Bradford Cox

it will be a deerhunter show. we are playing the new album we have recorded with Nicolas Vernhes at the amazing Rare Book Room here in Brooklyn in its entirety. The reason we did not announce it as such is that a.) it was originally intended to be just an atlas sound show, but we have had such a great time recording with each other and rehearsing in the studio that we thought it would be fun to try and pull off an impromptu show with borrowed equipment. and b.) we weren't sure it would work out at first. I just want to say that we have been doing shows with Todd P for years now (he gave us shows before anyone would even think of talking to us.) Todd is the most upstanding and all-around dedicated dudes I've ever dealt with. He knows what he's doing and always keeps his priorities straight - putting on fun shows and treating bands well. I hate to see people criticize his methods without knowing really what they are talking about. In my opinion, as an outsider, this city is very lucky to have someone putting so much effort into putting on amazing shows. Dude also is a fox. On another note: I seriously doubt the show is sold out and it probably won't sell out. I don't know much about the details but I'd encourage people to just chill and try and come out and have fun with us. Also re: the Cinder gallery - i see no problem with one independent business helping another and see no reason for complaint in that aspect. Hope those who are interested will come check out the new songs, they are a lot different and we've been working really hard and having a great time. Respect to all.

Bradford

I don't understand the need for secrecy for a Deerhunters show. Their shows were never at big venues in the first place.

Too bad there are so many other shows that night.

deerhunter >>>>>> anything else going on....ever

"I don't understand the need for secrecy for a Deerhunters show. Their shows were never at big venues in the first place."

what are you talking about? Their next show will be at McCarren Pool and before that they headlined Bowery Ballroom and played South Street Seaport

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 1:57 PM

good to see he's sick of people making shit up on messageboards.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:01 PM

Goddamnit, I was really enjoying not hearing from that idiot for awhile.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:06 PM

glad someone whose opinion actually matters came out and said this.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:10 PM

me too, 2:10. I really believe it's 1 or 2 people making multiple comments which are critical of Todd and it does piss me off as well that he can be slandered like that on this message board with no consequence.

And no I am not an employee of Todd's, don't live at Market Hotel or any of the other nonsense.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:16 PM

He is seriously the most awesome guy in music today; I love the positive energy that he puts out.

PS: Whomever said that there was no need for a secret Deerhunter show
a) obviously did not read the message, or the previous post (Deerhunter were apparently not supposed to play another NYC show before their upcoming dates), and
b) clearly does not understand how much people love Deerhunter.

Microcastles is going to be the record of the decade.

Posted by Mark B. | April 7, 2008 2:24 PM

2:16 - are you 16?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:25 PM

"a) obviously did not read the message, or the previous post (Deerhunter were apparently not supposed to play another NYC show before their upcoming dates),"

this is mistaken, even if they have a radius clause in the contract that would at most be 60 days and this show is more than a 2 months before they would play at the pool(is there a date on that? is it a free?)

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:40 PM

i'd love to see this show, but cinders is pretty out of the way for me to just stop in...no location info/door tix for real??

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:52 PM

"Goddamnit, I was really enjoying not hearing from that idiot for awhile."

look in the mirror

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:56 PM

"what are you talking about? Their next show will be at McCarren Pool and before that they headlined Bowery Ballroom and played South Street Seaport"

What are YOU talking about? The McCarren Pool show headliner are the Black Lips (who are getting huge). Bowery Ballroom, even though is the best venue in town, is still a small venue, and even non-popular bands bring people out for a free show like SSS.

I'm not saying that Deerhunter are not good, just saying there is no need to hide the fact that they are playing, unless the venue is really tiny. It probably will be at Glasslands.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 2:59 PM

Market Hotel maybe?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:02 PM

glasslands is 21+ so no.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:03 PM

I think it's pretty obvious where the gig is going to be. Where have the majority of Todd P's shows been recently...?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:14 PM

would be awesome if it was at shangri la in greenpoint. deerhunter played there not too long ago. really love that place..

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:14 PM

Why can't any of Todd P's minions take the heat? People can say whatever they want about the guy, yay or nay, and it can make little to no sense, and you can rip them for it, and so on...and if you like him, great, but don't try and tell people to not share their opinions, especially on the fucking internet of all places.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:21 PM

It is not going to be at Market Hotel. There would be no need to keep the location a secret if it was. I am guessing it is going to be at a much smaller place.

because it's sad to see the bowery presents resorting to attacks on todd p under the guise of it being "real attacks from people" (who just randomlly have an unnatural hatred for someone they don't even know).

it just gets tiring. fuck the bowery presents. that's who's fucking this town up. let's keep our eye on the ball here. not hating on todd p. for throwing a loft party or two. is that really worse than shows getting moved or the endless amounts of shady shit the bowery does?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:33 PM

" fuck the bowery presents. that's who's fucking this town up."

are you out of your mind? Let's put things into perspective here. They are "fucking this town up"???? Take the train out of Williamsburg once in a while.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:43 PM

The Bowery Presents group must be doing something right if they are now booking shows at MSG. They added MHoW and T5 to their list of venues last year. With all this growth, I seriously doubt they have people attacking Todd P on anonymous blogs? They can concentrate on booking the 3000 person T5, or they can attack Todd P who books 200 people show. They might want to attack/slander Live Nation, but Todd P is nothing to them.

Feeling a bit insecure?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 3:43 PM

who's feeling a bit insecure? except the legions coming on here to (shock) defend the bowery presents!

so... does this mean there not going to be a solo atlas sound set?

you narcissistic todd p interns/wannabe-interns should really get a clue...bowery presents does not care what todd p. why would they? how could todd p booking shows possibly be a negative for bowery? i am really interested in any semi-intelligent answer, cuz i can only see todd p being beneficial to bowery overall.

and some actual information to back up your crybaby rant might help me to understand exactly how bowery presents is "fucking this town up" "or the endless amounts of shady shit" bowery does. what do they do that is so terrible?

i have zero affiliation with bowery, other than having enjoyed many a bowery show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 4:52 PM

i'm about to poop.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 4:54 PM

Can everyone please stop accusing Todd P's interns of posting criticisms of Bowery Presents et al. on here. Anyone who has worked for Todd knows that he doesn't sit around all day moaning about Bowery Presents, he just focuses on his own shit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 5:13 PM

The funny part is that Todd P wouldn't condone all this slander against Bowery Presents, and Bowery Presents wouldn't condone any slander against Todd P.

the only legitimate complaint anyone has is the rules local bands have to follow which is that they can't advertise other local shows if they are booked at a Bowery Presents club, but that is standard business. How could a club stay in business if they have to take a chance on bands bringing people to the club, but then the bands are allowed to just play anywhere else that week. That lessens the chance people will come and therefore lessens the chance that the club can pay the employees and the rent and the electricity and ultimately stay in business. It's called an exclusivity clause and it is STANDARD everywhere in the concert business.

So how did Crystal Castles/Health pull off that Studio B/Mercury Lounge double header?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 7:13 PM

Maybe one of the shows sold out first...

Hey guys, for the record:

I DON'T THINK THAT BOWERY PRESENTS IS POSTING SHIT ABOUT MY SHOWS.

While there clearly are people / clubs / rival promotion orgs who do pull dirty tricks on mine and other people's underground shows; tattling to cops, spreading false rumors, making up phony shit on messsage boards, etc - I have never believed it's Bowery who does these things.

The people and entities who do these things are far pettier, far more patheticly failed losers who suck at life. They know who they are, and I know who they are. It ain't Bowery.

OH GOD. Calm down there sparky. I love what you do but you are getting a little stupid now. Oh yes, some nefarious forces are out there working against you to bring you down. Message boards are filled with idiots who do shit like this for no other reason than boredom at work and wanting to see how dumb people really are. The shows you throw are not the only ones hit by these people. As stated over and over, there would be no problem with the false rumours if people went and found out the info for themselves. Did you ever think the people who attack some of the places you throw the shows have valid reasons? Hate to tell you but there are some people who have been to Market Hotel who really do feel it is unsafe true or not.

Just keep doing what you are doing and dont worry about it too much. But please do not start believing your own press and thinking there is some huge greater force out to get you.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2008 11:13 PM

11:13: I don't think it's a stretch to believe that there are jealous loser competitors who play dirty pool against indy promoters and indy shows. it's a filthy industry. Club owners and bookers are often embittered assholes.

This manifests in ways more substantial than just message board shit talk and false rumors. You may have noticed that shows get shut down and some clubs get more official harassment than others? These aren't always because of unhappy neighbors.

stating this obvious fact doesn't make Todd P some paranoid meglomaniac.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 12:04 AM

^Truth.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 7:01 AM

Todd P deserves a lot of credit. The guy is really putting his neck on the line for us to be able to see these shows. If something tragic happened, dude would probably be sentenced to life in prison. He could promote rock shows for the prisoners though... which could be awesome!

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 8:42 AM

Anon 11:13 is an idiot.

lol@market hotel being unsafe. I love the 'New' New York.

Actually, the Rare Book Room is the cockiest, most arrogant studio on earth. You ever call that studio on the phone? Talk about stratospheric ego-time. And um, for what again?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 9:30 AM

you bring up a good point 9:30. I would say it's that condescending, "we are doing you a favor" attitude that sometimes bothers me about some clubs. In other words, places where patrons don't get treated with respect.

I never got that feeling going in to a Todd P show, either from him, or from his staff of volunteers. I get the feeling that they are doing it for the love of the music and I guess the rush of putting on a show and making some people happy. So yeah, Todd P makes this a better city. All the best to him.

HOW MANY TIMES HAS BRADFORD BOINKED TODD? I BET THEY WERE LISTENING TO DIVINE HAMMER

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 11:21 AM

does anyone have an idea of what time the Deerhunter show will start...I have a Mets game to attend Friday night, but would still love to see this show afterward, time permitting.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 2:25 PM

Not a big surprise but the "secret venue" is in fact Market Hotel.
