First! Plus, I have no reason to hate on this band as I'm not caught up in the blog wars on them but after seeing their SNL performance, I truly don't get them. I'm just not into their songwriting and they come off as the antithesis of rock. I mean they make Bishop Allen look like GG Allin for goodness sakes.

i really like vampire weekend and thought they were great live....that being said i think their other late night performance (was it conan? letterman?) was much better than these. i doubt that it's their fault but just the setup. it's really hard to do a tv performance.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 10:43 AM

Anon 10:41 I'm the first commentor. I had to look up on Wikepedia who Alec Ounsworth even is. FYI, I'm definitely not him and I'm no huge fan of CYHSY either.

I really love Vampire Weekend and I really think anyone who doesn't believe that they deserve their big break needs to read their Spin interview.

http://spin.com/articles/vampire-weekend-graduates

They've worked really hard for everything that they have and good for them for being successful.

Also, I love M79
=)

oh, and I agree with anon 10:43, it just seemed like they were a bit off on this performance.

"They composed and performed verbally dexterous songs with titles like "Pizza Party" and "Interracial Dating" (which reflected on finding long black hairs in the shower), and co-opted the Lacoste alligator as their official mascot."

that's about as far as i needed to read in that spin article.

haha exactly. vampire weekend = crapcrapCRAP. and i, for one, am not buying into it.

no one would give two shits about VW if they weren't on matador.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 12:06 PM

they're not on matador, asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 12:25 PM

who the fuck decorates their apartment with beer advertising mirrors? seriously, i think that's pretty indicative of the type of draw vampire weekend will get at their shows: safe and MOR. no thanks, i'll stick with the ditch.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 12:38 PM

Anyone remember me?

Hell, we were a boring safe bland pop band and VW make us look like Burzum.

Posted by Nick Heyward | March 9, 2008 12:49 PM

Haircut 100 were actually exciting for a while there. VW would be fortunate to achieve a similar success.

Posted by drewo | March 9, 2008 12:58 PM

Vampire Weekend is a sad excuse for indie rock, but I'm not really hating on them. They aren't too pretentious.

Posted by Narayan | March 9, 2008 1:13 PM

People are so quick to say "This is crap" when it comes to Vampire Weekend because they want to think they're cooler than Pitchfork and like to think they have an independent mind.

Vampire Weekend maybe don't deserve mega hype but MOST BANDS DON'T. I just think their music is catchy, and at times I wanna listen to it.

"why so much backlash? eight months ago, VW were the bees knees and now that they are all over the place they are suddenly bad? music's the same."

you obviously weren't paying attention. the backlash on this band began eight months ago too.

I have tried really hard to be objective with this band. I dont want to buy into something just because of the hype (and I dont want to hate it for the same reason). I listened to their album and I saw the SNL thing last night. (I still haven't seen them live in person though. Are they particularly great live?) I simply don't get it. The songs are bland and wimpy. It's the most "vanilla" rock band I've heard in a while - nothing edgy or memorable about it. And I'm even more shocked by the fact that they've gotten to this point - I thought people would be really turned off by the "safeness" of the music and their whole v-neck preppy thing they have going on. I must be missing something! I've honestly tried to listen for anything exciting/memorable in the music and I simply can't find it.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 2:17 PM

The Strokes were/still are extremely safe when they got massively hyped, but these guys make them look like fucking Napalm Death.

Posted by J | March 9, 2008 2:32 PM

I liked their interview...I suppose somewhere in all this hype is a group of cool guys that are riding the waves of success that is practically been given to them. But with that said, their music is a bit too safe and a bit too easy.....I can see why labels, booking agents, etc, were drooling to get a hold of these guys, they will sell records and they will make money for the hungry music industry folks who are just fighting to sustain themselves. What these blogs are doing is just throwing bits of crumbs of some what okay bands for the industry folks to jump on the "hype band wagon" and try to make a few bucks, before the hype dies out.

Unfortunately, even good guys become a circumnstance of this circus, and this maybe the case with Vampire Weekend.

Posted by Vampire Who? | March 9, 2008 2:39 PM

cute young guys that write catchy pop melodies and make eyes for the camera get famous. what's new about that? why all the hate? why is everyone so confused?

why expect more?

Posted by eric | March 9, 2008 3:05 PM

It has now become glaringly obvious that the only reason why people dislike this band - that produces sunny, inoffensive pop music - so much is because they're 4 preppy rich kids who went to Columbia.

And hating this band for that reason makes you the biggest poseur of all.

Posted by Jesus H. Christ | March 9, 2008 3:10 PM

They really are a little to safe, and A-Punk sounds like a ska- punk song. That really turns me off.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 3:14 PM

I'm just glad people are smart enough on this blog to realize, that even if they like the band, their performance on snl last night was pretty lackluster.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 3:14 PM

Compare to The Strokes tv appearance off their first album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps6pOginTok

VW makes them look like fucking Napalm Death indeed.

Posted by Jp | March 9, 2008 3:50 PM

Does anyone remember laughter? Does anyone remember when people actually liked music?

Posted by uber1 | March 9, 2008 3:54 PM

I'm not a huge Strokes fan, but at least that performance from letterman shows that they have a little edge compared to VW. There is nothing interesting about VW - not their music, their appearance, their show, their background, their ability, anything.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 4:01 PM

The Strokes comparisons are so funny, yet entirely apt, since both bands are comprised of rich kids.

The only difference is that while The Strokes are hipster poseurs, Vampire Weekend have always dressed preppy like that - it's just who they are.

So, if Vampire Weekend dressed like hipsters and claimed downtown residence like The Strokes, all of you hipster poseurs would like them a whole lot more. That is, until they got too popular. Then you'd turn on them for being rich kids who had everything given to them.

I'm not a big fan of most of this "yacht rock" scene but I can at least understand why Yeasayer and MGMT get some hype. Of all the bands to explode as the frontrunner of this pretty bland "movement," why on earth Vampire Weekend??? I'm not offended because they're rich...I'm offended because they're BLAND!

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 6:06 PM

Why does everyone get so passionate about their hate for a band? Take it easy. You don't have to like every band in the world. No one does. But that doesn't mean that you should trash any band that is not, in your OPINION, a good band. VW is just a laid back band with a quirky sound. They may not be suitable for lovers of traditional rock, but that doesn't mean they suck. You people should quit being such douche bags about petty things. Personally, I'm neutral on VW. I don't love them, or hate them. However, I would like to point out that they have more talent in their collective pinky fingers than anyone in this blog that has said they suck.

Posted by Brad | March 9, 2008 6:29 PM

^^...and how exactly can you "point that out" Brad? Lots of talented musicians read and comment on this blog. Many who you probably pay money to see. You'd be quite surprised.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 6:36 PM

.hsal

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 6:40 PM

Possibly, but I'm sure that the majority of the people who have made negative comments about this band do not fall into that category.

And also, just for future reference, who might those talented musicians be?

poor song writing and poor performance.
nothing original.
it's a shame that this is what passes for good music these days to a lot of people.
there are so many things out there that are so much better to listen to.

lot's of hype will take you far (clearly), but in five years time these guys will be back at the country club playing golf and talking about the fun times they had when they had that band...

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2008 7:44 PM

^^^^^

You've made my point. All the people ripping on Vampire Weekend are, it seems, comm college dropouts/onetime members of shitty DIY rock bands, who are now 30, tend bar at a hipster club in Wburg, sport a fashionable/uber-gay beard, and think it's bad-ass of them to hate on the uppercrust.

But of course, they're really just bitter and jealous because their lives are so damn miserable.

"lot's of hype will take you far (clearly), but in five years time these guys will be back at the country club playing golf and talking about the fun times they had when they had that band..."

This sounds like a definition of most pop music to me. Short-lived and then it's gone. It's only a phenomenon of the last ~20ish years that pop has staying power. I think with the way music has become in this decade we might see a return to this (compounded by the return to "single" culture vs. whole albums). Or maybe I'm full of shit.

This is irrespective of VW though, I think they're shit.

Oh, Aaron. Sweet Aaron. Why so worked up?

Don't be bitter because your band didn't make it, while a band featuring 4 cute, clean-cut rich boys who went to Columbia did.

I'm not much of a coffee fan - it makes me jittery. I just drink booze. Lots of booze. In fact, I don't think I've ever so much as uttered the word 'barista' before. Are you a 'barista', Aaron? Do you stick dirty tampons in snobby patron's morning brew?

Why do you hate them, Aaron? Do you hate them for their freedom? Because if you hate them simply because their rich and preppy and received a good education, well then I think you hate a little country I like to call America. You know there are other people who hate American rich kids - the terrorists.

Are you a terrorist, Aaron?

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, Aaron?

Posted by Loren | March 10, 2008 12:31 AM

I'll admit it; I'm a little jealous of Vampire Weekend. That's why I come here, to read the inevitable backlash of a band who finds success so fast.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 1:46 AM

wow.

Did I really just read a post in ALL CAPS by
by the band's A&R guy? Jesus f*ing Christ.

Ya know, I'm actually starting to feel bad for
these kids b/c when this whirlwind putters out
around June-Sept, & XL and their management
have grabbed as much $$ in the 'money tank'
as they can before turning back to the white stripes,
these kids are gonna be fucked; creatively.

They're smart, talented kids, but its iresponsible
to 'fuel the fire' this much, this fast. There is no
where to go, and no way to sustain it. And I'm
SURE they have every intention of making a
good 2nd and 3rd record. And having people
listen to them. Seems unlikely @ this pace.

I've always thought there to be a formula to
this music 'game'...the fall is twice as fast as
the rise.

Ps*they most certainly care about being cool.
Don't kid yourself.

Posted by ugh | March 10, 2008 2:21 AM

I really doubt that was actually their A&R dude. It's kind of silly to imagine it actually could be. Probably just some other much less successful A&R dude upset he couldn't bring them in.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 7:18 AM

i don't "hate" VW
and i do in fact like several songs on their record

but they sound terrible live.
(or it just A-Punk?)
it sounds so bad and tired
and sounds much more put together and infectious on the record.
somehow it's as if the singer can't recreate his vocals and is singing it as if he weren't himself
but someone TRYING to sound like him.
and the "hey hey hey hey" sound awkwardly forced and out of place.
i felt embarassed for the guys.
the Morning Becomes Eclectic performance is made of the same lethargic effort.

and honestly, (again, don't hate them, but) their songs are just not THAT incredible.
they most definitely DO NOT match the hype they are receiving.
very rarely does quality equate hype, but it happens.
with VW, it is not happening.

Vampire Weekend looked so AWKWARD during those TV Promos. Poor guys.

I've seen them live before and they were excellent both times. I thought their SNL performances were both meh though and the string section drowned everything else out. The bass and drums were barely audible and the guitar and keys were nonexistent. Anyone else think that it just sounded empty?

Who's the all caps guy? This whole tread reads like played out Tarantino dialog. Here's all I know about Vampire Weekend: they had a spread in GQ. In another time, you'd hear a song you liked and wonder who did it until you discovered it. These days, you hear a band's name again and again but never know any of their songs. At least those Strokes guys have 'Last Night'. Until this Vampire Weekend band gets a song on an iPod commercial, I think I'll stay in the slow lane.

Posted by greg | March 10, 2008 12:37 PM

Most of you people seriously are idiots. More hipster bullshit thinking they invented the music scene and their bands are so new and fresh and doing things no one else has done before. Meanwhile their musical knowledge goes back about 5 years. They know nothing about music. Some types of music are complaicated and some are just fun and put a smile on your face.
I like all kinds of music and try not to close myself off.
All i know is A-Punk is a fun song. Its catchy and it makes me smile and its fun to dance around to with a girl. Are they the greatest band in the world? Of course not. A band does not have to be for me to enjoy them. Sometimes it is nice to just "keep it simple stupid"

Oh and by the way. You Bklyn dummies should not hate on these guys just because they are so much smarter than you.

Vampire Weekend drummer: "Yeah, could you just make the drum sound a little lighter?"

Recording Engineer: "It's turned down as far as it can go."

Vampire Weekend drummer: "I know, I just want the drum sound to be more like a pinky hitting a wet paper towel, you know?"

Honestly on a night where Madonna is going to be inducted into the ROCK hall of fame, cant you see how stupid some of you are to be attacking this band. There are a lot more worse things happening in the music world.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 1:12 PM

not true.
vampire weekend is everything that's wrong with music.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 1:29 PM

"vampire weekend is everything that's wrong with music"

So says the jackass.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 1:34 PM

vampire weekend = every sign of the apocalypse

really though, the number of comments that have appeared on this thread in response to them just appearing on a tv show says something. maybe this is contributing to that "buzz" thing i keep hearing about?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 1:35 PM

#41 Indie Music
January 30, 2008 by clander

If you want to understand white people, you need to understand indie music. As mentioned before, white people hate anything that’s “mainstream” and are desperate to find things that are more genuine, unique, and reflective of their experiences.

Fortunately, they have independent music.

A white person’s iPod (formerly CD collection) is not merely an assemblage of music that they enjoy. It is what defines them as a person. They are always on the look out for the latest hot band that no one has heard of so that one day, they can hit it just right and be into a band BEFORE they are featured in an Apple commercial. To a white person, being a fan of a band before they get popular is one of the most important things they can do with their life. They can hold it over their friends forever!

Indie music also produces a lot of concerts, for which white people can attend and meet other white people. It’s especially useful, since they are attending the same concert, they both like the artist and can easily strike up a conversation that will flow from band at the show->other bands they like->where they went to/go to school->where to get the best vegan food in town->agreement to meet at said restaurant for awkward date.

It is worth noting that white people are expected to stay current with music and go to concerts well into their 40s. Unlike at dance or hip hop clubs, there are few stigmas attached to being the “old guy at the club.”

But BE WARNED, talking about Indie Music with white people is perhaps the most dangerous subject you touch upon. One false move and you will lose their respect and admiration forever. Here are some general rules

Bands that have had their songs in an Apple ad are still marginally acceptable
Bands that have had their songs in ads for other companies are not acceptable
If you mention a band you like and the other person has heard of them, you lose. They own you. It is essential that you like the most obscure music possible.
Remember, popular artists can turn unpopular in a heartbeat (Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, The Strokes), so you would be best to stick to the following statements: “I love the Arcade Fire,” “I still think the Montreal scene is the best in the world,” “I would die without Stereogum or Fluxblog“* and “Joanna Newsom is maybe the most original artist today.”

*-do not substitute Stereogum for Pitchfork, as this is one of those things that used to be cool, but is now not cool.

I become smarter everytime the vampire weekend album is playing in the background.

It makes me not say dumb stuff

Hi guys. I think the Vampire Weekend album is peachy keen. And they're the first band I've heard successfully cover Radiohead without blowing it.

And that's right. They're no Jimmy Buffet. We leave that up to Jack Johnson.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:18 PM

This is what happens when you let people play fast and loose with the definition of indie rock. We are all guilty.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:19 PM

"When did it become a sin to make fun, catchy music?"

Right on Sam. The day "bands" forgot to do this was the day the music died.

Posted by uber1 | March 10, 2008 2:20 PM

Almost as bad as Arcade Fire... Almost.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:39 PM

Can Anon1:09 get some love please! Hysterical!

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:45 PM

Vampire Weekend is sexy and makes me in the mood for sexy activity.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 2:55 PM

Vampire Weekend lit an Arcade Fire in my soul.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 3:01 PM

So anon 2:55 is all ready for some lights out missionary passionless sex?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 3:03 PM

like if the strokes played ska, they'd sound like that and suck...

Posted by moldymind | March 10, 2008 3:09 PM

Hey hey, don't hate on missionary - I thought we were supposed to be ripping VW here.

Really, it ain't that bad.

Vampire Weekend's music is so powerful that I really hope that they do not put out a second album because on that day of release there will be rioting in the streets from people trying to get there hands on a copy.

*special note: in this scenario the online traffic will be so high it will force people to go out and physically buy the album.

Posted by Nostradamus | March 10, 2008 3:37 PM

Wait... they cover Radiohead?! And someone thinks this is 'good'?

Posted by greg | March 10, 2008 3:46 PM

At least there was something funny on SNL for once.

DECK SHOES ARE THE NEW DOC MARTINS.

Posted by Kris Chen | March 10, 2008 5:02 PM

Matt Pinfield likes 'em

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 5:29 PM

To think that when people used to think of "New York Rock," bands like The Heartbreakers, Blondie, Pussy Galore and Sonic Youth immediately came to mind. Now we have Vampire Weekend??? Hell...we all know Williamsburg turned sorta annoying afterwards but I'd still take The Strokes/Interpol/YYYs years over this type of bland shit anyday.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 7:58 PM

How come no one likes exactly the same music that I like?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2008 8:06 PM

"Matt Pinfield likes 'em"

Matt Pinfield used to be a major speed freak. Fact.

Comparing Vampire Weekend and The Strokes is tricky; very different sounds and a huge gap in talent/confidence. The hype each band received in the early going - and their extremely fast rise to "the top" - is certainly comparable. Neither bands write complex songs, but The Strokes embrace that more successfully and create better music as a result.

I went into my first listen of "Vampire Weekend" entirely open minded and was left seriously questioning all the attention they've garnered. The Strokes hit the scene w/ immense hype, but they helped pave the way for countless bands that followed them. I don't see the music of Vampire Weekend opening any doors for anyone.

Bottom line: I don't see what Vampire Weekend is doing that's so special or groundbreaking (certainly nothing that justifies playing SNL this early in their career). I thought they looked and sounded completely unworthy of that stage during both songs they played.

The Strokes also played SNL shortly after the release of their first record:

Another Vampire Weekend will come along before you know it. These guys simply aren't writing songs that will afford them staying power as a big band.

"We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving

Theres a choice were making
Were saving our own lives

Its true well make a better day
Just you and me"

..............................................................But with that being said, Vampire Weekend, suck rotten eggs over a pile of cow manuer.

lol ok Vampire weekend is pretty good, they have a very quirky sound. But they are not the beatles of our generation. And i dont even like the beatles.

vampire weekend isnt even the papa roach of our generation

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 4:23 PM

strokes and vw are the same...they rehash stuff that's been done before (better) and get recognized for it because of who their fathers, uncles, grandparents, etc are.

rich-boy scenesters...nyc to the bone

Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2008 4:39 PM

Having read most of the postings it just shows how small minded we humans can be. Little minds think little thoughts. Vampire Weekend rock on baby rock on.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2008 12:22 AM

Early ripe, early rot.

Posted by Anonymous | March 14, 2008 6:24 PM

why do people like music that so blatantly just rips off other music..?

ditch these idiots and go and listen to the late 70's/early 80's artists they just steal from..

and they are ju
