Growing (opening for Boris) @ Knittng Factory, NYC - pics
photos by Zach Dilgard

Growing opened for Boris at Knitting Factory in NYC last night (March 4, 2008. A couple more pictures below....

Growing is a drone music/ambient music band formed in Olympia, Washington, and now currently based in Brooklyn, New York. The group was founded in 2001 by Kevin Doria (electric bass guitar), Joe Denardo (electric guitar), and Zack Carlson (drums). Carslon left following their first album, and the band has continued as a duo since then. They play slow, instrumental rock with elements of noise and ambient music.Their live shows are known for being very loud, playing straight through their set without break or pause; the bassist generally plays with his back to the audience, and the guitarist generally plays seated on a chair, much like members of kindred spirits Spacemen 3 did. They have released albums on labels such as Kranky, Animal Disguise, Archive, Megablade/Troubleman, and they are currently on The Social Registry.
As reported by The Social Registry, Growing have both a 7inch record and a full length schedule to debut at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. [wikipedia]

Growing is the best band in New York City, hands down.

This band sucks so hard. I was morbidly bored during their set, it was nothing. There was no content, just meandering, diatonic, purposeless tangents that were only held in any semblence of cohesiveness by a looped drum track. And even that was obnoxious.
Suffice to say, they made me unhappy.

I happen to think that Growing put on an excellent set. Much better than anticipated. Yeah...it's a bit unapproachable, especially if you aren't a fan of "noise"...
The set managed to combine hard metal, drone, and dance, all into one beautiful sonic landscape.
Keep it up Growing...I'll always buy a ticket.

I am a fan of noise, though the noise stuff I listen to is more on the actually noisy side, like the Wolf Eyes, Aids Wolf vein. (wolf?)
Growing made me think of extremely minimalist post-rock (which is already fairly minimalist, depending on your stance). I like post rock stuff a lot, but stuff like this takes the weaker aspects of it and glorifies them.
That being said I don't want to be a douche, I get that people have justifiable reasons for the music they like, but from where I am coming from, this band has no impact or much value at all. It's really hard to enjoy it.

Their set was too short. Like, 25 minutes or something. Definitely less than half an hour. I like what they do, and the last two releases have been pretty great, but it's kind of off-putting to see them play for such a short period time. They were scheduled for 8, with Boris set for 9:30, so it wasn't like they weren't given time. It just comes across as a little half-assed.

The longest i've seen growing play , was about 45 mins opening for mogwai back in 2006 .
Besides that, the rest of the shows are roughly 25 mins . Which i can't understand , its not like playing drone makes ya tired or something..
