Salt and Samovar are definitely worth checking out . . .Except for the lead singer who seems too eager to be someone, they really seem to have it together and are putting out a new kind of old-sound . . . The drummer rocks and the harmonies make it all work . . .

I also heard they may be special guests later in Brooklyn . . .

"i love that sam champion is his legit real name."

How do you know it's his real name? People who work in the news biz and the like can have different names that they use professionally, too. For example, the real name of Dan Patrick (former ESPN sportscaster) is Daniel Patrick Pugh.

The XYZ Affair is a great name for a band. Drug Rug, admittedly, is not. But all 4 bands were very good tonight. This is how bills should be put together.

This was a tremendous show. With four bands (for $12 total), I really thought they'd be cutting some of the earlier acts short, but that didn't seem to be the case. Lots of locals on hand to give XYZ a big send-off on their national tour (at what seemed, at times, to be a big party for the band -- that couldn't stop smiling).

I enjoyed the first half of the Salt & Samovar set until they broke up that slow jesus-y song. They closed pretty strong though. Drug Rug seemed to shorten their set for some reason. Maybe the freaks up front scaring the crap out of Sarah?

And just an observation -- the photobloggers at this show were ridiculously rude, especially during Drug Rug's set. No, the Bowery doesn't use a barriacde, but that doesn't mean that comp'd photogs can push their way around the front to snap every freaking second of music from every angle, getting right in the way of paying customers.

I couldn't believe that with the photographers. They were more obnoxious than the one jackass jumping up and down on everyone. How the hell did they get that gig anyway? Me, I just had my lil' camera, no flash, partially blocked by the tall Stephen Merchant-looking dude.
I would have been more aggressive, and even shot a full song on video, but the crazy bouncer was there (long haired white dude, looks like he had his days in the Slayer pits if you know what I mean) and last time he threatened to take my camera away and he's crazy so I said forget it.
XYZ Affair had the biggest crowd of the night by far. Sorry to say that Sam Champion actually attracted a nearly same-size audience as they played but then lots of people in the back started to leave.

people complaining about the photographers are stupid, everybody there gave them their space i was at the stage and they were walking around me for xyz and then i look back and theres a big arc of people giving them a buffer, thats your own fault, crowd them, who cares. the guys screaming for sarah were annoying i give you that though. nice set by xyz though, they were just having fun very relaxed but still sounded good.

this show was sweet....Sam Champion definitely the band of the night!!!!

Drug Rug rulez.

Posted by Nate Duval Dot Com | February 17, 2008 10:53 PM

- Salt & Samover were just OK, good guitar sound though.
- XYZ Affair had biggest (and girlie-cutest) audience, but the rest of their songs don't match up to their final song "All my Friends" (which is great - watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IerHOrDQKW0)
And that Earth, Wind & Fire cover was lame shit.
- Drug Rug smoked. Full of energy, spit and flame. They rocked it out. Good stuff.
- Sam Champion? So boring - boring band members, no interplay, boring songs - they looked more bored to be there that we were. Only polite applause. And their choice of bad early 80s cover was THEE worst.
