What's going on Tuesday?

Leonard Cohen, RnR Hall of Fame induction - Mar 10, 2008 (Ryan Muir)
Leonard Cohen @ RNR Hall of FAme

Madonna spoke of being possessed by magic as she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Leonard Cohen, rocker John Mellencamp, pop band The Dave Clark Five and instrumental group The Ventures.

"I felt like I had been possessed by some magic and luckily for me I have been miraculously and continuously possessed by some kind of magic," Madonna said at the annual Hall of Fame ceremony in New York.

"I have gone on to do so many things in my life, from writing children's books, to designing clothes, to directing a film. But for me it always does, and it always will, come back to the music, so thank you," she said.

Madonna, 49, was inducted by pop star Justin Timberlake, who has co-written and co-produced half the songs on her new album "Hard Candy," which is released next month. "Nobody has gotten into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame looking this damn fine," he said. "You're no old museum piece." [Reuters]

Frankly, I expected more from this site than to highlight Madonna over the other inductees. She is by far the least talented and given the level of fandom for Mr. Cohen on this site, it would have been more appropriate to cover his acceptance speech instead of just posting a picture.

I watched the second half of the show. It was good. Billy Joel's introduction of John Mellancamp should become a classic. Tom Hanks was good as well. The Stooges played two Madonna songs. I missed the Ventures though. They are great.

Siobhan, stop whining--do we pay for BV's services? I think not. He's only been posting about 30 items a day lately--plus planning shows in Austin. And you are complaining?

On the other hand, I too missed Lou Reed and LC's speech, just caught some of Damien Rice singing Hallelujah. Does anyone know what they said or have video ??

- Ben Harper inducted Little Walter and then played and sang with harmonica-player James Cotton.
- I really dug The Ventures music -- I didn't realize that they wrote so many songs.
- Lou Reed's induction of Leonard Cohen was a bit rambling. Cohen's acceptance speech, on the other hand, was perfect and dignified. And Damien Rice's performance of Hallelujah was simple and passionate.
- Justin Timberlake was full of innuendo and humor in his long-winded induction of Madonna. And then Iggy and the Stooge's played (I forget) and Ray of Light! And Mike Watt was on bass! (I thought that could have been him.)
- As mentioned above, both Hanks' and Joel's inductions were interesting -- Hanks' was quite long-winded for the Dave Clark Five, and Joel rambled a bit as a grouchy old guy.
- I was actually pleasantly surprised with Mellencamp and his music.

While there have been a better crop of inductees in the past, it was still kind of interesting to watch.

"And then Iggy and the Stooge's played (I forget) and Ray of Light! And Mike Watt was on bass! (I thought that could have been him.)"

The first song was Burning Up. And yes, that is Mike Watt, he is now the Stooges bass player.

trashing Madonna's talent as a musician is nothing less than pure snobism and even ignorance.
She's pop but always brought top quality top to mainstream listeners and just think about how many pop songs she wrote or sang that are now classics.
Snobism in music is the worst thing ever, music is for everybody, it's the more approchable art of them all and not something that belongs to some self proclaimed "in the know" and usually "Know better".
Congrats to Madonna and congrats to BV for aknowledging her talent.

@Justin Timberlake: "'Nobody has gotten into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame looking this damn fine,' he said. 'You're no old museum piece.'" SO FUCKING WHAT!

@Siobhan: "Frankly, I expected more from this site than to highlight Madonna over the other inductees." It's called irony. The derision is implied.

@frenchy: You're right, her music is good as pop goes. But if *I* ran the ROCK 'N' ROLL Hall of Fame, she wouldn't qualify.

Iggy is sexier than Timberlake.
