NIN Rainbows

Promoters won't make the lineup official for a few more weeks, but industry sources have confirmed that Radiohead has been booked as the centerpiece of the festival. The British quintet still raves about the experience they had in 2001 when they headlined a rare outdoor show at Hutchinson Field, on the South end of Grant Park. The band is expected to perform at the same location this year.

In addition, Nine Inch Nails will play its first Chicago show in several years, following the release of its 2007 album, "Year Zero," and the four-volume "Ghosts," made available a few days ago on the nin.com Web site. [Chicago Tribune]

Lollapalooza happens August 1-3, 2008 in Chicago's Grand Park. (thx Hiro)

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 3:25 PM

the lolla boards seem to think foo fighters

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 3:57 PM

The organizers are trying three big headliners instead of one big and four medium acts headlining, and the third headliner is Smashing Pumpkins. Other acts include Wilco, Bloc Party, Slightly Stoopid, Gogol Bordello, M.I.A., Cake, MGMT, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, CSS, Metric, Kings of Leon, Gnarls Barkley, Underworld, Justice, Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend, Satellite Party.

Posted by Monklish | March 7, 2008 4:02 PM

wow APW is freakin terrible for a first concert...oh yea they are really planning on a 2009 APW (sarcasm)...its pathetic, i really wish Lollapalooza was in NYC and not Chicago

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:04 PM

Third headliner = Beethoven?

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:05 PM

Smashing Pumpkins at Lollapalooza '95 (or '94?) were great. What was Billy yelling at that guy with the Knicks jersey? I never found out the whole story.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:08 PM

Field Day Fest was better than APW

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:09 PM

i'll take the smashing pumpkins for another headliner.

but, i was hoping for this.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:14 PM

are you sure you really weren't hoping for a laugh?

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:20 PM

94, it was the worst show ever.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:20 PM

third headliner will be either Britney or Hannah Montana

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:29 PM

"94, it was the worst show ever."

Are you crazy? The Randalls Island one?

What made it terrible was the rain. Nick Cave's set was cancelled. It went from being 94 degrees to 70. 1 hour line to grab a coffee, and I missed all of George Clinton's set. But I still had fun. When Tre Cool ran out on stage with his dyed hair and yelled out into the crowd, you knew it was going to be good. Too bad I missed all of the second stage. Back then, with no Internet, you didn't know who the cool acts were.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:34 PM

I would really love The Pumpkins to be the 3rd headliner. Say what you will about James and D'Arcy (or even Melissa) no longer being in the band but this new line-up is still awesome.

Posted by J | March 7, 2008 4:38 PM

saw the new lineup last year at V Fest and was not impressed -- would rather see wilco or STP...

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:40 PM

What about Gang Of Four?

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:43 PM

How about Gwar for friday night

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:47 PM

It's going to be a dark horse; something completely out of left field. I am predicting (in order of likelihood): Rage, Jay Z, or the Eagles.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:49 PM

portishead

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:52 PM

GoF barely filled up Irving Plaza. Not enough for a headliner. It would be great if they played though.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:53 PM

not as a headliner -- but i would love to see X there.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 4:56 PM

Radiohead's tour dates page clearly shows them booked for Friday night.

Posted by jason | March 7, 2008 4:58 PM

#1 Radiohead
#2 Salt & Pepper
#3 NIN

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 5:00 PM

5:00 PM is clearly 4:14 PM. still hoping?

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 5:02 PM

starship

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 5:03 PM

It's going to be The Cult or Bauhaus.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 5:13 PM

hall and oates!

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 5:30 PM

Bauhaus would be great. I thought I read somewhere they weren't gonna tour for their new album though. I hope that was just a bad dream.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 6:25 PM

A whole festival of people trying to dance to music that you can't dance to.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 6:35 PM

what a bunch of whiners. move to chicago !

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 6:59 PM

Trent and Thom should duet yo.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 7:57 PM

NIN & Radiohead-I can get jiggy with that. But Chicago is too far away to take the train to.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 8:02 PM

Why are bands like Radiohead & the Pumpkins only playing festivals over here?I remember a time when these bands played the MSG arena.Even the location of the REM show is still tba in nyc. That might end up some festival too.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 8:24 PM

8:02 -- the plane from chicago will get back to the city before you even make the front of the line for the ill conceived ferry service back to manhattan...

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 8:32 PM

Third (or second, depending on how you count) headliner: Barack "'n' Roll" Obama

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 8:52 PM

Underworld will be opening all the American Radiohead gigs in August. The opener for the May gigs is Jarvis Cocker. Heard it here first, kids.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 10:58 PM

I heard it's going to be Seona Dancing

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2008 11:20 PM

jack johnson is the jimmy buffett of now.

Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2008 3:44 AM

good analogy. I hate jimmy buffet. If you meet someone under the age of 30 who likes jimmy buffet run away. Trust me.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 8:22 AM

The Smiths were just announced as Saturday's headliner!

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 11:26 AM

^^This is a joke right? Please substantiate your source. I seriously doubt The Smiths are reuniting.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 11:49 AM

yeah, i'm waiting for confirmation of that Beethoven claim... i seriously doubt he's playing too.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 12:56 PM

11:49, I heard The Smiths leak on BBC Radio no more than an hour ago. They did not say anything, however, about Beethoven.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 5:54 PM

I heard the third is going to be Heath Ledger doing an all acoustic set.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:25 PM

spitzer and snoop are teaming up for the third spot...

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:50 PM

La bouche is headlining all three nights
