Hot Chip @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - pics, setlist, stuff

Hot Chip @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - Feb 2, 2008 (ballulah)
Hot Chip @ Highline Ballroom

Hot Chip was perfect last night (Feb 2, 2008). I've seen them a few times, and this show was by far my favorite one, and without a doubt the best. The sound at Highline Ballroom was incredible. No technical difficulites. The lights were great. The crowd was having a good time and actually dancing. The band was into it. They played a nice mix of old and new songs, and they all sounded so good.

More dates HERE, and don't forget their new album "Made in the Dark" is out Tuesday! The setlist, and some official videos, below...

Highline Ballroom set list
Shake A Fist
Boy From School
Hold On

great time. anyone go to the afterparty?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2008 3:36 AM

I am almost positive they did not play One Pure Thought. I was waiting for that song and never came. The encore was just Made in the Dark with lots of guitar and then No Fit State.

Posted by Eduardo | February 3, 2008 9:24 AM

Eduardo's on it. This setlist looks like it's from the setlist the band was using, and I thought they nixed "Don't Dance" and "One Pure Thought." Must've had to hustle to Studio B. Otherwise f*cking amazing show, but I thought it a might bit trite to shave the setlist.

I was at the show last night also and i have seen them a few times before. I don't want to rain on the parade and they were really good tonite but it was not this super amazing show. It was fun and dancey but as usual with them, when they slowed down the show lagged. I think that has always been the problem I have with them not to mention it is so hard for me to get out of my head that Alexis looks just like this kid in my high school who always got the shit kicked out of him.
There were some funny cringe moments as well like after the regular set the band left the stage except for Al who was ready to start playing the next song and looked around and the rest of the band was gone. I think the audience had no idea what was up cause no one was clapping for them to come back on for the encore. Anti-climactic to say the least.
I agree though that the sound and lights were on point. Over and Over and Ready for the Floor killed. Fun show although nothing spectacular. Great to see the hipsters and nerds come around to this band though. I remember when Coming on Strong came out, I could not pay people to listen to it.

Well, I have seen them around six or seven times now and I'm with BV. They made "Made in the Dark" sound truly excellent, better than their previous show here. I am ready to buy it on Tuesday.

The tours post Coming On Strong, until now, didn't have much slow songs like they had last night and man, those sounded beautiful too. My favorite ones were Hold On, Wrestlers and Bendable Poseable.

Sorry for commenting a lot, but I am still excited. How about Alexis' belt for Wrestlers?

Eduardo, I am guessing you have often been in a situation with guys where you were "Bendable Poseable"?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2008 10:04 AM

"glad to see the nerds and hipsters come around this band"... from the dude who is the 4th person to comment on the show.

this was a great show! it was fun to hear the new album played out live. love the live arrangement of 'touch too much.'

i tried to scram out of the theater as soon as i could to get to studio b. ended up like 6th in line at the coat check. everybody seemed to have the same idea-must get to studio b-and the coat check was bum rushed by the crowd. chaos ensued. highline ballroom was not ready for it. by the time we got to studio b, there was a super long line and we gave up. went enid's. great bar. end of night.

fin.

god.. people still listen to this band yawn!!!!!!!!

Posted by adam | February 3, 2008 11:44 AM

After party was pretty sick. Except the L Train wasn't running past 1st ave in Manhattan. Got there at two.

Posted by Dan | February 3, 2008 12:43 PM

Well, yes, that was the pre-written set list, as I was jumping up and down to try and scribble it all down; but I agree with the above poster, Tito, that they skipped "Don't Dance" and "One Pure Thought." Further, they KILLED it.

Posted by Henry | February 3, 2008 12:50 PM

Yeah, everything Anonymous 9:35am said. I'm not going to belabor the point.

"it is so hard for me to get out of my head that Alexis looks just like this kid in my high school who always got the shit kicked out of him."

someone should kick the shit out of you

"someone should kick the shit out of you

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2008 3:12 PM"

Awww did someone upset the nerd. Sounds like Anon 3:12pm is having flashbacks to his high school days.

Thoughts on whether this show is indicative of what the April tour will be like? Or was it special for the album pre-release occasion...practically the whole new album and only 3 old songs, and just a little over an hour. I've seen them twice now but I still feel like I haven't seen a "real show" (other one was Seaport in '06, just an hour).

I'd have to agree with anon 9:35. I found this show a little disappointing. I think the Seaport show was better. I also don't think the sound mix was that great. I could barely hear Al and Joe's vocals and I was right in front center. They also seem to be scrapping some of the lush synths in favor of more percussion and guitar which sometimes ends up just sounding like a cacophonous wall of noise...eg didn't really love this version of boy from school.

*They definitely didn't play Don't Dance (Al apparently missed the memo).

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2008 4:56 PM

and now I am sure they didn't play Don't Dance.

Posted by Eduardo | February 3, 2008 6:34 PM

this show was special to preview the new album. that's why it was at such a small venue (and they're doing the same thing in LA). the guy in the back who was doing the electronic drums/programming was apparently sick (And they weren't sure if he was going to play until the last minute), so i don't think they were as "on" as they normally are.

i was on the stage crew for this show, and i can shed some light on the situation:

felix was really sick. so sick, he couldn't show up for the soundcheck, just came in right before the show and left soon after. they scrubbed both "don't dance" and "one pure thought," probably because of that. as for anon @ 4:56: hot chip travels with their own sound man. if you couldn't hear the vocals, then they set it that way. i thought alexis sounded great, and joe's vocals are supposed to be that quiet.

Posted by bentrup | February 3, 2008 8:38 PM

yeah they did a nearly 2 hour sound check so it's not like they half assed anything. i thought they sounded great regardless.

Posted by jason | February 3, 2008 9:05 PM

poor felix... he's had it rough these last couple years. feel better, dude.

Posted by bill p | February 3, 2008 10:43 PM

It always makes me laugh when someone says, "I was up front and center and the sound was awful." The sound is usually worst front and center. The sweet spot in a room is further back. Look at the set up above, if you're front and center you're actually BEHIND the speakers.

Last night's show was like the 80's on steroids. It totally rocked, and I thought it sounded fantastic from a technical standpoint.

Posted by ballulah | gabi porter | February 3, 2008 11:20 PM

That show was absolutely brilliant. Anyone that found anything wrong with that performance completely missed the point.

"That show was absolutely brilliant. Anyone that found anything wrong with that performance completely missed the point.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 1:09 AM"

Or was actually at the show and was able to distance themselves from the fan-geek and see it for what it was. A fun time but brilliant.....i think not. But please continue in another post and tell everyone what the point we missed was.

i was never impressed musically with hot chip but this show converted me. very lively and dancey. i dug it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 1:48 PM

One more, and counting.

Posted by Eduardo Osorio | February 4, 2008 2:06 PM

Hot Chip were great as always, but have to disagree about the sound. Horrible venue too. It almost ruined it for me.

Posted by marc | February 4, 2008 3:05 PM

thom yorke was there

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 4:28 PM

i thought they KILLED!! i agree with anon 1:09, phenomenal...

Posted by Anomymous | February 4, 2008 4:29 PM

To date one of the best shows i've seen. Brilliant they surely were...

Posted by mac 01 | February 4, 2008 4:46 PM

Who cares if Thom Yorke was there... did anyone else see Paula Abdul there?

Posted by Eduardo | February 4, 2008 7:04 PM

Thom Yorke and Paula Abdul were not in fact there you dopes but yes who gives a shit either way. I am tending to begin thinking that the people who say it was one of the best shows they have ever seen or a brilliant show are, much like Eduardo, "Bendable, Poseable". You know what im sayin. The guys who run up on stage at Morrissey concerts crying as if Jesus has just reappeared.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 7:16 PM

Anon 7:16, I imagine when you think something is brilliant and others think it sucked that then they are the bendable poseable haters and you see the light. must be nice to always be on the "cool" side of the bendable poseable line. why dont you let people like what they like and stop being so judgmental

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 8:26 PM

Another ticket gone to waste. You are a perfect example of what is wrong w/ the crowds in new york. By the way I am not a Morrissey fan...

Posted by mac01 | February 4, 2008 8:33 PM

Awwww Anon 8:26 and mac01, relax you 2 nancys......don't get your pink panties in a bunch.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2008 11:15 PM

Anon 11:15 See you at the next hot chip show, I will look for you in the back of the room desperately trying to figure out "why it is I am here"?

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 12:01 AM

"Anon 11:15 See you at the next hot chip show, I will look for you in the back of the room desperately trying to figure out "why it is I am here"?

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 12:01 AM"

Anon 12:01am That will not be me, daisy. I know exactly why i was there. To have a fun time, dance, and enjoy the music. I did all 3 things because the concert was very enjoyable. Was it one of the best shows ever? NO. Was it a brilliant show? NO. It was just a good fun time. I am able to keep my over the top superlatives for truly extraordinary events because I am not one of the "bendable, poseable" supergeek fans. Hot Chip could have come out and farted for an hour and these dopes would be on here the next day shouting their nonsense.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 12:18 AM

A response like that is to be expected...

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 12:36 AM

I did not see Thom Yorke there.

Posted by Paula Abdul | February 5, 2008 12:41 AM

"A response like that is to be expected..."

Cause it is a correct one

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 1:07 AM

"Cause it is a correct one"

maybe for you it is.

last word you prick.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 1:32 AM

""Cause it is a correct one"

maybe for you it is.

last word you prick.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 1:32 AM"

No it is pretty much the correct one for everyone except for the "bendable, poseable" supergeek fan"

Now what was that you were saying about the last word, pillow biter?

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 8:34 AM

"Everyone" who? All the people that are on this board agreeing w/ you. Oh wait there aren't any...twat

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 5:27 PM

Anon 5:27pm
Huh? No one is agreeing? Maybe you should learn how to read then fuckhead. Go back through the posts. A number of people have said it was a good show but not this insane killer show that some fools have described.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 5:45 PM

That seems quite a short set list..i wish they would play a bit more from the first and second albums
