emo kids are being attacked & beaten in Mexico

A bizarre wave of mob emo-bashings is sweeping across Mexico. The movement is being generated on message boards and social networking sites by non-emo youth who highly dislike like the emo look and attitude. [the Daily Swarm]The Daily Swarm is staying on top of this bizarre story. Some related YouTube videos below....

Send that angry mob to the next Fall Out Boy show....start with the D-Bag bass player.

pls have more mexicans come here to beat up emo kids
Posted by butternuts | March 27, 2008 10:56 AM
This is only the beginning
Last Saturday night on Bedford Ave i saw a tourist yelling "hipster" and then throwing his pizza at some dude. The carnage was real.
It looks like the revolution has begun!

"they do not drink, they do not have sex, they do not have fun, they go to concerts just to cry, they go to parties just to sit in a corner and cry, and they feel victims of everything"
yeah, I'm sorry, you deserve to get beat up if you act that way.

What's wrong with you assholes?
Posted by chinolam | March 27, 2008 11:06 AM
emo is the new hair metal. fuck it all.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 11:07 AM

this is sad and pathetic. little hope for mankind.
Posted by anniemomus | March 27, 2008 11:11 AM
Nah, i'm for the bullies. Those emo kids are always looking for something to be whiny/sad about. The bullies are just supplying the demand. These hipster fags may think they're misunderstood, but the Mexicans seem to understand them just right.
I hope 30 Seconds to Mars has a show somewhere south of the border REAL soon. :)

"emo is the new hair metal."
No way. Metalheads back in the day were tough guys, or at least, no wimply emo guys. No one really dressed like a hair metal band, only the bands did.
Let's get the Bedford hipster beatdown rolling!
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 11:12 AM
finally...mexicans teaching us!
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 11:13 AM
They're doing these kids a favor. Beating some sense into them. Tough love.

It's like my dad used to say: "I'll give you something to cry about!"
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 11:33 AM

a: none, they like to cry alone in the dark.
bwahahaha!

I'm just happy to see the mexicans are finally getting some exercise. They're usually so lazy, taking naps under their sombreros and what not.
How long till Crunch starts "Cardio Emo-beating" classes?

Now that they're being beaten, I have hope that my children will grow up in a much better society.

Any current or former punk rocker or other type of outsider who ever got beat up by the jocks or the "in crowd" in high school should know that this just isn't right. Is emo lame...YES. Should being lame result in your ass getting beat in the street...NO.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 11:52 AM
Before you idiots continue encouraging this, please explain to me how this is any different than lynching. Because they have stupid haircuts or listen to music you don't like? Absolutely disgusting.

MX emo-bashing : violent homophobia.
"An Internet campaign is reportedly being waged to launch attacks against "emos" in other parts of the country, with various web postings portraying emos as "homosexuals" who give a "bad image" to tourists who visit their towns."

this is no different than fag bashing, which happens all the time in mexico too. glad all you assholes are down with mobs beating up people different than you, especially those that are powerless and weak. glad you're cheering on the mexican version of jocks, guidos, and other assorted small dick thugs.
so fucking punk.
if these tuff guys were real men theyd go beat up drug dealers and other criminal elements, you know a real scourge on their society.

Skaters, punks, goths and metal heads are so barley distinguishable visually.
Also i was under the impression that main reason to be Emo was in order to get laid.

I came here from another site, which has a forum discussion on this. Similar to here, there is a 50%+ portion of people advocating, supporting, cheering on this terrible behavior. Story time...
1983: I was 15 year sold and met a kid in school who was a brilliant artist. Drawing, oil painting, etc. Astoundingly talented. Oh, and he was gay. Being 15 and gay is an extremely hard thing. Teens are merciless, and as I found out, even murderous.
My girlfriend and I hung out with this kid because he was intelligent, cool, and we were artistic types as well( I played guitar, she was a writer ). One day we were walking home from school when 4 assholes decided to start trouble. What began with taunts of "faggot, cocksucker, shitlicker, dyke"... yeah, I was "gay" too, and my GF a "lezzie" by association, escalated into a group of over 30 kids that proceeded to beat my friend to death. Sticks, bottles, rocks, fists. My GF and I, along with my dear friend tried to defend ourselves against a mob gone savage. By the time the police showed up, called by a nearby store owner, I had three broken fingers, multiple lacerations, a minor concussion, my GF multiple lacerations and *the loss of sight in her left eye*, and my friend lying in a pool of blood, dying from blunt trauma to the head, among many other injuries.
Of the mob, only three ever went to trial, with two receiving probation and one 17 year old receiving 8 months in juvenile prison.
So, yeah, this is great stuff huh? I guess my faggot friend got what he deserved, right? How dare he or any of us live our lives without fear and threat of mob "justice" for the crime of being human.

I can't help but find humor in this!! However I thought I was going to get in a fight last night at the Fleet Foxes show in Philly, their set was quite good but some asshole wearing a "Brew threw" shirt was checking his voice mail right in the middle of every one, then intentionally leaning an d pushing people. I hope him and all though mexican guys are at sunset rubdown tonight that make a great scene!

Being gay is by birth. Being emo is by choice.
And I don't think emo = hipster. Hipsters are far worse. Emo kids tend to be high-schoolers.

Do you guys really feel that insecure about yourselves that it's a threat when others dress up or listen to different types of music? Are you really driven to rage by the fact that someone out there does not have the exact same tastes that you do?
Y'all really need to get lives

I wish I had a time machine so I could go back in time with a bunch of Mexican thugs and beat down the first kid who thought that emo was pop punk played by goths. We could save a generation.

Damn! Mexico Rules! If we apply those same tactics to Williamsburg mabye we can clear out those pretentious hipsters and take back brooklyn
Posted by pooch | March 27, 2008 2:01 PM
I love how people are posting vicious endorsements of mob violence and calling for this to happen here, on a blog entitled Brooklyn Vegan. For gods sakes, man, look at yourselves. Everyone reading this site would be beaten by the cholos if spotted.
This has nothing to do with people who like Broken Social Scene before they sold out or whatever the fuck. It is gaybashing, pure and simple. What fun! Let's kick in some faggots! I learned about it on a vegan blog!
Posted by Say Love | March 27, 2008 2:12 PM
Pooch, maybe you should read the comments. You're hardly the first person to make this stupid, unfunny observation.
And for the last time, what is a hipster if not someone who comments on Brooklyn fucking Vegan? Myself included. When you talk trash about hipsters, you're just expressing your own self-loathing. It's pathetic. Actually, the same goes for everyone cheering the emo-bashers. I wonder what you looked like when you were 15.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 2:13 PM
Thank you Anonymous at 2:13. Hatred and bullying of the different is tragic. I kind of hoped we were doing a little better as a species. I guess the fact that it's only around 50% cheering this on is a sign of progress.

Zeitgeist Burner-
I'm gay & I find this emo situation kind of hilarious. Gay people aren't gay by choice. Emo kids are. They weren't born with retarded-looking hair. Should they get beat up because of it? Probably not. But the fact of the matter is, they are, and I'm finding it quite humorous.
I love how these emo kids are beating treated as a race! That's the best part. I mean, come on. They're just goofy-looking kids with bad tastes in music. This whole thing will be over in no time. So let's sit back & enjoy it while we can!

"Any current or former punk rocker or other type of outsider who ever got beat up by the jocks or the "in crowd" in high school should know that this just isn't right. Is emo lame...YES. Should being lame result in your ass getting beat in the street...NO."
truer words have never been spoken.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 2:29 PM
Matt, what makes you think that you're being gay is any less of a choice than the alienation these kids are a part of? Is your alternative lifestyle more legit than any other? I hope you realize that what's going on here is very thinly veiled homophobic violence.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 2:31 PM

It appears my comment was edited with this:
"hahahahhahaahahhahahahahahaahaha lololol"
I have to assume the blog owner did so. How sad. By having open comments you are inviting other's points of view. To then edit their comments to things they did not say, esp. in light of the subject matter of my comment, and the added "comment", I mean, wow... You must be a really fun person.
To Matt, does it matter if it is a choice or not? Attacking people for being different, even if you think it is stupid, is a sign of ( no pun intended ) emotional immaturity at best, deep psychological problems at worst.
Posted by Zeitgeist Burner | March 27, 2008 2:36 PM

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 2:50 PM
haha i like when people comment here pretending like they are NOT hipsters
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2008 2:54 PM
It is truly wrong to bring physical harm to people... having said that, my initial reaction was to laugh out loud after reading that headline. Also, I think the Zeitgest dude's story is probably a total fabrication. Mexican emo? effing hilarious. we need some kind of non-violent backlash against all the queer emo crap here.
Posted by EmoJihad | March 27, 2008 3:18 PM
and another thing. I saw several comments saying "gay people aren't gay by choice". I seriously think the jury is still out on this issue. maybe some folks have a genetic predisposition, but there are others who are just weak minded or trendy or whatever and go both ways for fun and then get married and live a middle class success story of hell!
Posted by EmoJihad | March 27, 2008 3:21 PM
I find you lot amusing most of the time. However in light of this episode I find there's nothing to laugh at here so move along now please.

EmoJihad: The "jury" is not "out" on whether being gay is a choice. Every situation is different and people experiment with their sexuality (hooray for them), but being gay is not a choice for me or any of the other gays I know. Most people who insist that it is are just trying to justify their own homophobia. See your comment about "queer emo crap" for evidence of your own homophobia.

"A long disquisition [...] on the curious subject of "Crossword Puzzles" describes the phenomenon. Thousands upon thousands of persons, the majority of whom did heavy work and led a hard life, spent their leisure hours sitting over squares and crosses made of letters of the alphabet, filling in the gaps according to certain rules. But let us not be wary of seeing only the absurd or insane aspect of this, and let us abstain from ridiculing it. For these people with their childish puzzle games and their cultural feature articles were by no means innocuous children [..]. Rather, they dwelt anxiously among political, economic, and moral ferments and earthquakes, waged a number of frightful wars and civil wars, and their little cultural games were not just charming, meaningless childishness. These games sprang from their deep need to close their eyes and flee from unsolved problems and anxious forebodings of doom into an imaginary world as innocuous as possible. They assiduously learned to drive automobiles, to play difficult card games and lose themselves in crossword puzzles--for they faced death, fear, pain, and hunger almost without defenses, could no longer accept the the consolations of the churches, and could obtain no useful advice from Reason. These people who read so many articles and listened to so many lectures did not take the time and trouble to strengthen themselves against fear, to combat the dread of death within themselves; they moved spasmodically on through life and had no belief in a tomorrow.
[...]
But although it is easy to fit any given segment of the past neatly and intelligibly into the patterns of world history, contemporaries are never able to see their own place in the patterns."

I've just discovered this emo-bashing stuff today, and I'm quite horrified by all the terrible comments I can read on this page...
Are we really into a harcore forum?
I'm not familiar with Brooklyn Vegan website, and it's actually the first time I'm here... But if this is hardcore, please put me aside, cause I fucking don't want to be part of something like this...
To my opinion, Hardcore, Punk, Metalcore, Indie, and let's face it, even Emo (cause let's not forget that before being a fashion, emo is at first a subgenre of punk...)has nothing to do with sexism, homophobia, racism... and let's not be scared of words here.. most of your comments are full of fascist attitude : eradication of what is different, superiority of your point of view over different ones, power taken not by agreement but sheer fear...
That's fucking scary don't you thing?
If that's the kind of world you want to live in, then get rid of all your punk ideals and engage in an extreme right wing militia...
Reading all kind of agressive messages on this page, makes me wonder if this is real point of view or just "attitude" (like today it's hip to kick the shit out of emo guys, so let's write something cool like "hey let's kill those motherfuckers one by one...")
Plus I'm working right now on a fanzine about "what does the scene looks like in the world" (and this with no discrimination of music style : emo get along with metalcore and grind and pop punk too... why setting boundaries??? we are all there for the same stuff I guess...or at least I thought....) and I'd like to get in contact with someone who might enter a real debate about this question of emobashing in south america, and why does this find so many supporters...
If this is just for some stupid insults and threats I'm not interested (even if it might be funny, to read some of your great rhetoric!), but if you'd like to defend your point of view in a "normal" conversatiuon between people that disagrees, I'd love to hear about what you've got to say...
So yeah, if you emo-hater, has more than two sentences in your vocabulary, write me!
Andf just to finish, don't forget about this great sentence of wisdom by Rick Ta Life : "UNITY, UNITY, UNITY"...
This guy has understood everything!
(wow, I never thought that one day I would actually quote Rick Ta Life as a philosopher... life is full of surprises!)

from what I've read, it isn't other scene kids doing this to emo kids, it's conservative thugs.
Posted by Anonymous | March 28, 2008 7:06 AM
ok. let me give you some facts.
the video on top is shot in Mexico City, shot in the Insurgentes subway stop. This is the subway stop for the Zona rosa, which used to be the tacky gringo zone, but now is the country's main GAY neighborhood. It also serves the Colonia Roma, which is an artist / bohemian neighborhood.
The guys in the violent mob look to be working-class conservative thugs. The kids getting beat up, at least some of them, are obviously GAY.
So conservative thugs are beating up gay intellectual kids in Mexico?? What the fuck, you're happy about that????
Posted by Anonymous | March 28, 2008 7:15 AM
imagine if hick kids from upstate and ROTC kids and a sprinkling of metal heads and skinhead kids from New Jersey all came to 6th ave at 14th and beat up a bunch of young guys in Chelsea and in Washington Square.
put your petty scene irony and disdain for trendy people aside, this would be fucking fucked up!
it's just as fucked up when it happens in Mexico.

re: Anon 7:35am, honestly, stupid hick kids and jersey trash already hang out and pollute 6th ave at 14th anyway along with all the emo and hipster brats. if a genuine brawl were to occur in that neighborhood, I honestly think it would be hilarious because I sincerely want to puke everytime I walk in those areas over the way everything has changed over the years. I wish someone would beat the hell out of the NYU brats and emo posers that pollute Washington Square Park and Union Square.
Posted by ArmyofEmo | March 28, 2008 8:01 AM
but - these posers and spoiled brats are YOU.
you are a reader of a website called Brooklyn Vegan, which covers alternative and obscure, intellectual music.
those hicks would beat you up, are you actually blind enough to reality to not see that an ignorant, working class mob would hate you too?

I just checked my calendar to make sure the year is 2008. For those who think bashing an individual who is bold enough to express their interest in public - go ahead - join the crowd remain lame and non-interesting. Oh after you lol go home and read about it to secure your 15 minutes of fame. wow.
Posted by elizabeth | March 28, 2008 9:11 AM
this is about homophobia.
if these thugs think that any and all fashionable kids are queer, what makes you think they wouldn't think you indie rockers aren't queer as well?
I wouldn't go celebrating the persecution others if I were you. It has a way of coming back to bite you on the ass.

That sounds like every weekend I spent in the city between the ages of 14 and 21. I guess there's a new generation who thinks it would be completely fucked and unbelievable for violence to happen in New York City! Just wait until all the unemployed investment bankers are roaming the streets in gangs with baseball bats. You'll get that true New York experience you're after.
Posted by Anonymous | March 28, 2008 11:36 AM
when I was growing up... "emo" meant Fugazi, Quicksand, Jawbox, Polvo, Archers of Loaf, etc.
Posted by Anonymous | March 28, 2008 12:01 PM
Seriously, fuck all of you who sit behind there computer and have zero consideration for your fellow man.
Posted by Jeff | March 28, 2008 1:21 PM
The Loaf were NEVER considered emo. Emo was any hardcore band that played barefoot and/or wasn't amused when fights broke out in the pit. Also being from San Diego was a big clue. You had to have buddy holly glasses and a gas station jacket and write zines with way too much poetry. These new kids are fucking glam. Why the FUCK is that so hard for them to understand?
Posted by Anonymous | March 28, 2008 1:26 PM
i thought that was screamo, not emo (the bands you mentioned)

For those of you who don´t speak spanish:
The krishnas came out of the subway singing and everyone relaxed and went home. Very surreal! They just wanted to share some love!!

this is what people resort to in a country without juggalos
Posted by annonymous | March 28, 2008 2:53 PM
This is just like the Mods vs. the Rockers in the early 60's. Sub-culture riots. All that is needed is the Mexican Pete Townshend to write a rock opera about it.
Posted by Anonymous | March 28, 2008 3:19 PM
Why beat em' when you can kill em?
Posted by wdadw | March 28, 2008 3:56 PM
Who the fuck reads a blog named brooklynvegan? Ha ha ha. Who the fuck reads blogs? Mexicans, please beat up any and all bloggers! ! !

reading all these posts made me sad, but anon March 27, 2008 1:50 PM takes the prize:
"Ummm, anon 1:34, you gotta take BV with a grain of salt... realize we're all joking"
i'm sick to death of people hiding behind an "it's all just a joke" posture. not everyone posting these comments is joking, and you trying to smooth it all over with the most tired excuse in the world isn't helping anything. some of these posters are genuine advocates for physical violence against people who don't conform to what they'd like to see in people; and you are trying to gloss over that fact but saying that _they're_ just joking too. they're not.
physical violence in any case other than self-defense is unacceptable.
how is this still a controversial stance? what's wrong with our species that we can't even take this most basic of steps to preserve each other's physical safety?

You guys, I heard there was going to be a rally in Union Square this weekend protesting the bullying of Mexican Fallout Boy fans. Get your asses there. The Green Party of Brooklyn has already started plastering stickers for the event over every subway ad in the city. And don't forget to bring your pillows b/c there's going to be a sweet pillow fight in the Square afterwards. Oh my God, it's going to be so awesome. We're really going to send a message to those haters in Mexico.

Not surprising considering the brutal violence
Similar to the atrocities preceeding the Olympics of 1968 in Mexico City when hundreds of Mexican students occupying the National University were slaughtered in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, "Tlatelolco massacre."
To this day the Mexican Government has only admitted to 30 killings, but Amnesty International put the number at 500. CIA and FBI at 200-300.
Somehow authorities couldn't allow some long haired hippies to interrupt their Olympic festivites. This issue is being discussed at length in correspondence with the upcoming China Olympics.
Native Americans, Jews, Fags and Gypsies, Those Hippies had to go. Now these faggy Emo's.
You know there is something latently homo-phobic surrounding this emo discorse. So a dude mopes around like T.S. Eliot's "Prufrock" at a party. what doo you care? Unless you want to talk to him. You know what I'm saying.
The news reel looks like a poor excuse to touch an Emo kid.
And yeah Emo's are the new Metalhead of the Millenium. Remember them whiny Death Metal Assholes, Muahhhh! I'm not popular! I'm gonna read some Nietzsche and play D&D. And the Punks and Cowboys still play the Game of Queers and Steers in Downtown Austin. Masculinity- its just a mask anyway.

I'd pay to see this in Billyburg. Maybe stage at Galapagos? Or maybe a pay-per view event?
Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2008 4:24 PM
So I can see that on this board, talk is real cheap...
Like we say at home : big mouth-small dick...
No one even dared answering my message, yeah apparently it's a thousand time easier to talk about murder and violence in front of your computer than to confront your stupid homophobical racist ideas with someone else...
Does anyone has balls here, or are you just a bunch of tough guys posers???
Peace all around you, and it's not a hippy that's talking biatch!

wtf?!?! Are you ppl retarded? Is this a vegan website or a varsity frat house party?
I don't care for emo music and culture. I like hard metal and hardcore music. But cheering on conservative trash beating helpless kids? I hope some mob beats the crap out of you because of your choice of clothes or hair style. Fucking retarded. And don't give me this 'were being sarcastic' crap. I don't make fun of animal abuse, and I don't make fun of defenseless people being mobbed either. Violence is only cool when it is used for ethical reasons.
Posted by Animal | April 10, 2008 12:22 PM
wtf would someone beat emo kids, ur hurting em even more, you've never been through the bad things they've been through, so u hav no right to judge emo kids and beat them, fuck u all who hate emos! so freaken stop acting like bitches

Posted by LionelDark | May 5, 2008 10:35 PM
That is amazing.
There needs to be an international ban against emo and scene garbage, and anybody who partakes in anything emo/scene related is to be bludgeoned to death.
