Magnetic Fields @ Town Hall

Verbally meticulous, restrained and constitutionally glum, the songwriter Stephin Merritt is no one's idea of a rocker -- apparently not even his own. His band the Magnetic Fields usually performs in a quiet acoustic lineup. So "Distortion" (Nonesuch), their latest album, was a surprise, since its songs are awash in guitar discord over a big beat. Would the Magnetic Fields plug in and rock out for their four-night stand at Town Hall?

On Thursday night the answer was no. [NY Times]

The Magnetic Fields played their fourth of four shows in a row at Town Hall last night (Feb 24). These pictures from are from the February 22nd performance. More photos & stuff below....

Merritt, who played banjo, and Claudia Gonson, the band's pianist, shared the stage banter duty, while cellist Sam Davol, guitarist John Woo, and vocalist Shirley Simms remained largely silent. [Columbia Spectator]

Dear Audience from Last Night's Magnetic Fields Show at Town Hall,

Fuck you. I hate you. With your glasses and your sweaters and your need to let everyone know that you are enjoying yourselves. Granted, I was wearing glasses and a sweater and enjoying myself. But the thing that really got me was when you would scream and applaud at the beginning of songs with this seeming surprise, as if you couldn't believe that the Magnetic Fields were playing Magnetic Fields songs? The set list last night was great. They played "Epitaph for My Heart" and "Yeah! Oh Yeah!" and "All Dressed up in Jeans" and "The Book of Love" and "Take Ecstasy (With Me)" and cetra. But some of you were laughing a little too hard, and some of you needed the people around you to understand that you got it a little too desperately.

Highlights included a slowed-down piano version of "Take Ecstasy With Me" and Stephin Merritt (rather then Shirley Simms) singing lead vocals on "The Nun's Litany". Hearing his lush baritone utter "I want to be a topless waitress...I want to be a porno starlet" was utterly hilarious. Of course there were plenty of 69 Love Songs as well, "All My Little Words", "Grand Canyon' and the majestic "Papa Was A Rodeo" among them. [So This Is What The Volume Knob's For]

corporate casual needs to take it easy. sheesh. we all like the same music generally. you don't need to be so bothered. why not go to a fall out boy show or hanna montana to remind yourself how much you have in common with magnetic fields fans.

corporate casual is completely correct.
crowd was lame as shit and so desperate to seem "in the know".
magnetic fields were amazing.

It sure does suck when a crowd enjoys itself at a live show, doesn't it?

You complainers need to STAY HOME and WHINE to YOURSELVES.

that was last night's set

good job

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2008 1:58 PM

it was a bouzouki. not a banjo.

that lady is wearing a juno shirt!

Corporate-casual sounds like he/she might commit suicide one of these days.

As long as people aren't talking loudly, I don't care about the rest of audience. Last night I had no complaints about them.

If you are observing the audience instead of concentrating on the music, then you are not so different than the people you are criticizing. Stop self-loathing.

"it was a bouzouki."

you are a bouzouki

"all dressed up in jeans"!?
hahahahaha. of you're gonna act like you're better than everyone, at least get the song titles right.

but seriously, the laughing people were pretty irritating.

For the record, I definitely should stay home, and I am definitely going to kill myself, so you guys are really hitting all the nails on their respective heads, but as for "All Dressed Up In Jeans," that is a reference to what my friend Grace used to think were the lyrics to that song before we teased-for-hours-and-then-corrected her, so I am still better than you, Keith.

show was awesome. the guy constantly snapping with his fingers was annoying.

friday's show was excellent

Ummm, is it just me or was the Saturday show pretty tense up there? While I can appreciate Merritt's glum demeanor, the awkward banter followed by uncomfortable silences was just weird. Anyone else get the same vibe?

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2008 4:24 PM

i was at saturday's show, which even with the awkward and often comical silences was one of the best shows i've been to in a long, long time.

anyone know where i might be able to find a set-list for this particular night?

Posted by ian | February 25, 2008 4:29 PM

was it the same set list every night?

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2008 4:32 PM

Went to Saturday and Sunday. Almost identical regarding song selection; however, different order.

anyone know anything about recordings of the sunday night show?

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2008 12:41 AM

bouzouki, dr. columbia. bouzouki. jesus.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2008 1:06 AM

I was at the Thursday show, and I can safely say they didn't play Papa Was A Rodeo that night. Still a beautiful set, but it kind of irked me that that was the only night they didn't play it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2008 8:36 AM

"Merritt, who played banjo..."

cha, 'twas a bozouki. i was hoping i'd be the first one to notice that. oh, well.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2008 9:46 AM

I didn't really notice the crowd-- I was too busy enjoying the show.

Posted by DNY | February 26, 2008 11:31 AM

you didn't notice the thunderous laughter?

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2008 8:41 PM

the two boys sitting next to me ruined the first set for all around us.
The constant mumbled commentary, the off key singing, and the finger snapping.
When several of us apporached this wack job to clam down during the songs, he was indignant. Saying" Stephin likes the finger snapping" as if he was told this by Stephin himself at a party.

there's enjoying yourself at a concert then there is having annoying drunken conversations through entire concert. Two different things. The latter being just as annoying as someone talking in a movie theatre the entire time.

They just announced a show here in Minneapolis, and I was planning on leaving to go get tickets in about 15 minutes. Thankfully I did a bit of research ahead of time and decided it's not worth $30 to see every song performed in the same acoustic setting (their newest album is my favorite of their career, and it's noise-pop). Stephin seems like he's not even enjoying himself and he acts like its a chore to perform (and it could be for him, due to the circumstances of his hearing condition). I've read that he can't even tolerate the audience clapping. Everything I've read about their recent shows mentions the awkward mood, tension, and how unenthusiastic the performers are. Not worth $30. That's how much I paid to see Ween, and you should already know how fuckin awesome Ween concerts are.
