Steely DanSteely Dan

many would argue that Steely Dan never wrote a real love song. However, some of the demo-era recordings show Fagen and Becker at their most romantic. Such songs include "This Seat's Been Taken", "Oh, Wow, It's You", "Come Back Baby", and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". Other themes are also present, such as prejudice, aging, failure, poverty and middle-class ennui, but these are typically seen from an ironic and detached perspective. Many of their songs concern love, but none can be classed as straightforward love songs, since there is inevitably an ironic or disturbing twist in the lyrics. One may think the song is about love on first inspection, however, upon deeper analysis the listener realizes that the real story is about rape, prostitution, incest, or some other socially unacceptable subject. "Countdown" is a great album; check out "King of the World".

Too bad Skunk Baxter doesn't tour w/ them now. Busy with the CIA, probably.

I have nothing but respect for their records. That said, they put on easily one of the most vanilla, phoned-in shows I've been to.

Yeah looking for a Steely Dan on stage time. I've got a real job and sh*t and can't fuss around with no openers.

CD101.9 jazz band opener. Dan went on around 8:45 last night and played for about 2 hours. Great set list, played really tight and a lot of energy. Older crowd - was expected (at 32 I was one of the youngest). A few Q104.3 faves (My Old School, Peg, Hey 19) and some nice deeper cuts (Babylon Sisters, Gaucho, New Frontier, I Got the News, Show Biz Kids, Black Friday, really heavy on The Royal Scam album - instrumental Fez, The Royal Scam, Kid Charlemagne, Green Earrings, Everything you Did). Love the Beacon.
