Alicia Keys' gangster rap conspiracy theory

Alicia Keys

In a potentially controversial chat with Blender mag, Alicia Keys, 27, says, "Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. Gangsta rap didn't exist."

Ms. Keys, sporting a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck, says she has been reading books by some of the members of the Black Panthers.

She says the feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers, which led to the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing." [Dallas News]

Why does Alicia Keys, a white women, speak for black people?

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 6:36 PM

uh, i always thought Al Gore invented ganster rap.

Thanks Alica!

its funny how alicia keys started off as supposedly a legitimate artist (played piano ect) and now sings like bullshit pop songs. her and john mayer at the grammys...what a horrible performance.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 6:44 PM

george bush doesn't care about black people

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 6:48 PM

"to stop another great black leader from existing"

so she's speaking of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. when she mentions great black leaders...really? really? set aside from whether or not one thinks yeah or neah on their style of music...she's saying they're elevated to the level of great leaders? wtf is she drinking these days?

Posted by really? | April 14, 2008 7:05 PM

Why do beautiful, talented artists like Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys (to name a couple) have to say such dumb ass shit? What a buzz kill. It's really a shame when they can use their prominence as strong, successful black women to elevate and become role models for others, when instead, they go and spout drivel like this. Makes me sad.

Posted by yo mama | April 14, 2008 7:11 PM

alicia keys is black, not white. and yes, that statement is fucking stupid

Posted by marc | April 14, 2008 7:28 PM

Aren't most of these "Gangsta Rappers" making most of their money selling music to white people (white kidz I should say). First time I ever heard of N.W.A. was in Jr High when I was at camp...and it was 12 & 13 year old white kids singing F the Police & Gangsta, Gangsta??? I have a feeling they didn't go shoot any policeman later though or each other just because of the music.

and she wears an AK-47 pendant. ha, what a fucktard.

I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn't help from crying. When she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line. I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be. I been looking for her even clean through Tennessee.

If hip hop was invented by the government and rock-n-roll was invented by the devil, who the fuck is responsible for Backstreet Boys?

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 8:39 PM

it was me... sorry i sometimes make mistakes...

just tell me you're pleased with the beastie boys

do you know how hard it was to create legitimate rap artists out of 3 white jewish boys?

and yes i was also the stylist behind Charlton Heston's version of Moses (after he found the burning pot bush). don't let anyone tell you straight men cant get highlights

and i'm quite certain those black panthers she's reading would all wholeheartedly approve of posing for the cover of blender showing just a bit o' skin. what to keep it real, ms. keys. then again, ice cube was bitching and complaining about burning hollywood down with public enemy back in the day, and he seems to be doing just fine as of late with his fake comedy/disney-for-crap films. it's a joke. either practice what you preach or stfu.

Posted by smileyoureoncamera | April 14, 2008 8:56 PM

I agree with her. Who were the ones who televised everything? Tupac glorified violence, but the media focused on him. And whoever was saying that Tupac and Biggie were the ones who Alicia was referring to when talking about great leaders, is an idiot. The media kept showing these guys so that the average white person, would perceive black people as "gangstas" because most of the black people they saw on TV, were "gangsta rappers." Everyone is so quick to bash Alicia on this without actually thinking. You turkeys.

Posted by Ari | April 14, 2008 9:05 PM

The ignorance of youngsters like her only hurt the children of today. Of COURSE she thinks gangsta rap was a marketing ploy--she wasn't old enough while it came to prominence! So now of course yongsters who follow her words will think the same fucking stupid bullshit instead of doing some simple research.

She is a total fucktard for saying that shit.

Well she is an idiot no doubt but do you know she made her bf Kerry Crucial wait a year before she gave him some pussy. What the fuck is that?

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2008 9:14 PM

>Well she is an idiot no doubt but do you know she made her bf Kerry Crucial wait a year before she gave him some pussy

that's just what she wants you to think!!! she really gave out pussy to the media a long time ago.

"i think its because minority kids have horrible parental influences and crap school systems. they are easily misled so when a homey starts talking about killing, they are like lemmings and follow whatever they say."

how about the parental influences on the lemmings that join the military and go half way around the world to kill for lies the government tells? many are "educated" well, and will still voluntarily go and murder people on the other side of the planet. just another idea...

as for "gangster rap"--there is, of course, an underlying racist element to it's bogey man status in the media, and here's why: so-called violent, gangster rap--which is obviously just a dramatic put on by the artists, playing out scenes and characters, etc--is said to be "influencing violence" and "bad behaivor" but we don't hear the same rhetoric being applied as vehemently to Hollywood and all of it's hyper-violent films and "heroes."

Quite the contrary; films like The Godfather and Rambo and shows like The Sopranos are worshipped by the culture at large. Oh, but "ooohh ooohhh, gangster rap is sooo violent and threatening!!" You get the picture...

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2008 12:58 AM

It was said that she posted her nice profile on a celeb dating site " M a r r y M i l l i o n a i r e . C o m " to seek for rich man to date. Many guys like her very much.

You are totally fucking ignorant!!! If you were living in my area of the hood in 1988 to 1992, that bullshit thought woulda never entered your fool head. "Dramatic put-on"?? THAT is ignorant!!

please, dear l.a. transplant, i'd be most interested in hearing you detail that statement a bit. why is that a bullshit statement? you don't think any of that attitude was fake? if what you're saying is that type of thinking was totally pure to the bone, than how the hell do you explain the joke that has become snoop dog or ice cube? those two are clowns these days when they used to be so bad ass. change of heart? getting soft with old age?

What the FUCK does Ice Cube and Snoop circa 2008 have to do with what we're TALKING about, which is 1988, 1989, 1990???

NWA weren't just a fucking PUT-ON, they were a part of the gun-slingin' HOOD. Their posse and the drug/turf wars in Compton were REAL you ignorant fuck. Do your fuckin' research, or talk to the people who lived there AT THAT TIME, and stop asking stupid-ass questions about what those two "clowns" are all about now.

History gets twisted and forgotten once children like you start making shit up and callin' it "real." You don't know shit!!!!

This Alicia Keys interview was brought to you by Louis Farrakhan.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2008 11:07 AM

It's not important what Ice Cube, or Snoop have become, it's about where they came from.
Maybe Gangsta Rap became a theme for record company, but Compton was for real.
L.A. Transplant is right.

Smileyoureoncamera,

I'm not sure you should be participating in this conversation with comments like this,

". then again, ice cube was bitching and complaining about burning hollywood down with public enemy back in the day, and he seems to be doing just fine as of late with his fake comedy/disney-for-crap films."

Ice Cube was in NWA.

You've probably gotten him confused with Chuck D. from Public Enemy. Even though, you know, there is nothing even remotely similar...

Posted by chad | April 15, 2008 1:13 PM

>>>>>>You've probably gotten him confused with Chuck D. from Public Enemy. Even though, you know, there is nothing even remotely similar...

um, yes, yes ice cube was in nwa. i wasn't doubting that fact at all. however, you my friend are the one who needs to do your research. 'Burn, Hollywood, Burn' of of fear of a black planet was public enemy w/ guests big daddy kane and ice cube.

so, you know, get YOUR facts straight.

Posted by youmyfriendare oncamera | April 15, 2008 1:22 PM

Youmyfriendareoncamera,

I stand corrected, my ignorance in the matter is obvious.

Sounds like Ms. Keys has been attending church with Obama. Blaming da' man for everything. Got to give her kudos for her timing. She doesn't seem to realize that it is really her bruthas that play and listen to the crap called gansta rap whom she is insulting. If da' man realy was responsible for it then look at all the idiots who mindlessly fell into it. The idiots are killing each other.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2008 11:22 PM

Sorry, I didn't preview this. I meant "if da' man really" not "realy"

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2008 11:25 PM

>>>>Quite the contrary; films like The Godfather and Rambo and shows like The Sopranos are worshipped by the culture at large. Oh, but "ooohh ooohhh, gangster rap is sooo violent and threatening!!" You get the picture...

When there are shootings like Columbine. When those kids are listening to heavy metal or playing M rated video games that is always brought up as an issue. So when will the gangsta rap be held accountable for lyrics such as Ice Cube singing about killing the police? When blacks murder police or anyone else for that matter, why aren't their cd cases gone thru and brought into evidence and into the media? Because they would "holla" racism and burn down and destroy the city as they did in the Rodney King case. That is the reason why O.J. got by with double murder. Because it came on the heels of the Rodney King trial and L.A. couldn't afford another savage attack on it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2008 11:45 PM

It's claims like this that keep black people in poverty

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 12:21 AM

really? and some 400 years of continued racial discrimination, social segregation, under funded schools and assassinations of prominent leaders probably hasn't played a role, i'm sure...YOU SIMPLE MINDED FUCKHEAD.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 2:22 AM

Ice Cube only talked about killing people who were out to brutalize and terrorize him FIRST. The same went for Malcolm X, too. As Malcolm X said, when African-Americans finally started standing up and arming themselves against the government (CIA, FBI "COINTELPRO") and police merely IN SELF DEFENSE, it was "ooooh oooh the blacks are becoming militant!!!" It's hilarious.

I don't see where the problem is in being determined to kill anyone who's bent on systematically suppressing you and terrorizing you; it seems only natural. It happens to be rather common in history, too. Only a hypocrite (or a moron) would stand by while the government, military or police act with impunity, and then get up in arms (pun intended) when the victims of their violence start threatening to fight back.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 2:37 AM

50 Cent responds to Alicia Keys -- click on the link in my sig. In short: He disagrees.

The article also notes that Keys claims the interview Blender printed was inaccurate, but Blender stands by it.
