Maxim sorry for not listening to the new Black Crowes...
....before reviewing the CD

Maxim magazine has apologized for publishing a negative review of the Black Crowes' new album by a writer who hadn't listened to the whole CD.
The review in Maxim's March issue gives the Crowes' "Warpaint" a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five. The band posted an exasperated statement on its Web site last week saying the Maxim writer hadn't heard the entire album because advance copies weren't available. The Crowes' manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an "educated guess." [Yahoo]

They apologized to "readers" for the review. They should apologize to readers for the magazine as a whole, and apologize to the Black Crowes for the "review". What a disgrace.

I was wondering when you were going to post this news. Let me tell you people, this story is total bullshit. Pete Angelus is a fucking asshole and an idiot. Righhhhtttt, there were no advance copies of the cd going around. Hmmm how the fuck have i been listening to it for the last month then??? Hmmm how did Rolling Stone review it for their last issue then????? The reason they caught the Maxim guy is because they never sent HIM or MAXIM an advance copy. The reviewer got it from one of his fellow music critics, listened to it and reviewed it. But they can't say that cause its unethical and technically piracy bullshit. So they had to say this crap. The record is typical Black Crowes by the way. Some good stuff but nothing mind blowing. The first half has some great songs but then kind of gets boring for the rest of the album.

HAHAHAHA...completely agreed. Maxim is complete garbage. This, however, is more irresponsible than anything I could have ever imagined.

Maxim admitted in email to Black Crowes and in this public apology that their writer didn't listen to any more than the one song available online.
You seem to be saying that they would rather apologize for really awful journalist ethics even though they weren't wrong, than admit that the writer actually did listen to the CD that he got from another reviewer? That's some pretty bizarre convoluted logic you have there.

why does maxim even have cd reviews? isnt that the point of having blender?
Posted by jason | February 26, 2008 3:00 PM
what is this "Maxim"?

nyctaper,
I agree. Very convoluted logic but I guess they felt they were going to get screwed either way so it was say they never listened to the cd rather than admit to piracy. Either way it is awful journalistic ethics. Yes strange, but again a number of magazines have already reviewed the record. As well as it has been available on sites like rapidshare for the last month for the lucky few who knew what the masked title of the file was called. So for them to say that there were no advance copies sent out is just bullshit.

Maybe Maxim has more of a lead time than a month? It would be hard to believe that they did this because they didnt get a press copy, as you are saying.

Critics review albums based on leaking copies all the time. Many even openly acklowledge this in their review.

this can't be the first album they've done this for. i wonder if a lot of magazines do stuff like this....i've also always wondered how many times a reviewer for rolling stone/pitchfork/spin listens to the album before writing a review.

Has anyone read a review of the new Nas CD? What's the title?
Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2008 3:22 PM
its probably a given that their new album sucks balls. i know i wouldn't have to listen to the whole thing to judge. hell, i don't even have to listen to it at all. thank god.

"Maybe Maxim has more of a lead time than a month? It would be hard to believe that they did this because they didnt get a press copy, as you are saying."
Maxim's lead times are no different than a number of the other magazines that had the review in at the same time. Hard to believe they did this but unfortunately it is true.
"Critics review albums based on leaking copies all the time. Many even openly acklowledge this in their review."
Yeah no this is a false statement in terms of them openly acknowledging this fact. Please show me one reputable critic(not some internet blogger) who says he reviewed a record from a leaked copy or one they obtained through non legit ways.

I judge albums by the title. Who knows the name of the new Nas album? I'd like to look up a review...

black crows were always good. what you see is what you get with them--no airs and no frills. just a good jam band.

Over at allmusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave "Warpaint" four and a half stars.
