when will someone just get her a mic stand

one of the great things about the original version of metal heart is chan's subtle, nuanced delivery. this sucked.
jim white, however, was brilliant.

>jim white, however, was brilliant.
agreed. jim white is always brilliant. it pains me to even think he's on that new record of hers. i'm just looking forward to a new dirty three release and tour.

the band killed it, chan's performance was pretty odd.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 11:44 AM
remember when she was crazy from drugs and alcohol? that needs to happen again.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 11:51 AM
Don't know why this was panned so hard. She is brilliant.

>She is brilliant.
hmm. by "brilliant" you mean she looks to be going into convulsions and trying to channel christina aguilera....then yes, she was indeed.
Posted by suncitygirl | April 2, 2008 11:59 AM
damned if you do, damned if you dont.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 12:04 PM
she's such an annoying phony now
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 12:05 PM
Yeah, it's so "annoying" and "phony" that she can actually get through a song without asking for more reverb now.
Posted by Anonymoose | April 2, 2008 12:18 PM
She moves like a weird polar bear...
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 12:41 PM
^^^^LOL I am DYING right now
"weird polar bear"=PERFECT DESCRIPTION
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 12:48 PM
do any of you have a pulse, that was ragin' full-on...
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 1:04 PM
i mean, what the fuck is her trip, man? something is seriously not right about her. it's like she's channeled the spirit of fucking sammy davis jr. or something. seriously, it's hard to even watch.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 1:24 PM
Hmm so much negative energy . Start your own band and do it better the then ... That is all
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 2:01 PM
Let's address this ... Annoying(opinion) ... Phony(no) ...
Doing well and free of the demons that almost kill her(yes) .. .
So the folks that want her to be the same ... Wake up it is 2008 not 1998 ... crying about it on blog sites won't bring it back , all your doing is circulating bad energy , and no one wants to hear your lame whiney indie(or so called) opinion ... Seriously while Chan and co are out touring the world trying to do something ... ya'll are sitting in a cubicle or at pizza hut looking for some meaning ... It is rock and roll ... it will make your life better , but it can't define you.
That is all ...

this was great- whats wrong with everyone?
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 3:17 PM
Obviously what's wrong with everyone is that their taste is not identical to your own 3:17. The very idea! Harumph!
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 3:21 PM
Seriously, does Matador have all their interns posting comments here? Or are people really that offended when others don't dig some singer they like? Either way it's weird. I thought she sucked even more when her publicists were marketing her as a "troubled artist." Whatever.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 3:26 PM
I agree with Letterman ... that was great!
Either you like her or you don't and I DO
Go back to writing and reading about the fucking new kids on the block or timberlake fcol!!!

So her performance was "odd." Was Chan Marshall ever NOT odd? It's part of her package. I guess some types of odd are considered cooler than others.
I don't see phoniness here. It looks to me like she's working something out--like how to perform without hiding behind a guitar or a piano or total darkness.
As far as wishing she was back on drugs and alcohol again, why don't we just bring back bear-baiting so we won't have to get our kicks watching human misery?

Does anyone else find it ironic that she's learned the moves that go along with belting out a song right at the same time that she stopped belting out songs. Granted, it sucked that she could barely finish a whole song, but when she sang, she sounded great. This throaty, raspy whisper thing that she's doing now makes no sense. It's like she's gained the confidence to be a celebrity but lost the confidence to sing.
I think she's at a crossroads. She needs to admit to herself that her old fanbase is long gone, and that's okay. If you want to be Mary J Blige, go be Mary J Blige. She's more than halfway there already.

I mean, she's got some decent songs. But, despite the arrogant lecture (courtesy of 2:10), I believe I can sum it up quicker: Wildly Overrated.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 5:04 PM
definitely overrated... but the performance was fine. oh: and i'd hit it.
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 6:15 PM
she's diana rossin' it
huh
Posted by conrad | April 2, 2008 7:20 PM
It's not that I don't like her, it's just that the performance is weird. It's like she is teasing herself with the mike, trying to bite it...
Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 7:29 PM
"This throaty, raspy whisper thing that she's doing now makes no sense."
I hate to say this, but she may have blown out her voice. Years of drinking, smoking, and touring can do that. Usually it'll come back with some rest, but if you push it too far you end up like Marianne Faithful. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing...
