the Rutles or sort of the Rutles or just a tribute....?
a poster in NYC, March 23, 2008

I'm pretty sure that poster says "The Rutles" are playing in NYC on March 26, 27, 28 and 29, BUT that does not seem to be the case or something.

I think it is a Beatles tribute band (The Fab Four) playing the songs of The Rutles, with appearances by a few of the band members, along with clips of the films and shit.

I got caught up in this mess. I think the commentors in the original post had it right. It was originally represented as the Rutles band from the movie; after people bought tickets they changed the description to Rutlemania. I was one of the disappointed folks who felt misled, and I pushed hard to get TicketMaster to refund my tickets, I just got stuck with the processing fee. Definitely a case of caveat emptor.

That explains why I heard some Rutles on WNYU last night. I'm no longer that confused.

forget The Fab Four, check out The Fab Faux. The best Beatles cover band you'll ever see.

i went. it's pretty much just the movie semi-adapted for the stage (most of the dialogue is old footage projected onto a screen) with the tribute band playing songs. no actual rutles appear onstage, though eric idle was in the audience. i'm not entirely sure what the point of the whole thing is...
