video of Daft Punk & Kanye West @ The Grammys

Whether it was the real Daft Punk playing at the Grammy Awards last night is being debated, and it is unknown whether the costumed people inside the pyramid were just pretending to push buttons or actually 'manipulating the track with 4 Lemur sequencers', but nonetheless......

They weren't "pretending to press buttons", they were manipulating the track with 4 Lemur sequencers...Google it.
Posted by madmang | February 11, 2008 1:10 AM
WRONG
you obviously have no idea how those sequencers work or operate.
Plus there is no way you can operate those things with giant thick gloves on dopey.
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 1:14 AM
Dopey? Dude, how do you think they operated their live sets? Not to mention, their gloves are tailored to be flexible enough to get touch sensitivity, otherwise, the entire Alive tour was just playing PLAY and making believe that they did something.
Hey, here's a thought:
Why don't you just say Daft Punk wasn't there? Better yet, say those were just two idiots standing pressing buttons at EVER SO convenient times for cues in the song.
They still looked good. Don't ruin the fucking enjoyment of others, douche.
And, yes, I know how they operate. I've fiddled with 'em before, but this performance was more simplified...so don't tell me what you don't know :)
Alright, great talking to you too.
Posted by madmang | February 11, 2008 1:20 AM
Wow, that was just kind of degrading, nice one kanye.

psshh...the monks did this in '67...Ramalamadingdong it.
Posted by Alex | February 11, 2008 1:25 AM
are you kidding me? they were not manipulating the track. you obviously have not seen inside the pyramid..that is not what they used for their live shows. sure, that may have been daft punk in those suits..but that performance was definitely staged and everything was prerecorded. kanye's yelling into the mic was the only thing real about it. end of discussion.
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 1:26 AM
I know this is not what they used for the live shows, they used Behringer controllers and analogue synths, whilst running Ableton.
For this, they had to have used the Lemurs. This may have been pre-recorded and such, but they're definitely using 'em, without a doubt.
Did anyone think the pyramid opening up was pretty weird?
Posted by madmang | February 11, 2008 1:29 AM
someone said somethign about not being able to use a glove

this Daft Punk pyramid reminds me of the debate whether Wham's Andrew Ridgely actually could play the guitar or if it was only a prop.

i just hate that such an amazing duo had to team up with a complete ass, can you believe the nerve of Kanye to try to stop the bumper music??? When is Kanye going to sample/produce his own song??? That grammy belongs to DP.
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 1:38 AM
that Kanye really grinds my gears.
I find him so utterly pointless that i can't help but wonder that if he is the type of person that, when you see face-to-face, is so completely ridiculous because when they open their mouth, out pours a stream of consciousness of pop culture garbage and declarations that nobody sees things like how they seem them that signifies to others that "they're not a threat, intellectually or physically to me, so i'll just smile"
and enough people smile and over time this garbage is allowed to broadcast on television.
just think that during his performance, that television company determined that that was the best thing that they could have broadcast for the good of the American public. Isn't that amazing?
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 1:43 AM
this was live. i was there.
they're using lemurs.
but none of this is pre-recorded.

daft pun is aight, but they've become irrelevant after working with that douchebag.
kanye west is boring to me. so are dorks from ohio who've moved here to ny in order to reinvent themselves into yupsters
Posted by liverthangod | February 11, 2008 2:18 AM
are all you talkers kidding me?
kanye and daft punk DESTROYED!
that was some bad ass shit.
Posted by eric | February 11, 2008 2:20 AM

Posted by liverthangod | February 11, 2008 2:25 AM
This performance leads me to believe that if this IS daft punk they're merely playing Gameboy when they should be playing instruments
Posted by ZacSirna | February 11, 2008 3:06 AM
that was pretty wank. why did the pyramid sit there idle for the first 3 minutes? Anyone who saw them live knows Kanye should have been in the background.
Posted by osage | February 11, 2008 3:26 AM
They weren't using the Lemur's to trigger parts of the track, I have a feeling it was to trigger effects. Look at the one on the left, the loop cycles are running exactly in sync with the song (circles), and guy-man is doing some sort of modulation with the screen on the right. To osage, I agree, should have been way more pyramid and daft, but the people in the crowd were showing some love - about 15 seconds in you can see someone doing the pyramid symbol with their hands.
Posted by Rockah | February 11, 2008 5:14 AM
yeah you can definitely see some people throwing up the pyramid when they come on. i wish it was more focused on daft punk since kanye barely even sings the chorus or really does anything during the set.
Posted by jason | February 11, 2008 8:37 AM
The problem here is that Kanye takes all the credit.
I can remember Kanye losing to Justice last year, throwing a giant tantrum and SCREAMING that he should have won (on television).
Now look at him, doing exactly what he whined and threw a tantrum about.
Kanye must have BEGGED Busy P on his knees to work with Daft Punk and paid MILLIONS for the rights.
He is actually a decent rapper, despite his massive ego. It is his hypocrisies that are making me laugh over here.
This is the music industry, folks. Everyone steals from everyone. It is only fair to get mad when people don't give credit. Kanye obviously doesn't give Daft Punk the credit they deserve because he makes sure he is not sharing the limelight, but only in the forefront.
I saw Daft Punk live in Toronto. TWO of my friends saw them in London and Tokyo separately. They do perform differently in each city and they are no doubt doing something in that pyramid. If you have ever seen them live, they do not bop around like that.
It doesn't really matter who was there, or what instruments they were using.
It's the Grammys. Amy Winehouse was probably held up with marionette strings!!
Posted by Kristina | February 11, 2008 9:03 AM
those aren't sequencers. they are control interfaces for software.
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 9:06 AM
People weren't throwing up pyramids in the crowd, it was the roc-a-fella diamond.

If you're not even sure if that was the actual artist performing, can you really consider that talent? I mean... it looks cool and all. And when it's played really loud on a good system, it sound pretty cool, but, come on, can you really consider this talent?
And Kanye West... that's another one I don't get at all. Compared to the old school... he's a joke. I mean he REALLY sucks. What a talentless hack.
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 9:24 AM
I would've much rather seen Daft play with other Grammy winner Obama...right??
Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2008 9:35 AM
can you hipster douche bags shut the fuck up for a moment and just state the obvious. Daft Punk played last night (and by play i mean were there and actually did something inside the pyramid), kanye west is a decent rapper, but an asshole with an ego bigger than the population of ny. and who the fuck cares how much you think you know about how the show was run cause you dont, its simple as that. stop acting like you actually know what your talking about and shut the f up.

Is it just me or does anybody else find Kanye a fascinating, passionate, and really damn ENTERTAINING artist?
Sure his ego is a little draining at times, but as he has said before "if other people want me to be great, and expect me to be great, why can't I think the same about myself?"
His dedication to the music and to his fans is pretty well documented and he is willing to take a lot of risks, both artistically and personally. I respect that.
I don't know, I always find myself making excuses for his "obnoxious" character and behavior; if you think about him as this goofy kid, which he kind of is, then his missteps and flaws become almost, well, charming.

I actually find him to be a moronic, stupid, classless, talentless fool. I really don't understand in the slightest bit how anyone could be entertained by him. Oh wait... it was kind of entertaining watching him make a fool of himself while butchering "Message in a Bottle" by The Police.

"Anon 1:27 That is the most racist shit I have ever heard" Finding Kanye West to be a "moronic, stupid, classless, talentless fool" is racist? Even if not liking a certain performer qualified one as being racist, surely you've heard more racist shit. I mean, did you even read the Nas/Kelis/Nigger comments? Also: Kanye West = Garbage.

Kanye's ego has toned down after the MTV Euruope awards. He did bite his lip and crawled to So Me asking him to direct his video like the D.A.N.C.E. vid. At least he realizes when you can't beat them join them.

This is the most inane and pointless debate ever.
Who gives a flying fuck?
Ya know, I've always wondered who the thousands of fuckers are who roam this city in the middle of the day wearing skinny jeans, a dour expressions, and with 4 day old facial growth.
What do these people do? How do they hold down jobs and live in this city looking like that?
Now I know the answer - they are the hipster fucktards who get into Brooklyn Vegan arguments about whether Daft Punk pushed a button or not during a Grammy performance.
Christ.

i just think that you guys have to stop talking about how much better daft punk is than kanye, obviously they both have talent in their own way and sampling daft punk was a great idea,
as to whether or not it was them it doesnt matter because they didnt do anything new to the song so going on tv for them was just for shits.
kanye defs did not beg busy p though, he lives in like an appartment in paris and kanye has like a mansion. money gets money in this case, sooooo what if they used lemur, or whether or not it was a roc-a-fella pyramid or a DP pyramid,, IT DOESNT MATTER, being right on a blog page won't make you a better person, knowing more useless software FAQ won't win YOU a grammy.
lol
no im not another anon with a stupid witty comment but heres one anyways:
hu hu hu, daft punks glasses look like the ones he wore in the music video. hu hu hu.
Posted by Chris | February 11, 2008 8:27 PM
kanye west is an ineffectual irrellevant cry-baby fashionista show-pony producer cashing in on hip hops weakest hour as it struggles for life in the clutches of worldwide corporatism.
& ripping off kool moe dees style was just lame.
he's a magazine mtv-baby who needs to get shot a million times for prostituting his mothers death into a stage antic.
i hate that guy, and im not a 'hater', to quote:
"Never accuse someone of being a "hater" when they have a differing opinion on a song, an artwork, or an idea. Whatever happened to genuinely not liking something? "Hater" implies a level of jealousy, but I am not jealous of The Rapture, wristbands, or Sex and the City. I simply don't like them."
id rather listen to 'soulja-boy' than kanye west.

Hey guys, sorry but they weren't playing. For one, the grammys, from a point of entertainment, if they could, and they did, would leave no room for error, because MILLIONS of dollars are at stake. Second, those two "guys" are pressing buttons way too fast, and too often to be "queing" the few elements that are to the "stronger" song.
it seems the general divide is between people that understand/operate equipment and/or DJ, and naive fans of music. to naive fans of the music, you will remain naive fans of """""music.""""" to people that have some orientation about DJing or production, i'm as disappointed as you are. and to the general population, a lot of you are distraught and passionate about something that has no pertinence to your life.
Posted by annonyme | February 12, 2008 7:17 PM
Daft Punk do not even perform at their own shows, why would they show up at the Grammys?
Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2008 7:26 PM
Kanye West = unoriginal and egotistical fucktard who's claim to being an artist is tenuous at best.
Daft Punk - pioneers that will long be remembered for the positive contribution they made to the musical landscape. Nobody will remember or care whether they actually performed at the Grammys or not.
Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2008 9:45 PM
Daft Punk= Awsome
Kanye West= Shithead
They were there, they did something in the pyrimid, and they should've had more in the show than their what was it 15 seconds?
You can bitch about what they did up in the pyrimid but they did something it was way to synced to by faked.
Deel wth eny speeling erors I DONT GIVE
Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2008 11:27 PM
Why would Daft Punk lend off their costumes for some other person to wear and not just show up and do it themselves?
Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2008 11:29 PM
im really nervous to post this because i know people are going to judge me as a 'hipster fucktard' or whatever. but if you don't like daft punk's music thats fine, but you cannot say they are not talented because they are just pushing buttons, thats absurd, they are the most influential house duo ever and they are incredibly talented at what they do, i absolutly hate the foo fighters and what dave grohl created. but im not saying that dave grohl isn't talented because he is really talented. just keep an open mind.
this is entertainment, take it for what it is if you hate it fine, if you dont thats cool too just stop trying to act like you know everything (sorry if i sound hypocritical)
p.s. on both sides of the argument
those lemurs look sweet as hell
and i really hate kanye as a person, but his outfit was sweet as hell. haha
Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2008 3:52 PM
My friend worked on the lighting design for the performance he told me the whole thing was done off a Protools session. Only Kanye was live on the microphone.
Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2008 5:03 AM
btw he also confirmed that it was actually Daft Punk up there. Class dismissed.
Posted by Anonymous | February 19, 2008 5:08 AM
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but,
... "yes" that was daft punk
BUT
... "no" it was Thomas Bangalter and Guy Man
Kanye had gotten permission to use the daft punk likeness on the award show... so if it was daft punk or not is all about how you look at...
And there is no need to explain how i know because i could say that I was anybody and could never prove it..
But after all the debate I find it somewhat amusing and a little hard to believe that most of the "fans" didn't recognize the obivious.... which Hero 2 (the rounded helmet outfit, worn by Guy-man) is as tall (if not taller) than Hero 1 (the squared off outfit, worn by Thomas Bangalter)... and in actuality Thomas is considerably taller than Guy-Man.
Also why would Daft Punk themselves suit up for 15 seconds for another acts performance? Why aren't there any other photos or than the processed image of the duo on the carpet or even backstage with Kanye? Just something for you to think about because you will believe what you want to believe...
oh and the whole thing about the lemurs... I have to be honest and say that I don't know.. but I personally would say no it wasnt live because the interface wasn't set in a practical way especially triggering what he was supposedly triggering.. that blocks were set at to many random intervals to be practical... I'm not saying it couldn't be done that away, but i think it was just done to look good...
but anyway you look at it, there were two daft punk robots there :)
