UPDATE: Read the comments. There is some confusion as to whether this is really the Rutles or not.

by Klaus Kinski

The Rutles

Back when I was in college, my best friend there and I watched the 1978 Rutles mockumentary "All You Need is Cash" several times a week for several months. It became such a dangerously nerdly obsession that our priorities (namely our education) almost completely fell by the wayside. In addition to the core group consisting of Dirk (Eric Idle), Nasty (Neil Innes), Stig (Ricky Fataar), and Barry (John Halsey), the film is loaded with so many incredible cameos, classic lines, and oddball characters that to this day it ranks in my top favorite movies of all time.

Never in a million years did I think the Rutles would get together for a live gig in my lifetime, but in honor of their 30th anniversary, they are. On March 17th at 7:30pm and 10:30pm they'll be in LA at Grauman's Egyptian Theater as part of the Mods and Rockers Film Festival where there will be a screening of "All You Need Is Cash", screenings of rarities from the Rutles archives, a Q&A with the band, as well as musical surprises. On March 15, 16, 19, 20, 21 they'll be performing at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in southern California (TIX are on sale).

Then it's off to NYC for a 4 night residency at the Blender Theater from March 26th thru March 29th. Tickets went on sale today. Get em while they're hot. Videos and flyers below....

I love the "modestly present" on the poster.

Posted by bmh | March 11, 2008 3:44 PM

wait it doesn't seem like they're actually playing. it says a tribute to them...

Posted by layne | March 11, 2008 4:03 PM

It's a tribute to Rutlemania featuring the Rutles. They will be there. All 4 of them. For sure.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2008 4:06 PM

is eric idle going to be in nyc?

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2008 4:28 PM

Was funny 30 years ago. Will it be so now?

Posted by drewo | March 11, 2008 5:10 PM

I love the Rutles!!

I really hope this lives up to its potential.

Posted by Rutlemania fan | March 11, 2008 5:48 PM

Live shows, huh? I guess Barry's dream of being a hairdresser or two didn't work out.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2008 8:11 PM

someone doing covers of the rutles. that would be postmodern.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 1:56 AM

I've never gotten into the Rutles. Why start now?

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 9:41 AM

Why get into the Rutles? Look, I can understand if you're tired of the hype, of having to hear the Rutles ad nauseum on classic rock stations and muzak (or, God forbid, Stig's solo material), of having every baby boomer jam it down your throat that they were the greatest thing ever, but "Rutlemania" aside, the massive contribution they made to pop music and pop culture (who doesn't love the "Yellow Submarine Sandwich" movie?) cannot be denied, and for that reason alone I think you should check them out.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 1:50 PM

It was because of the Ruttles that I got hooked on tea..

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 1:59 PM

FYI, Beatle reaction to the Rutles: 1) Ringo - unknown; 2) George - (of course) loved the deflation of Beatles mythology; 3) Paul - greeted Eric Idle icily after Rutlemania; 4) John - fascination.

Posted by Steven | March 12, 2008 2:12 PM

paul was always the square of the bunch. also a fucking genius, of course.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 4:17 PM

Impossible. Stig is dead! And I heard a rumor that Barry is also dead.

Posted by cortez | March 12, 2008 5:15 PM

I'm sure they'll be shocked to learn that. There they probably are, sipping some tea, enjoying the afternoon, with no idea they're dead.

Posted by bmh | March 12, 2008 5:37 PM

will eric idle be there or not?

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 6:29 PM

Eric Idle WILL be there. That is a promise, a guarantee, a sure thing.

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 8:13 PM

Maybe Eric Idle will be there, but not the other three. And if Eric Idle IS there, he certainly won't be performing as Dirk.

This show is NOT THE RUTLES. Look very carefully at the psoter It is a tribute concert by another band. It is being presented by the originators of the Rutles, but this show DOES NOT FEATURE THE ORIGINAL RUTLES PERFORMING.

Brooklyn Vegan: You should change this header. It is misleading.

Anon 11:38 might be right. Ticketmaster and Live Nation have these shows billed simply as "The Rutles". Most people would assume that since the event is billed as The Rutles it would be a Rutles show and not a tribute. However, I read the press release and it does appear to be a Tribute / Musical type thing. I already bought my ticket thinking it was a Rutles show and TM does not offer refunds. I am pretty livid

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 2:05 PM

Anon 2?05:

If this was misrepresented, you can probably get your money back. Also, just because Ticketmaster states that there are no refunds as their policy, it does not mean that you can't get a refund. I have gotten refunds from Ticketmaster on tickets for many reasons. Ask to speak to a supervisor. If all else fails, if you paid by credit card, you can not pay and dispute it. If you give the reasons that are clear, you will probably win.

Already happened. 18 years ago, in fact:

a funny tribute band doing covers of a band who did funny tribute to another band??

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 2:57 PM

kinda cancels itself out doesn't it?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 4:03 PM

from pythononline.com

The semi-spectacular tribute concert starring The Fab Four as The Pre-Fab Four (Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry) in a brand new all-singing, all-dancing, all-laughing, all-jumping up and down, musical extravaganza (tea included) based on The Music, The Movies And the Lives of The Fabulous Rutles.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 4:12 PM

The Fab Four are actually a real Beatles tribute band.

They will be playing the parts of the Rutles.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 4:45 PM

good to know they can still get work.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 5:25 PM

yes BV, you should update this entry. The photo of Neil Innes, Ricki Fattar and John Halsley and the text about them playing these shows is MISLEADING. The Rutles are not part of this show.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 5:49 PM

No, not Eric Idle, Neil Innes, Ricki fataar and John Halsey,

but

Ron McNeil, Ardy Sarraf, Michael Amador, and Rolo Sandova
(whoever they are)

I also got suckered into buying tickets thinking this was the Rutles and I'm also pretty livid. I just checked the ad as it first appeared and it said starring the Rutles. Now they've changed it to starring the Fab Four. Ticketmster doesn't give refunds so we're stuck with $55 tix for a tribute band. Don't waste your money like I did!

Posted by Anonymous | March 15, 2008 10:44 AM

I just got Ticketmaster to give me a refund! Never mind that their policy says no refunds, they WILL give you one if you call customer service and explain that this was a blatant case of false advertising. In New York the number is 212-307-7171.

I saw the rutlemania show in LA two nights in a row. They are amazing. You will not be disappointed! Every Rutle's fan needs to check this show out...

Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2008 5:19 PM

All four original Rutles introduced the show the nights I went (in Hollywood) at the Ricardo Montalban Theater. Pretty exciting!

Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2008 5:27 PM

Who besides me thinks the above two comments are plants by staff from the show?

Posted by hipster replacement | March 19, 2008 7:36 AM

HAHA!! Nope, I'm not a staff member. Although, I wouldn't mind being one of their dancers =) I'm just a fan who thought the show was brilliant!

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2008 5:16 PM

I'm not affiliated with the production in any way and attended the Sunday show in LA. I can confirm that Eric Idle introduced the original members & narrated the performance. The Fab Four are well known in LA -- I'm guessing, by this thread, they don't have a fan base in NYC -- and they do a good job performing as The Rutles.

Neil & John were pretty accessible, too. The friend I went with is a huge fan and saw them hanging out in the lobby & had a chance to speak with them.

Posted by Tracey | March 19, 2008 5:45 PM

I love this! People livid because it's not the "actual Rutles" performing!! That's the funniest thing I've ever heard. Looks like Eric and company pulled it off. Obviously, they intended on making it obscure. Real fans of The Rutles could figure it out or just go. ITS ALL A JOKE PEOPLE. It's a live show featuring Rutles music. It's definitely the Rutles. But the Rutles never really were The Rutles. IT'S ALL A JOKE. See?

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2008 3:47 PM

If you go to the official Monty Python web site you can see for yourself that this is a real show produced and sanctioned by the "actual Rutles". Those who went and got their money back made a mistake. I'm a 30 year Python fan and I got the joke right away and I am excited to see one of The Blender Theater shows.

forget The Fab Four, check out The Fab Faux. The best Beatles cover band you'll ever see.

I too was expecting to see the real "The Rutles" perform or maybe just stand on the Blender stage faking it by doing rhythmic toe-tapping. And I too was miffed when it was brought to my attention that it wasn't really going to turn out that way. However, after hyper-ventilating and cursing like a drunken sailor I remembered that my son had seen The Fab Four and he had said that they were definitely "KICK-ASS" and a great Beatles tribute band worth eyeballing. So now I'm thinking that I can't wait to check out this extravaganza to honor The Rutles Anniversary on Saturday night. It's a nice pre-April fools way t'play wouldn't ya say...? - "be there, or be square, man!"

Posted by Ooznozz | March 27, 2008 3:18 PM

The Fab Four doing Rutlemania was amazing! I had to go 2 days in a row, I couldn't get enough!

Posted by Rebecca | March 30, 2008 12:48 AM

To Anonymous - Post March 21, 2008 3:47 pm - False advertising and scamming people out of $50+ dollars for a tribute band is NOT a joke!

Posted by Liz | March 31, 2008 3:38 PM

I went to Saturday's show, it was AMAZING! Very glad I went and sorry that I didn't go two days. I payed $45 at the door(at the Blender theater) and sat in the third row. If you are using Ticketmaster, you were getting robbed from the start.

Posted by JD5173 | April 3, 2008 9:29 AM

So...did anybody else go to the show in New York? I would love to hear some more reviews!

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2008 2:12 AM

They weren't there, and tribute band was crappy.
