Hello Blue Roses @ Glasslands, Brooklyn, NYC - pics & video
photos by Leia Jospe
Destroyer's Dan Bejar (also of the New Pornographers and Swan Lake) is the more high-profile member of Vancouver's Hello, Blue Roses, but the duo's work actually hinges on the pristine crooning of Sydney Vermont. [Time Out]Hello, Blue Roses played their first NYC show (probably their first U.S. show even) at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn last night (Feb 16, 2008). It was also their first live performance together in 18 months. For more on HBR, see also....
I couldn't make it, but 'klk' said, "this show was ......interesting". More of Leia's photos, and a video by Sound Bites, below...

I was at the show. I thought it was good. I don't know what kik meant by interesting. Another meaningless hipster phrase. They seemed to be having fun and it was a pretty easy going ramshackle affair. Bejar was in good form. When i saw Carl Newman and Matt Houck/Phosphorecent there i thought a nice little indie all star jam might take place but nah. Overall short but enjoyable. The soul music dance off at Glasslands after was a hoot as well. Not as awesome as the Rubella warehouse party later. Did anyone else here go to that cause man that shit was crazy.
On a side note. I thought that might be Leia Jospe standing in front of me takng pictures. Wow Leia, not only do you take awesome pictrues but you are a smoking little hottie. What is your status?

I was there... definitely ramshackle. She restarted one song about eight times. But it was a relaxed, jokey vibe so no one seemed to mind. To me itt was very sort of '70s folk, a la Judy Collins (probably the flute that did it). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I like Destroyer and NP better. Shot video of them doing "Sunny Skies"

What time is Daft Punk a smoking little hottie?

Yeesh, you kidding me? Look at that neck.

Am I missing something? Last I checked, Leia's status was jailbait. Creeps!
Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2008 7:18 PM
I agree with 7:18. What's with the sudden emergence of creeps? Yes, she's pretty. No, you're not going to seduce her. Drop it already.

Umm ok i was the first poster so i guess this is for stupid anons 7:18 and 7:42pm. So the show last night was 21+ and over and they were checking id's at the door. Hmmm unless the definition of jailbait has changed in the last day or so, this girl is perfectly legal. And since when is it being a creep to tell a girl she is beautiful and ask her what her situation is?
May i suggest both of you go FUCK YOURSELVES.

Ooh ya know what I am the first poster again and I am going to do something no one does on here and apologize. I just looked at that link Anon 6:30pm put and I guess that is Leia's MySpace page. She does say she is 16 on it(she also does say she is divorced...) Anyway although the girl does not look at all 16 and she was at an over 21 show I really only knew of her pictures until now. So knowing she could well in fact be jailbait I am going to say sorry for the original comment. That is gross. I guess i should go FUCK MYSELF.

No worries, Mr. Pedophile. She is cute and talented and in a couple years, you can make your move.
Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2008 10:49 PM
Agreed, she is very cute.
Luckily I can say that and not be a pedophile like you because im under 18.

Hopefully when she grows up she'll know that it's bad etiquette to send text messages while standing in the front row while a band is playing. The camera flash is a bit tiring, too.

Leia's a good friend of mine, and I went to this gig with her. We both go to lots of shows, and we know there's certain etiquette; however, it was either a quick text in the front row, or having no place to stay for the night because of a previous miscommunication. We apologize.

"No worries, Mr. Pedophile. She is cute and talented and in a couple years, you can make your move.

Lame snarky response AnonaMORON but as stated above I had no idea how old she was(not to mention once again she was at a 21+ show) and then once i found out I apologized. Hopefully the unfunny attempt at being clever was not based on a lack of knowing what a pedophile actually is. Cause then you would be unfunny and stupid as well.

"Agreed, she is very cute.

Since when does saying a 16 year old girl is cute make you a pedophile???? There is nothing lucky in your statement Anon 10:55pm. I think it actually only shows you must have got hit with the stupid stick one too many times.

"interesting" = kind of weird, super low-key, not really what i was expecting (i had not heard the album yet)
that said, when they could get through a song successfully, her voice reminded me of vashti bunyan's.

not to change the subject but...i really am glad i saw this show. I thought glasslands was the perfect space for what dan & sydney are doing. it was mellow, friendly and hip and i felt like the crowd responded nicely to that.
Hello, Blue Roses were loose and had fun with the songs and even with a little blunder it all translated pretty well because they seemed so comfy. That's saying a lot, too! Am i the only one who picked up on the fact that Sydney's super PREGNANT? I imagine that's why this was billed as the only show in 2008.
