I would be more excited about this if I didn't already have the new album for over a week.

It's a beautiful album, I like it a lot.

I would be more excited about this if I didn't wait ten years for a new Portishead album and then finally hear it, and find it extremely boring.

P.S. - The end of the song sounds like it is trying to find Sarah Connor.

This is not the finest track on the new disc. Strange choice for a first single!

um, blue monday?

this is great - and those who have it already - keep downloading music illegally. You see what happens - don't come crying when you get crap.

man, i guess opinions vary... but i think this album is brilliant. like possibly better than either of their old ones brilliant. like i'm-so-glad-they-waited-10-years-so their-music-could-evolve-to-another-level brilliant.
that's just me though.

this shit is tight - a welcomed return.

There's something about Beth's voice that makes everything she's involved in good. I like it. A lot.

i like it. it's different. but prefer the groovier, trip hop beats of old.

agreed that the new album is amazing and their sound is updated. even throwing in a krautsong for good measure. and the whole thing isn't typical moody, like this song is, portishead.

A nice article on the new album I just found for those interested.

"beat is annoying after about 20 seconds"
at 10 secs i started to cringe..
horrid garbage

yeah, that's not very good. but they are the type of band to release a punishing song first, so maybe the rest is on point.

I was a skeptic, but this track sounds better every time I hear it. The keys at the end just kill me.
Would looooove some NYC dates soon.

anyone who says the beat is annoying or whatever - is a stupid retard with zero musical taste.
That is a fact.

This decade of this 3rd Millenium has been regurgitation/remakes/revivals/and American Idol.. THE BEATS in this song are NORMAL. There are going to be a lot of people at first who can't *get it*. Try listening to Diamanda Galas'(who also has a new album coming out) Shrei X/27, and see if you still think the beats are harsh. If you can't handle it then stay in front of your tv (modern god) and enjoy your trivial crap =)

Yeah - anyone who doesn't like Portishead - needs to rethink their priorities.
Machine gun is a great song in a sea of crap these days.
It is NOT annoying or stupid or horrid garbage (anon 7:59), maybe not up to your fave, Britney Spears' output, but you know, they try...
idiot.

it's got an obnoxious drum loop that masks an otherwise good song. or, at least, i think it would otherwise be a good song - as hard as i try i can't listen "past" that drum loop to concentrate on the other stuff for longer than a brief second or two.

if you replaces the singing with a mumbling dude, you'd have an excepter song.
Posted by Anonymous | March 20, 2008 3:25 PM
It's called Machine Gun you friggin' dumbasses. It's supposed to be monotonous. It's supposed to be jarring and grating. That beat is very much on purpose. And it's NOT an odd choice! They're known for sloooooooow beats. So after ten years, they come back with a song that is recognizably Portishead, but makes use of some new ideas and sounds. And 12:16, I've waited ten years for this album, Dummy and Portishead still sound fresh and amazing after all this time, but you're over Third after listening to a piece of shit leaked copy for a whole WEEK now? How fucking cute and clever for you to find a leaked file that anyone could have in ten seconds, we're all very impressed. Eat shit.
