Siren Festival is on - same weekend as the Pitchfork Festival
Tickets are on sale for the three-day (July 18, 19 & 20) Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this summer. Public Enemy will be performing "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" in its entirety on the first night. Animal Collective, !!!, Vampire Weekend, Dizzee Rascal, No Age, Atlas Sound, Fleet Foxes, Spiritualized, M. Ward, Boris, Extra Golden, El Guincho and The Ruby Suns are confirmed so far to play the other two days.
That same weekend in Brooklyn, NY: the 2008 Village Voice Siren Festival in Coney Island - Saturday July 19th to be exact, and it could be the last one ever (which is what everyone also thought about last year's)

As long as it's not during Lollapalooza. I have a feeling the lineup might be great.
PF looks, but not tempting enough to make the trek to Chicago.

Any word on the lineup?

Eh, this should have died last year. Who's idea was it to do this again.
Now with it on the same weekend as PF, it's going to really blow.

"Any word on the lineup?"
It's only March! They won't make an announcement until May, and even then it will be a partial lineup.

I can't understand why the Yeah Yeah Yeah's wouldn't do Siren Fest this year.
They've been tucked away writing a record, have a slew of new songs...it's a free show...in Brooklyn...lots of press...huge opportunity to put some wind in their sails.

Who is playin McCarren Pool? Are they doing free sunday shows?

"It's only March! They won't make an announcement until May, and even then it will be a partial lineup."
Well, Pitch4k has already announced a lineup for the same weekend. It wouldn't be a terrible thing for Siren to announce a couple of the headliners.

re: 1127, you forget that P4k has to sell tickets.

"Well, Pitch4k has already announced a lineup for the same weekend. It wouldn't be a terrible thing for Siren to announce a couple of the headliners."
They have never done it in the past, why start now? They don't need to announce headliners since there are no tickets to sell.
The main question is: will Ruby's be open? People need something to do during boring sets!

I watched the Duke Spirit get crushed Saturday. What what ya'll!!!
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 11:32 AM
just say hell no. last year's was terrible! way too many people in an awful setup. they may get good acts, but how can you enjoy it when you can barely hear anything and the sound is overpowered by the friggin bumper cars?

Guided by motherfucking Voices
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 11:40 AM
i second that...the small stage (black lips, matt & kim, etc.) was great, but the headliner stage was absurd...it felt like i was 10 miles from mia and could barely hear anything
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 11:42 AM
I don't see why people are complaining. it is a free festival. if you don't want to be really far from the stage get there early. while MIA's set was kinda shitty, i still had a really good day chilling with friends there. elvis perkins was really good as were black lips.

Ruby's will be open this year!

I heard that there weren't gonna be any bands at Siren this year. Instead, it's just going to be a massive pillow fight at Coney Island. And you have to take your pants off during the subway ride over there. It's going to be the coolest thing since Daft Punk. All the kids will be blogging about it during their summer vacation.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs played siren years ago...
Hey don't hate the Siren. It has been going on long before McCarren and you were the twinkle in someone's eyes.
They have had some really great bands play there and for free.
It is not summer for me without my trip to Coney Island to stand hours on the hot pavement along the dirty boardwalk, listening to the death rattle of the cyclone compete with sound system and drinking those sicky sweet drinks in the long glasses while indulging in cheese fries at Nathan's.
It is a New York institution that is soon to go the way of Coney Island High, CBGB's, Brownies....

how can anyone hate on siren? over the years they've offered, FREE OF CHARGE, Guided by Voices, Superchunk, TV on the Radio, YYY's, Spoon, Death Cab, Trail of Dead, Thermals, Dirtbombs, Fiery Furnaces, !!!, the list goes on and on and on ... they've never repeated a band ...
Posted by Eli | March 24, 2008 12:49 PM
^^^you're forgetting Q AND NOT U....probably the best band to ever play siren.

Who are you trying to shit? People just go to Siren to drink 40s in the sun and pick up teenage girls from Canarsie.

i blasted the nastiest fart on the girl behind me a few years ago at Siren

even if there is one band you actually like, there's always a good selection of bands that you can start hating on the spot.

well i mean. pitchfork is always better. siren is free and has a mile long v.i.p section, no water, and death hiding behind every corner.
Posted by Mandy | March 24, 2008 10:05 PM
everyone should just go to siren because it's free and chockfullomemories good or bad, everyone always has some story to tell after Siren. That being said if you live in new york go to siren because it's highly likely all those acts will play nyc before or after pitchfork fest. so was the case last year.

I thought there weren't going to be any McCarren Park Pool shows because they were making it luxury condos and shit...

Even when the Siren is bad, it's good!? You just have to man up to make it through the sun. I've seen every band four years in a row and the highlights were many - Trail of Dead, Elvis Perkins, NY Dolls. Don't hate on the fest.
