Scott WeinrichThe Hidden Hand, Place Of Skulls, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and the aforementioned Shrinebuilder all have had one thing in common, the stamp of quality by doom legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Now Southern Lord brings word of "Punctuated Equilibrium", aka the "Wino" solo record! Backed by skinsman extraordinaire Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch) and Jon Blank (Rez n) on bass, the new record will be tracked by producer (and legend in his own right) J Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc).

Trap ThemFresh off of the right & left hook known as "Sleepwell Deconstructor" and "Seance Prime", hardcore punkers Trap Them will be bobbin' & weavin' through Europe and the east & west coasts through the end of April, including a date at the Charleston on March 12th and another at The Knit on June 16th. Look for them to support the massive multi-instrument collective The Ocean and grind pioneers Extreme Noise Terror in Europe. Sprechen about Germany's The Ocean, check out their guest blog over at Headbanger's Blog and if you play cello and/or viola and feel like touring Europe & the US, email em!

D-Beat kings Tragedy (ex-His Hero Is Gone) have added a May 2nd show at the Knitting Factory with Japanese hardcore band Systematic Death & Disnihil. Tickets are on sale. Definitely highly reccommended.....

Torche posted a new track from their upcoming Kurt Ballou-produced LP "Meanderthal". The track "Piranha" is now streaming at their myspace, and the "Meanderthal" track listing and updated tour dates (including a date with Municipal Waste & Iron Lung) is below......along with a whole lot of other stuff....

Hate Eternal - Bringer of Storms (from upcoming "Fury & Flames")

Opeth is coming with a new album, touring.

Emperor

"On Friday, June 1, 2007, Emperor played an amazing set at B.B. Kings in Times Square--one of only three shows the Norwegian metal group would play in the States." Guitar World has a video from the show - watch the black metal legends keep it icier than Lil Wayne whilst tearing through "Into the Infinity of Thoughts" and "The Burning Shadows of Silence" from the classic 1994 LP "In the Nightside Eclipse".

EarthDylan Carlson & Earth will release their latest opus "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" on Feb 26th, a twangy, dark western soundtrack-y effort that serves as a likely follow-up to last year's "Hibernaculum" and even features appearances on four tracks by the awesome Bill Frisell. Pick up the shirt/disc combo at Southern Lord, and if you are overseas now or in the next month, check em out (tour dates below).

The UK doomsters Moss have posted a sample from their newly completed album "Sub Templum" produced by Jus Osborn of Electric Wizard fame. Look for it later this year on Lee Dorian's (Cathedral, ex-Napalm Death) Rise Above Records.

Polish metallers Behemoth have announced that they will document their February 17th show in Paris for a new live DVD. In other news, the guys will take a time out from tearing up bibles long enough to support Dimmu Borgir on their upcoming US Tour. Dates below....

Yakuza - Black Market Liver from "Transmutations"

Gnaw Their Tongues

Crucial Blast has announced the signing of Gnaw Their Tongues out of the Netherlands, a harsh combination of the most frightening parts of black metal, noise, horror film scores, and doom.... this is what they SHOULD use for a soundtrack to horror films instead of the latest by Korn or Seether. Originally released only on CD-R (100 copies) and vinyl (500 copies) via Burning World Records, Crucial Blast will deluxe that joint with digipack and booklet by the end of May. For more info, check out an interview with the one man wrecking crew at Vampire, at his blog.

Mick BarrADD-guitarist Mick Barr has announced plans for his new project Krallice, "vitriolic time-stretching epic black metal" created with Colin Marston (Behold... The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Byla), to come out this summer on Profound Lore. The new Ocrilim LP, "ANNWN" is available now.

Speaking of Colin Marston, the Warr guitarist is currently hard at work behind the boards of a new Jarboe solo album. Look for Jarboe to count on the help of Kevin Hufnagel (also Dysrhythmia), Josh Graham (A Storm Of Light, Neurosis, Battle Of Mice), Vinnie Signorelli (ex-Swans, Unsane,)A Storm Of Light), and a few un-named others....

Warbringer - Combat Shock (from upcoming "War Without End").

Metalsucks has the out-of-print Warbringer EP for download here.

News Blast (Beats):

Matt Woods(Bloodhorse) sat down for an interview with the guys at Stonerrock.com. Recco'd.... Black metallers Nachtmystium are streaming a track from their new album "Assassins" at their myspace.... Deadbird (feat members of Arkansas sludgers Rwake) have announced a a split 7-inch with Burned Up Bled Dry to "either be a precursor, simultaneous, or the aftermath of" Deadbird's upcoming LP, "Twilight Ritual" on At A Loss.... Metal sucks! don't hype this shit.

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 11:26 AM

wow... Some closed off people here. Why, pray tell, does metal suck?

Posted by Vitriol | February 13, 2008 11:31 AM

This is the most exhaustive feature BV does. Even though I care about only 25% of the bands, it's a great update on what's going on in metal without having to talk to people wearing chains and eyeliner.

TRAGEDY!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 11:53 AM

at least metalheads are into actual music...hipsters, on the other hand, seem to be more interested in honing their thrift-shop-fashion/im-cooler-than-you/ironic-scenester sensibilities

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 12:01 PM

For what it's worth (very little?), I like all sorts of music, but metal is the one genre that really floats my boat. Always has, always will. It is a music whose evolution always blows my mind and keeps me interested. Black Bubblegum's posts are so crammed with info about metal past, present, and future and puts me more in the loop than I've ever been.

Posted by Klaus_Kinski | February 13, 2008 12:24 PM

What are you, Black Bubblegum's PR guy?
Can't wait to finally see Tragedy. I'm sure all you hipper-snappers will be there. See you in the pit... INTHEPITINTHEPITINTHEPIT IN THE PIT!

Thanks for the extremely thorough update. Looking forward to that Torche record. All metal fans be sure to pick up the latest Ocean record. It's fantastic.

Posted by Wayne | February 13, 2008 1:29 PM

"Why, pray tell, does metal suck?"
Moronic fanbase, 95% all dude-all the time-atmosphere at shows, dubious politics (Emperor!) , dubious music...there's a long list.

That said: I'll probably see you at Torche and Tragedy!

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 1:30 PM

DUBIOUS POLITICS!!!!

METAL IS OVER

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 2:12 PM

^^^YOUR MOM IS OVER...

Posted by ...At My House | February 13, 2008 2:23 PM

I'd rather listen to dubious politics than the apolitical faux emotional ramblings of a catatonic asexual "indie" hipster douche bag. Or hip hop artist. Or Daft Punk.

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 2:24 PM

Metal is over? How embarrassing! I am restructuring my musical tastes accordingly. Thanks for the tip Anon 2:12

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2008 2:27 PM

@ anon 12:01. Well said.

Though many would probably lump me in with "hipsters" based on my music-leanings, I'm outside that "crowd" because I don't brush up on all the things you listed, the things that seem of pinnacle importance to that segment. Hip(?)sters should love metal; the metalheads wear jeans that are too tight and drain-pipey (check), they wear beat up leather that's probably from a thrift shop (check), many have unruly hair (both scalp and facial, check check), and they wear out-of-date, clearly-worn-to-be-ironic sneakers (check). It's official: Metalheads = Hipsters.

And PS, there's so many strains of metal out there that you'd have to be pretty narrow-minded and uninitiated to apply the blanket statement "metal sucks."

Posted by anonymous | February 13, 2008 2:33 PM

Would anyone mind if we ban the "H" word? It's almost as a redundant and overused word as the "E" word.
