Eschewing their own tradition of booking hip hop acts for spring, Columbia Concerts has booked awesome Brooklyn-based indie rockers Grizzly Bear and awesome Brooklyn-based indie rockers The National for this year's Spring Concert. The photos in this post are from the show The National played at NYU at the end of February with Phosphorescent. More below.....An anonymous source also informs Bwog that this year's Spring Concert will also differ from last year's because it's going to be indoors and tickets are going to cost a completely reasonable and completely worth it $5 fee (students only). Why are the National supporting neighborhood destroying institutions like NYU and Columbia?
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:07 PM
Because the "school of hard knocks" doesn't pay that well
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:20 PM
ok i was at this show - and in person, it did NOT look that cool. Unless you think overly-lit homecoming dances look cool. That's like some sort of magic fantasy camera that makes lame things look incredibly awesome.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:24 PM
^^i go to shows that look cool.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:31 PM
Or a very talented photographer. Go and take a look at some of Bao's other work. I'm sure he has nice equipment, but the man has a lot of talent.
Posted by nyctaper | March 24, 2008 3:32 PM
Thanks for the kind words, nyctaper.
I traded my two magic beans for that camera so it better make lame things look incredible.

maybe things look different from the other side of the stage?
here's my take on it:

Anyone with a digital camera and license to get up close can take those pictures. Don't want to be a hater, but there is not much to it.

I seriously hate NYU and all the fake rich hipster wannabe's that go there. screw them. I can understand the National wanting to reach a larger audience, but in this instance they officially sold out, even though their music is great.
Posted by Death2NYU | March 24, 2008 3:47 PM
^^ you are a moron.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:49 PM
yes anyone who goes to college is a trust fund neighborhood destroying hipster wannabe. uhhhh
go back to your hole dipshit, and think of some more baseless overgeneralized dipshit comments.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:55 PM
Whoa didn't know that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mohamed ElBaradei was a fake rich hipster wannabe.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 3:57 PM
The National "sold out"?
They played a cheap show for ostensibly poor college kids. If you went to college you might have had that opportunity as well.
NYU kids got to see two great bands (nat'l + phosphorescent) for a five bucks. Cheers to them. I wish I had been able to get a ticket...

"I can understand the National wanting to reach a larger audience, but in this instance they officially sold out, even though their music is great."
So charging 5 bucks for a show at a non-profit educational institution is selling out?
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 4:00 PM
Screw other people. Listen to music because you and only you like it. F*ck the haters who think every band sold out. Death2NYU just hates NYU cause he or she didnt get in, and hates the National cause he or she found out about them too late.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 4:11 PM
for the love of god focus that cam pls, k thanks!
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 4:29 PM
i love that Matt has the first couple of words from the lyrics of every song on the set list...will he need a teleprompter in a few years?
Posted by butternuts | March 24, 2008 4:36 PM
all the people pissed off by my earlier comments are just defensive because they feel guilty about their trust-fund, neighborhood destroying, $40k educational experience at an absolutely shite school that seriously destroyed the East Village and many other neighborhoods. The National are great regardless of the show.
Posted by Death2NYU | March 24, 2008 4:40 PM
am i the only person on the planet that doesn't like the national?
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 4:40 PM
I can't get over their name, which seems to indicate a sort of grandiose blandness.
And don't you mean Grizzly?
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 5:05 PM
Death2NYU, not everyone in NYU is a trust fund baby. Get over yourself. The school gives out a lot of finical aid and helps a lot of underrepresented minorities. They have helped give a substantial amount of money, revenue, and highly qualified educated graduates back to a struggling neighborhood. If you think NYU is solely responsible for the demise of the Easy Village, then you are highly misinformed and frankly, miseducated.
OH and I did not attend or am I affiliated with NYU
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 5:28 PM
Oh, one other thing, Death2NYU, I would love to see what your beef with Bellevue hospital and the plethora of other Medical Centers that NYU has in lower income communities. And how NTU has helped give medical care to countless number of people in need of medical care.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 5:31 PM
I don't know, I saw them play at Florida State last September and it was pretty good. and lord knows we're not rich kids.

"i love that Matt has the first couple of words from the lyrics of every song on the set list...will he need a teleprompter in a few years?"
I found that he had the lyrics on there funny too. perhaps he gets nervous?
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 5:36 PM
@ CU Concerts...Does this mean this show is also opened to the public?
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 5:46 PM
oh yea nyu totally ruined williamsburg too, right?
what a joke

Tickets for all Columbia student events are sold online through ovationtix, linked from the CUarts.com website. I'd keep checking that for ticketing information.
Also, the annual WBAR Barnard College Radio outdoor end-of-semester show is that Friday (4/25). The bands that I've heard tossed around aren't terribly inspiring yet, but it's usually a fun show and it'll likely get a write-up on here.
Posted by columbia student | March 24, 2008 6:40 PM
NYU is an effing joke. anyone who defends it is a freaking yuppie suburban moron who probably grew up in Jersey.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 7:42 PM
growing up in jersey was amazing.
Posted by Anonymous | March 24, 2008 8:09 PM
youre all idiots

"I can understand the National wanting to reach a larger audience, but in this instance they officially sold out, even though their music is great."
tons of bands play the college circuit when they're on a break from tour. it's ridiculously easy money and the kids appreciate it. the bands are probably making more money from a one-off college show than an average night on tour so why complain?
Posted by jason | March 24, 2008 9:46 PM
i know someone at my college who books shows and bands demand so much money for college shows:
spoon= 25 G
Of Monreal=40 G
cold war kids=25G
Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2008 1:12 AM
@anon112. That's a very far stretch. Spoon asked for only 7500. And Cold War Kids was 2500 (both were in 07)
Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2008 2:06 AM
the only thing i would pay the cold war kids 25g for would be to never play a single note again.
and believe me, the offer is real, i have the dough, I go to NYU.
Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2008 4:56 AM
wish my school booked bands that were good :[

Death2NYU is clearly deficient, that much is given, but his most egregious and baseless statement was "The National are great regardless of the show."
That is simply not true. Part of my college education consisted in honing the ability to discern fuckin' rad musical acts from bland prissy pseudo rock n roll.
the national are like interpol minus the complete mastery of their schtick, which was what made interpol likable in the first place.
super blah.
