If you read this website enough, then you're well aware that Japanese rock band Boris played a show at Knitting Factory in NYC last night (March 4, 2008). What we didn't know ahead of time was that Michio Kurihara of Ghost would be joining them on guitar (although he did also play with them at their last NYC show at Music Hall of Williamsburg). More photos and stuff below...

Boris is a Japanese rock band formed in 1992. As of 2007, personnel are drummer Atsuo, bassist/guitarist/vocalist Takeshi, and guitarist Wata.

While most commonly associated with the doom rock and sludge rock scenes, Boris have also encorporated elements of many musical genres while maintaining an identifiable sound and quality. Some of the genres Boris have explored are psychedelic rock, punk rock, noise music and minimalist music.

Named after a song on the The Melvins' Bullhead, Boris formed in 1992 and released their first album Absolutego on their own Fangs Anal Satan label. Since then, they have released 17 studio albums (including Absolutego), and many EPs, 7" singles, and full-length collaborative recordings, on various record labels across the world.

Boris' music takes on an eardrum-blowing, all-out-sensory-assault quality in a small venue. Seriously--I'll be shouting without realizing it for the next couple days due to the incessant ringing that's eclipsing my every thought. [Self-Titled Mag]

Growing opened the show.

the show wasn't very good. i think it was also 200 degrees inside.

Very hot inside yes. Show was great. Guy above is a dope. I would give anything to fuck the shit out of Wata.

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 1:21 PM

i saw them at the annex or whatever for that free show. they were absurdly loud.

its a fun spectacle for a few minutes but im over it.

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 1:28 PM

i enjoyed it enough. they arent exactly skilled musicians, but the borderline apocalyptic shrieking made it worth it. i'm also a sucker for strobes +fog.

seriously though, if you like boris, the Acid Mothers Temple awaits . . . .

Posted by weed atman | March 5, 2008 1:29 PM

weed atman,
really they are not skilled? what do you play tough guy? where is your recorded work? YOU have no idea what you are talking about. They are very skilled. Kurihara who is playing with them is an amazing guitarist

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 1:42 PM

wow there are a lot of f*cking douchebags commenting on this shit.

i don't know how you could be there and talk shit about this show. you must be seriously lost.

oh and i want to fuck wata with that giant guitar

just sayin

"1:42 - perhaps you should click on weedatman's link...

Anon 2:12pm I hope you do not think that the guy posting was actually in Acid Mothers. Because then you would be an even bigger schmuck than that guy. Both bands are friends and would not talk shit like that. The moron was just linking to their homepage cause he likes them. And yes there is plenty wrong with his comment.

Boris >>>> AMT

i walked out of the last AMT show I went to.. just plain bad.

and I dig their CDs a lot.

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 2:19 PM

jimmy page is a skilled musician, not sure i'd put kurihara in the same category.

Posted by anonymous | March 5, 2008 2:20 PM

Jimmy Page is an exceptional musician and if you listen closely I'd say Kurihara is skilled at least, if not exceptional - Just a totally different player and less obvious style.

Any one have a setlist from last night?

Posted by Anon | March 5, 2008 2:26 PM

i'm not trying to talk shit about boris, just giving my review. their drummer is awesome to watch and has great energy, as does most of the band. I just dont think their song writing or technical ability is all that good. The lead guy/bassist has a voice that is almost never on key and his form on the bass is pretty amateur. They still do what they do, seem to enjoy it, and I enjoyed it. Ability to play an instrument doesn't make or break a band by any means, but I think it's worth noting.

Also AMT aren't that technically good, that's kinda why I made the initial comparison.

Yeah making the comparison btw Page and Kurihara is a little unfair dont ya think.

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 2:30 PM

I guess Kurihara never had the opportunity to steal black people's music, while Page made a career of it.

"I guess Kurihara never had the opportunity to steal black people's music, while Page made a career of it."

Unless you were recently blugeoned in the skull with a lead pipe, there is no reason for you to make such an uneducated and irreverant comment.

"I guess Kurihara never had the opportunity to steal black people's music, while Page made a career of it."

Yeah, Gaylord that was a dumb statement considering Page stole from white people as well ie Jake Holmes-"Dazed and Confused"

Hey Z, your fans are a bunch of Drama Queens... all these ego shit comments are really boring.

The pics are amazing as usual...

best band ever

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 4:20 PM

Boris put on an awesome performance last night, it was right up there with their recent superb gig at the Music Hall/Bowery Ballroom of Williamsburg. Their playing was pretty spot-on (I play guitar so I was watching them) and the fog and lights added to the show's mystical spectacle. Michio Kurihara was an unexpected bonus.

The only part of the show that sucked was the venue. When the 'Knit gets crowded, you have to contort your body and crane your neck to get a glimpse of the band through the heads of the tight, sweaty mass. Would it raise their electric bill so much to crank up the fans in the room for a little comfort?

HOw was growing's SET?

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 4:48 PM

They're chinese and play doom, or whatever you want to call it rock. All on a bandwagon...if they were from Wichita, KS...no-one would give a shit. I'll go listen to Witch instead.

Next.

Awesome show last night!!!

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 4:55 PM

the immaturity of some of these comments

boris is highly talented, playing a cross of different genres . missed last nights show but was at the bowery gig earlier this yeah and yeah wata is my moon goddess

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 5:17 PM

Does anyone have a setlist? They played most of their new album, but there was a song or two which aren't on there and I've never heard before.

Somebody needs to throw a big coke party in Williamsburg the next time Boris is in town, then the venue won't be overcrowded with douchebags. yeah, yeah, get your witty replies together- Boris was doing this when you were in 7th grade, fuck off.

Posted by gaylord fizzlebottom | March 5, 2008 6:08 PM

ordered setlist:

Farewell
Rainbow
BUZZ-IN
Laser Beam/Shoot
Pink
Message->Statement (intro was like the former, quickly became the latter)
Floorshaker
My Neighbor Satan/Next Saturn
You Put Up Your Umbrella
Just Abandoned Myself
Untitled/Bonus track

Show was great. Definitely better than the Bowery show from the Rainbow tour, probably on par with the MHoW date. Maybe even better. It makes sense that they didn't bill this as a Boris with Michio Kurihara show as it focused much more heavily on their own material (only two Kurihara collab songs on the setlist). I really don't understand how someone who enjoys them at all could have disliked this show as far as the music is concerned. It was fucking hot and cramped, though.

Boris + Growing = Boring

Fukkin wayyyy boring.

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 7:56 PM

I was in the front, really didn't think it was noticeably hotter than any other concert I have been to recently.

Good show for sure.

Anyone know what the DVDs they were selling have on them? Just live shows or is one a collection of music videos?

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2008 7:59 PM

the show was orgasmatic.
and ive been to a bunch

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 12:01 PM

Agreed about the orgasmaticness of it all. Amazing show. Kurihara on guitar was great too. I've got a little review up if anyone's interested - just click on my name.
