Its Market Hotel.
Look around the sites for all the bands who are playing, someone spilled.

as of 4pm Todd says:

--2NITE--> --YES!-- a small # of tickets are still available @ CINDERS for the secret(ish) DEERHUNTER / Atlas Sound show tonight! snatch 'em up, not a lot left!

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:07 PM

oooh!!! I'm holding my fucking breath.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:17 PM

I would have attempted to go, but since I will be at another show, I won't be near email at 7pm. Too bad, I would have attempt to make both shows, even if I came too late.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:17 PM

What's the big deal? I could just get Deerhunter from Netflix and watch it in the comfort of my own home. That's some vintage DeNiro in that movie.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:18 PM

i hear the show is inside pitchforks' collective asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:21 PM

My buddy used to roadie for Collective Asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:25 PM

"I'm holding my fucking breath."

please continue to do so.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:28 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:30 PM

Hey 4:28, have a sense of humor, dork.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:32 PM

collective asshole was a great band, but i felt their material started going downhill after they put out Anus Destructicus

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 4:39 PM

I'm fed up with the giggling dog.

What? Oh I thought you said Duckhunter.

Posted by CTC | April 11, 2008 4:39 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 5:26 PM

I just got my email. It is in fact at the Market Hotel. Why in the fuck did they need to keep that a secret???? Wish it was somewhere else smaller but whatever should be a great show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 6:10 PM

It's sold out according to Todd P's website.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 6:16 PM

Todd's exact words are "--2NITE--> --HEY-- 2NITE'S SHOW IS SOLD OUT!!!! "

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 6:20 PM

JUST GOT 2 TIX AND CAN'T GO.

GO TO CRAIGSLIST AND BUY EM FROM ME, FACE VALUE.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 7:16 PM

It's definitely Market Hotel? My son and three friends got tix but he f-ed up his email address and didn't get the message. Can you reconfirm...thanx...an understanding parent (who went to secret shows at, like, the Mudd Club back in the day).

Posted by michael Hill | April 11, 2008 7:55 PM

^^^Now you wouldn't be an undercover cop or anything like that would ya Michael?

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 7:58 PM

I'm not an undercover cop. Geez. That wouldn't have crossed my mind, though I do understand. Full disclosure: I do music supervising for movies and TV, Shortbus was one of my most recent...you can check me out on IMDB: Michael Hill.

As I said, my son and his buddies were stranded trying to figure this out. That's all. I know where he's coming from because I did the same stuff at his age. And I figured this thread was the way to go.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 9:05 PM

Wow...I bet Michael Hill never knew he'd drudge up so much anger and self-loathing just by trying to do his son a solid.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 9:09 PM

oh 8:58, you lose again.

all your life you wonder, why does no one like me when i say funny things like "jizzm" and sperm runeth-ing places?

do we not still laugh and fall off our bongs talking about semen and rape? are we not human?

alas, 8:58, you poor soul, grow up and realize no one likes you because you say these things and think you're being witty. how was 'south park' last night, good ?

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 9:12 PM

I don't understand why anybody would be so hateful and disgusting to another human being. You should really think about your mental health. Don't think that it has anything to do with a sense of humor - it doesn't. If these are the kinds of things you would say if granted anonymity you are really fucked in the head.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 11:47 AM

AIDS WOLF!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 11:51 AM

Not trying to hate as I really dig Bradford and most things he and his bands do but I really wasn't feeling last night's show. Maybe it was how tired and smoke filled I was by the time they finally went on but I was just waiting for him to put down that guitar and have fun with the experimental vocal effects and loops that make Deerhunter (and Atlas Sounds) sound so cool and unique in the first place. The new songs sounded a little to straight new-school Atlanta indie rock influenced to me. Gotta give the long smokey night to Aids Wolf.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:07 PM

the deerhunter show last night was a bit of a disaster.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:41 PM

there were too many bands and deerhunter started way too late. and as there is no ventilation in that place the smoke and heat created a really uncomfortable environment, which totally overshadowed the real reason everyone came - for the music.

too bad so many people that came for deerhunter had to leave early (including me) due to the shoddy organization.

from what i could hear from the songs they were great and the album is going to be masterful

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:41 PM

the bush administration could have done a better time organizing the event

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:44 PM

it was a cool night, but the deerhunter set felt a little uninspired. I think the combination sauna / smokehouse got a little tough to take by about 3am, which was barely three songs into their set. they're also too good for that weak sound system.

welcome surprise no. 1: rings. all kinds of hot lesbian action. started soooo slow but then built to this shining, pulsing climax... mmmmmm...

welcome surprise no. 2: knyfe hyts, and their ridiculous stoner bacchanale. only catch was the MC, that shit was kinda flaccid. they have all these weird fucking fans, it made sweating fun for a while.

unwelcome non-surprise: aids wolf. bank fucking sucks. some whiny, fake-ass hipster metal. weak. but they sure make cool silkscreened posters. I guess you can listen to good music and still sound like ass.

final thought: no fucking way can the market hotel throw shows this big in another month or two -- by june, it will be 95 degrees in there after an hour or two.

final final thought: anyone else run into the pickpocketing duo?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:46 PM

I wouldn't "give" the night to any of the bands, the Market Hotel can keep it. The sound in that ashtray SUCKS and is totally unbecoming of any band that clatters and crashes, rather than plays, in it.

And I couldn't make it to the 3 am Deerhunter set, something I am feeling very sad and hopeless about. What a drag it is getting old.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:53 PM

Heh....I agree Deerhunter ended up going on way too late, and it sort of killed the momentum and everyone's energy, but at the same time the entire evening was still pretty enjoyable. quite honestly, the band that shouldn't have been on this bill was Rings. They were quite possibly the worst crap I've ever seen.

AIDS Wolf slayed. Worst name ever, though.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 12:54 PM

deerhunter last night=show of the year. easy.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 1:27 PM

you should of gone to the pissed jeans show it was way better. 2up rules

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 2:13 PM

Whenever a hipster jam band pulls out a guest named MC Tracheotomy you know you're in trouble. Oh, Knyfe Hyts...

AIDS Wolf were like being punched in the face for 20 minutes.

Mocrocastle will likely be quite good.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 2:38 PM

show of the year? It was fun/late/smokey/entertaining/tiring

but definitely not show of the year

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 2:43 PM

The sound did not suck if you were up close. Too bad those who left before Deerhunter. They were great, Dome of the new songs were ridiculously good. Knyfe Hyts were really great also, Aids Wolf sucks, Fun night. I literslly stepped on Avey Tare but hey thats what he gets for sitting on the floor right by th exit from the performance space. Sorry again Dave.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

Worst organized show. EVER. Deerhunter played a Pylon song. That was pretty neat.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 6:33 PM

you little bitches.

it's not the fucking Bowery Ballroom, thank god.

YOU WENT TO A LOFT PARTY IN BUSHWICK. It was smoky, it was kinda late. so what? Noone made you choose this over qhatver bullshit was at the Mercury Lounge.

Deerhunter is a fucking rock band. Lighten up and try to enjoy yourself once in a while.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 8:12 PM

i agree...thank god this show wasn't at the bowery or merc, with their terrible professional sound system. i hate high quality audio; so do most bands.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 8:47 PM

frankly, I don't know what you're talking about. the market hotel sounds really great as a room and they have a good sound system in there. I've personally stood on the subs, so they've got em for sure, and you can see there are a couple decent looking monitors on the stage. what else are you looking for exactly?

the sound was great all night actually, you are nuts!

there was feedback momentarily during deerhunter, but then again they gave a shout out to their personal soundguy for the night, Matt Littlejohn, the dude who works for TV on the Radio. Any complaints about the mix would have to be directed towards him, no?

anyway, you're a little bitch for being such a nitpicky fuck anyway. I'd bet 20 bucks you're A) clueless about sound and don't know what you're talking about, and B) you just like to complain and are bothered that these kids are doing something cool outside of your drab 9 to 5 existence.

Don't you get enough boring shit that happens on schedule all week long at work? have fun for once.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 8:59 PM

agreed. sound system was good 'n solid all night after they fixed some kind of breakdown during the first band's first song. That room sounds excellent anyway.

drums especially really resonate clearly in that space.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:07 PM

it's kind of nice to see a show go late once in awhile. seems like every indie rock concert is over by 10:30 these days. it's nice to see something with more of a party vibe.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:09 PM

If I remember correctly , there was a whole thread about how the sound supposedly sucked the last time Deerhunter played too... at Bowery Ballroom.

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2007/07/deerhunter_play_3.html

Maybe it's the FANS who suck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:21 PM

deerhunter played a party with their friends. it was a chill vibe and people played long sets, took their time getting set up and whatnot. people were smoking, a lot.

shit went late, but whatever, it wasn't a schoolnight. it was a party show, not a concert at Lincoln Center.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:27 PM

"YOU WENT TO A LOFT PARTY IN BUSHWICK."

How is it a party if you had to buy a ticket in advance?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:27 PM

blaah, the sound is terrible in that space, and I'm not talking about the possibly shoddy system or the dudes manning it. You shouldn't have to be standing two feet from the stage in order for the sound to be acceptable, drab little bitchy nitpicky fuck or not. (Did I leave any of the namecalling out?)

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:33 PM

woops- clueless, complainer, unable to have fun. Got it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:43 PM

what difference does it make whether their were tickets or not? any fool could figure out the advance tickets and secret show bullshit's just a way to throw off the cops and the tattletale phone calls from rival club assholes.

if Deerhunter played a totally announced, advertised show at a spot like Market Hotel, it would get shut down in a second because those tattletale calls really do happen.

You may not like these kinds of parties, ones where shit goes late, where the beer's cheap, where people are smoking (oh no!), where there is a wide variety of bands (some loud and aggressive) but that's where Deerhunter's roots are. They are a punk band, they wanted to play a relaxed party, for once, with a bunch of bands who are their friends.

You'll have ample opportunity to see them play before 11pm on ten foot high stages with overpriced beer and uptight vibes in the future, I'm sure.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:43 PM

the Market Hotel is a good sounding room, there's a well known consensus among band and show goers that this is true.

big, influential bands really seem to want to play there, how do you explain this if it is so all around terrible and mismanaged?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:47 PM

20 bucks says the guy who's so complainy about the sound at market Hotel is the same guy who thought the sound sucked at Bowery in that thread last summer too.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:51 PM

20 bucks says this thread is overflowing with know it all douchbags, FTW

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:54 PM

that's not name calling, it's descriptive vocabulary, and it happens to be accurate.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:55 PM

zzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:59 PM

20 bucks says the people defending the sound at that space either had something to do with putting on the show, are in a band that played there, or friends with a band or sucking Todd P's dick.

For real. The sound there sucks.

But in its defense what do you expect. It IS illegal, it's fun, I'm glad these things are happening

It's a shitty bushwick space that charges 8 bucks to see a show.

the whole thing reeks of the early 2000's (thankfully)

the only thing I highly disagree with is the person who said "so the show started a little late"

2:30 am is FUCKING Late for a show to start (the headliner)

weekend or not

yes I'm 32
but it doesnt' matter that's late

and the shitty bands that opened were probably the most to blame, or whoever booked them.

should have just been a DJ and Deerhunter and beer.

now that would have been a way to buck the trend

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2008 1:27 AM

yo, what were some of the deerhunter song titles? anyone happen to catch them?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2008 2:00 AM

"there's a well known consensus among band and show goers that this is true."

Really? How can there be a "consensus" if there are people bashing the sound? Do you own a dictionary?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2008 3:07 PM

I am reading this naked, how ironic...

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2008 8:43 PM

Let's see. I'm willing to put my site on this post, I think ToddP puts on amazing shows and is by far the best DIY promoter these days, and I generally like Market Hotel. But, there are 2 major problems with the venue in my opinion: the sound system and the overwhelming cigarette smoke.
I wrote all about this a month ago, after the Oneida show.
http://www.nyctaper.com/?p=144
I believe these are objective opinions, although the problem with the cigarette smoke is exacerbated by my own personal health issue (asthma). The sound system definitely needs to be upgraded, and that is a pretty obvious fact. Its not terrible now, but the peak level static/crackling and the intermittent cutting out of vocal microphones are really problems that should be addressed.

Posted by nyctaper | April 13, 2008 9:11 PM

i liked golden triangle better when their vocals werent working

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2008 10:25 PM

i have to say i had a fun time on friday night, but Anon 1:27am and nyctaper have got it right.

The sound is not horrible, but not everything sounded right on Friday (though it got better as deerhunter's set went on). i dont really know much about sound, but i know what sounds good (ive been to plenty of shows, and a number of deerhunter shows).

the smoke is annoying for me, but i like having an alternative music space, and thats the price you pay i guess.

I do think the show wasn't organized well. I guess they have to start later, and that's fine, but it sucks having the headliner go on at 2:30am. Todd P puts on shows (and now sells tickets in advance to some of them). He's not throwing a chill loft party. Sure, the show can have that vibe, and that's one of the great things about Todd P shows, but at the end of the day he is putting on shows. Maybe thats the price you pay for the alternative, but I feel like the "unorganized" complaints are valid. People were paying to get an opportunity to see Microcastle for the first time. Not to see all the openers (i think 4 openers was excessive). Sure, the bands can (and should) be relaxed and having fun, but people still paid money to see a show, not hang out at a party.

Overall, I had a good time, and I though Microcastle was great. Especially the second half where i thought things picked up.

Overall thoug

(wow I have to specify)

but this quote cracks me up to NO END

who is this tool?

"You may not like these kinds of parties, ones where shit goes late, where the beer's cheap, where people are smoking (oh no!), where there is a wide variety of bands (some loud and aggressive) but that's where Deerhunter's roots are. They are a punk band, they wanted to play a relaxed party, for once, with a bunch of bands who are their friends.

wow dude, you are so raw. you are cool with cigg smoke and late parties. I wish I was your friend.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 12:41 AM

show was a great time, good performances, good conglomeration of people. it was a pretty epic memorable night. organisation was totally effective, it was just also organised in a laid back fashion, probably on purpose because that's the vibe Deerhunter was going for.

Those guys play a lot of shows at places with a lot less heart than the Market Hotel, it's got to get uninspiring, and they probably wanted a change of pace. Personally I'm glad they did!

anyway, what's so bad about it going late into the night? it was a good time and the bands were great, and it wasa Friday party in thia late night town. And despite what some dudes on this site are insisting, the sound was totally not an issue. Who knows where those couple of guys are coming from. I've been to several shows at Market Hotel and never have thought the sound was lacking. It's a sweet sounding space and the PA is powerful.

it's weird that something about these shows gets judged so harshly by a vocal minority in this blog's comments. I guess some people just aren't comfortable unless it's that predictable professional club experience. But there are also a lot of us who appreciate the less formal vibe that these loft shows have. I hope the organisers don't take all this naysaying to heart and change what ain't broke.

The Market Hotel and all these loft shows in general are a welcome alternative to the sort of bland, alienating experience you can get at New York club shows.

I had a helluva time on Friday and I'm pretty grateful someone is putting on shows like that one, lots of people are. Maybe shows like this aren't some people's cuppa joe, but these bigger bands also play at those more conventional clubs if that's what you're into. You can always wait till they play one of those places.

Your loss though, rock concerts can be more than just flat recitals of a band's music. Rock n roll is better when it's passionate and rowdy, like Friday's show was.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 1:25 AM

this show was fine, pretty great actually, but what it is is just that Deerhunter's gotten popular with a less underground crowd. Lately Deerhunter's getting big with a lot of people who don't live the bohemian lifestyle, and those people just aren't used to DIY shows.

They're going on and on about lateness and smoke and complaining about some make believe sound problems, but really they just didn't feel comfortable in that environment because they don't usually go to those kinds of parties, and they don't usually stay out that late.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 1:37 AM

show was fucking awesome

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 2:28 AM

incredible show
cant wait for mccarren

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 3:54 AM

I bet Radiohead wishes to play Market Hotel now, because the place is so on the edge of what NYC scene is. This is THE place to play, like CB's in 1977.

I read these comments and I wish I went there instead of Man Man/Yeasayer because that show had the vibe of a high school talent show, the guy on the stage said so himself. And Dont Worry Be Happy 100 times over and over was terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 9:20 AM

"I bet Radiohead wishes to play Market Hotel now, because the place is so on the edge of what NYC scene is. This is THE place to play, like CB's in 1977."

It's funny, because it is slightly true. Back in the '80s, it was normal for "indie" bands to start their sets at 2am. I think Jesus & Mary Chain started at 3am once. It was great, because many of us worked restaurant jobs and we basically went straight to the show afterwards.

The main difference with Market Hotel is that it is in Bushwick. We never had to leave Manhattan after our jobs to go to a party. Work, party, train back home to downtown or Queens or Bronx. I miss those days, but I am happy to see music still being made.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 9:56 AM

I can't stand the people that come on here and act like they know what Deerhunter (or any band for that matter) was thinking.

"it was just also organised in a laid back fashion, probably on purpose because that's the vibe Deerhunter was going for.

Those guys play a lot of shows at places with a lot less heart than the Market Hotel, it's got to get uninspiring, and they probably wanted a change of pace."

What are you talking about kid? And how old are you?

I remember once leaving a Butthole Surfers show at the Peppermint Lounge at 5 a.m. Of course, I was something like 19 years old, so it was a little easier to handle back then.

smoke was overwhelming. just look at the photos. yes, it was late - which isn't a problem IF YOU DON'T START AT 10pm. it's tough to stay in the sauna/smoke box from 10pm to 4am. i'm not typically a "complainer" but the sound/smoke needs some changing. if market hotel wasn't illegal, they'd have no problem having people smoke outside. guess it's the price you pay.

sound was ok, smoke's a lot, but no more than every bar used to have 5 years ago.

used to be that every show was in a smoke filled space. these bitchy little kids are YOUNG.

probably secret so people without tickets wouldn't show up, as they do for shows like dan deacon, etc.
