 AM

GZA went on at 2am.

Placed was pretty far from being filled though.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 2:02 PM

...and how was GZA? Worth the wait and other (no-show) hassles?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 2:43 PM

Naheem doesn't really have the say on whether his name remains on a bill, does he? And if he's not performing, don't the promoters have the responsibility for announcing that and offering refunds back?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 3:16 PM

wtf naysayers??? you got GZA and Ghostface instead of lame spank rock? who's dissapointed?!

studio b is amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 3:22 PM

ghostface was there?

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 4:04 PM

Gza+Busy P

Great night, backroom had great beats too

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 4:56 PM

who the hell was spinning in that backroom ? that shit was amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 5:03 PM

This show kicked my ass.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 6:16 PM

"Gza+Busy P

Great night, backroom had great beats too"

"This show kicked my ass."

OMG YES!!! BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR SO FAR AND MAYBE BEST SHOW OF LAST YEAR ALSO. HOLY SHIT JUST UNREAL. DJ'S AND GZA AND BUSY P. I MEAN YOU CANNOT PUT TOGETHER A BETTER LINEUP.

Posted by Hipster Loser(who does not get out much) | February 2, 2008 6:43 PM

wow - talk about a faggoty response - no one was saying it was the best show of the year buddy - just that it was fun.

Posted by Some people are mad they don't get out much | February 2, 2008 7:57 PM

umm, ghostface was not there.

and i dont care how good gza was..it wasnt billed as his show. it was a spank rock show. he cancelled...and promoters didnt tell people until they were inside and then refused to give refunds.

also, i willing to bet gza was added because spank rock canceled. so they act like they are just adding another artist to the lineup, when in fact they were replacing one. and they decided not to tell anyone that so that they could still fill up studio b. an email should have gone out as soon as spank rock cancelled, not the next day.

Posted by Anonymous | February 2, 2008 8:56 PM

it wasn't a spank rock show. there were a ton of people on the bill

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2008 10:36 PM

a couple of these posts make me start to think that some spank rock fans are nothing but scenester sneaker collectors that know nothing about real hip hop. i'm sure spank is honored to have the gza as his replacement on friday night. who wouldn't be. get a clue children

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2008 10:46 PM

spank rock was the headliner. he was headlining the bill. thats the issue.

and honestly, gza awesome. it was okay (sound was kinda poor). but i dont like paying for one show, and getting another replacement show thrown at me. what the fuck does knowing anything about real hip hop have to do with it. im sure spank rock was honored. but im not spank rock. so fuck off.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 1:40 AM

if you go to the website it says:

"featuring: spank rock live, DJ set by the rapture, busy p + so me, jd samson, and eamon harkin"

if anything busy p was the headliner - he closed out the night.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 1:00 PM

I was the promoter of the show - so let me chime in and explain what went down.

On Thursday, the day before the show - Spank let us know he was feeling very ill, and wasn't sure if he was going to be able to make it or not on Friday. He sounded terrible. We told him, listen - if you're sick, you need to get better. He has a hectic schedule right now - working in the studio on an album, flying to L.A. at the end of this week to shoot a video, etc. The last thing a sick person needs to do is hang out in a packed night club, stress themselves even further, and get worse off than they already are. (Also for the record - Naeem has never canceled a show due to illness.)

After speaking to Naeem - I spoke to his manager, who advised me that counting on him to play, while he was ill, was taking a chance, and to be safe, I should cancel his performance. However, Naeem being the trooper that he is, said, no, Lori, I really want to to do this if I can, so please wait before making any kind of an announcement, and wait to hear from me tomorrow (Friday, the day of the show) and ill let you know how I feel.

At this point, having sold as many pre-sale tickets as we did, at a higher than normal cover - I wanted everyone coming out to the party to feel like they were getting what they expected, and if you think you guys are all up in the air and stressed about all of this, put yourself in our position, kind of a nail biter.

The budget to produce this party was high - and that is why the ticket price was what it was.
The line up was STACKED with top notch talent - in addition to having Spank Rock on the bill, we also had The Rapture, Busy P + So Me, JD Samson, Tippy, Dances With White Girls, Any Pry, and Eamon Harkin.

(And for the record - this was NOT a Spank Rock show, it was never billed as a Spank Rock show - it was billed as Jonathan K's Bootay Shakin Blow Out.)

So, having the ability to reach out to GZA and add him to the bill, just in case Spank Rock couldn't perform, was the call I made Thursday night at 10 pm. We could just left it as is, and had the party go on with no one taking over Naeem's slot, but we didn't feel right about that.

Studio B agreed to allow us to stay open another hour, so regardless of what happened, we were going to be able to accommodate both Spank And GZA playing.

And i'm kinda baffled (i know, "baffled" is very throw back toScooby Doo) that people are actually complaining, that Spank wasn't there when a amazing talent - GZA "The Genius" was added to the line up. And by seeing the crowds reaction to his set, WOW. On the night, maybe 2 or 3 people said something about Spank having to cancel.

People get sick, if anyone here has a job, you've called in sick before. You are allowed sick days, and you make up what you missed.

Studio B does not suck, they were the venue we hosted the party in, putting blame on them, or anyone for that matter is kind of silly - cause "germs happen".

When we definitively knew Spank was not playing, we posted it on the site, and also posted signs around the venue.

We are looking to reschedule a performance with Spank Rock in the future, and we've announced on our site the details on how we are handling that. Basically - when all gets sorted, those who purchased advance tickets, and those that are on the mailing list will get noticed before the public does about the show, and we will offer discounted tickets to them.

End of the day - people had a great time, that's what matters. And we wish Naeem a speedy recovery.

www.mas-forever.com/blog is where you can do to stay updated if you like.

Thanks to all who came out and made it an incredible night!

Lori - Mas

Also - to clarify, Studio B was not involved in the booking, promotion, or ticketing for the party on Feb. 1

Should anyone who came out on Friday need further clarification on Spank Rock canceling his performance on Friday night at Studio B, all correspondence should be directed to:

Lori,
not to question anything you say cause promoters never lie, right? But according to at least one poster on here who was at the show there were no signs posted around the venue and people had no idea till they got inside. ANd it also seems to be that you found put pretty late because as late as 6pm there were no posts on your website saying Spank was not playing..
Furthermore, i take issue with a few things you said. Most of the artists you mentioned were DJ's that night and not performing so to speak. Big difference. As for it being a packed night club with such a stacked bill, let me just quote one poster on here

"GZA went on at 2am.

Placed was pretty far from being filled though.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 7:23 PM

no really, studio B is such a crap venue across the board, i have never had a positive experience there. from the 900 degree temperatures inside, with sweating walls, to the 900lb gorilla at the door, to the snarling "list butler", it sucks. not to mention the losers that show up, and i'm talking the locals.

PS some jackass earlier said "best show", i don't have to have gone to know you slept with the promoter, get off it. everyone KNNNOOOOOWWWS the best show of all time was "Daft Punk - Coney Island"

Posted by VV | February 4, 2008 8:59 PM

There were no signs posted outside and I didnt know until I got inside. I even called the venue an hour before I went (9pm) and they said he would be performing between 11-12. And I will be able to purchase new tickets at a discount? I sure hope your discount is no charge whatsoever. I felt pretty mislead, and this situation better be ameliorated or I will contest the fees with my credit card company.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 11:56 AM

I saw the sign! And it opened up my eyes...

granted, it wasn't outside. it was right behind the guy who sells the tickets. and thats why i left without purchasing one.

No matter what you do, you can never make everyone happy, that's life.

If you have an issue - email me personally.

We are working on rescheduling a Spank Rock performance, at this time, Naeem is still ill. As soon as he's better, we'll know more. Until then, there is not much else we can tell you.

As mentioned before, if you're on our mailing list, or purchased tickets via paypal, you'll be the first to know about the show and have the opportunity to purchase tickets at a discount.

Posted by Lori | February 6, 2008 1:05 PM

oh fuck off lori - that's such a ridiculous facade to hide behind. If you just let people know ahead of time - there'd be NO people bitching.

"You can never make everyone happy when you're trying to be a greedy bitch" - that's what you should be saying.

Why weren't people that even called ahead of time informed? Many people called the venue that day and were told it was still on. Why was that? That's some shady shit right there.

And it's because you didn't want to offer people refunds (it's laughable to hide behind the "it wasn't billed as a spank rock performance" defense ), you're hearing people bitch and moan. You should have offered refunds to those that wanted - and re-billed the show as a GZA show when you KNEW it was happening that way. There's no reason - other than your greed for the money - that you didn't.

So quit making excuses and just man up to the greedy-bitch-promoter you are.

Posted by Anonymous | February 6, 2008 1:35 PM

Maybe if you ever replied to emails, emailing you directly would be a good alternative.....

Even ticketmaster doesnt suck this hard

Posted by Anonymous | February 7, 2008 8:45 AM

Lori, look it seems like this wasn't the easiest situation for you. This kind of shit happens, and you're forced to clean up the mess. And it seems like in the short amount of time you had to make something work, you were able to get GZA to replace Spank Rock if necessary.

But please don't act like we didn't know what we were getting into because it was booked as someone's party, not a Spank Rock show. Spank Rock was the first artist on the poster and in every listing I saw. This is who people came to see and this is how people referred to the show. Don't try to run around that now by saving it was billed as a party.

Also, as far as all the talent that was booked? It was all DJ sets except for Spank Rock really (I'm not counting Tippy because honestly, I don't think many came to see them).

I don't understand why you are "baffled" that people are complaining. The issue has NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW AMAZING OF AN ARTIST GZA IS. Yeah, he's great. But not the issue. The issue is people not getting what they expected and the promoter being really shady about this. Look, I didn't have a problem with GZA. But friends of mine who like Spank Rock but have never listened to GZA (call them whatever you may) were not so happy. Can you now understand why people would complain? Especially when no one on the night of the show would give anyone a straight answer? You really shouldn't be so baffled.

Also, I'm pretty sure more than 3 people came up to say something. It just so happens that no one at studio b would give anyone a straight answer and kept giving everyone who came up to question what was going on the run-around.

As far as posting that Spank Rock had canceled on the site, I don't know about. But there were hardly any signs around the venue. You kept people waiting in line until almost 11pm and didn't tell anyone there. Then once inside, I only saw 2 signs, and they were at the location where you could buy tickets next to the coat check. Mind you everyone who bought their ticket online went in through a different door, so they never saw these signs and weren't able to find out that Spank Rock had canceled or ask for a refund until they were already inside the venue. I saw no signs anywhere else. Now seriously Lori, this sounds shitty.

I think given the circumstances you pulled off a pretty awesome event. But that doesn't change the fact that a lot of things were handled extremely poorly, and you should realize that and own up to it.
