Songerize - listen to anything
You just type in an artist and song and it starts playing it.

Tried a Baumer, American Football and Willie Nelson song (Always Seem to Get Things Wrong - his version) - nada. It did play Wedding Present and Bad Religion for me though.

Has anyone here figured out how this works? Where are they getting the songs from? I know it's not MySpace from a few clues, and one song I looked was encoded through iTunes. I would love some insight from our techies in the community.

Here's a guess: if you type a song they don't have, they store that request and get the song at some point, so we are adding to the songbase with each submit

it says "powered by seeqpod", which i've been using lately and does much the same thing - finding songs around the web and allowing you to make a streaming playlist (except not all the links seem to work)

I typed in "Game of Pricks" and it played the song, but not GBV's origial - it was some dancey, arty synth version of it....it didn't identify the 'artist'

There is also Songza (http://www.songza.com) that will bring up a list of songs that match what you were searching for. This will probably help get around any "multiple covers of one song" problems.

i think it's really cool. it found me a sneaker pimps song with the particular (non-album) version that I've been looking for forever. And when I typed in Get Down Moses by Joe Strummer, I got an excellent live version that is as good as the one on the album. So I don't mind the occasional alternate cut.

Ok I've been reading all these comments and comparing against imeem.com's catalog.
My Conclusion?
imeem, my favourite 'youtube for music' site, has a better selection than Songerize (and therefore Seeqpod) - and since it has a load of proper music features I don't see any reason to switch to songerize.
