He & Him
he and him

Info on Conor's latest venture below. No NYC date yet....

Conor Oberst is set to release a solo album on August 4th on Merge Records.

This recording was made in Tepoztlán, Morelos, México during the months of January and February 2008. In Tepoztlán, a place known for Aztec Magic and Extra-Terrestrial Sightings, a temporary studio was created in a mountain villa called Valle Místico at the outskirts of town. It was produced by Conor Oberst with much help from engineer and long time associate Andy LeMaster. A special band was assembled for the recording, known amongst themselves and to friends as The Mystic Valley Band. It was there at Valle Místico that Conor and the band lived and worked for that time in near perfect harmony, often unaware of the hour or the day. The result is his first solo album in thirteen years, following Water (1993), Here's To Special Treatment (1994) and Soundtrack To My Movie (1995). In that time he has recorded and preformed in many bands and musical projects including Commander Venus, Park Ave., Desaparecidos, and most notably Bright Eyes, his main musical vehicle for the past decade.

Conor Oberst will be touring this album throughout the summer and has already announced an appearance at September's Austin City Limits festival.

"Oh wow! Bright Eyes is going solo? Crazy!!!"

Someone needs to cool it on the coffee today

"[What the fuck is this?!?!?!]"

This is a way to change direction because his career is becoming stale and trite. I used to be a fan and now I am just over it.

holy shit!

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 11:53 AM

How it is "solo" if he is playing with The Mystic Valley Band?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 11:55 AM

This is like when Bob Pollard broke up GBV to go "solo". I think it is just a way for this guy to play some shows without having to play songs from the Bright Eyes albums.

I apologize for my prior comment. Conor Oberst should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Bob Pollard. Also, I'm sure the "Bright Eyes" name is contractually obligated to some other record company.

CONOR OWORST!

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 12:10 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 12:19 PM

i'm into it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 12:19 PM

He just wants to put out that speed metal-meets-rap album without scaring the NPR set.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 12:23 PM

he's just changing his name to what he always wanted to be. he couldnt be called conor obrest when no one gave a fuck who he was

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 12:32 PM

Well, at least the Merge promo tells the dumb American indie rocker what Tepoztlán is known for. I bet the locals there are even happier to know this pretensious dick-wad packed up his 'Mystic Valley Band' & left town.

GBV's second to last NYC show -- Bob Pollard onstage saying 'You know who I fucking hate? (drunken pause) Bright Eyes.' Heck, maybe that's why Conor is changing his name.

Doesn't Conor like own a label?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 2:01 PM

Yea him in his brother own saddle creek. So the name bright eyes is not "contractually obligated" to another label.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 2:26 PM

1:35 & 1:38 really offer so much insight huh?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 2:37 PM

"preformed"?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 2:46 PM

Doesn't Conor like own another label?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 2:53 PM

2:37 offers so much insight into how 1:35 and 1:38 offered no insight, huh?

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 2:54 PM

he owns his own label, yes. team love records, its on 1st ave and 9th or 10th st i believe. after starting his own label, signing to a major for overseas releases, and now releasing on merge.. id say he's straying away from saddle creek.

Posted by m | April 22, 2008 2:55 PM

What made Bob's bright eyes comment even more funny was that Conor was on the side of the stage.

Posted by Anonymous | April 22, 2008 3:08 PM

2:54 you're a very witty hipster, or douchebag, whichever you prefer. 3:08 I was at that same show. Great show it was. Long live GBV.

Bright Eyes isn't a single artist- Conor.

It's actually a kind of a band, between Mike Mogis and Conor Oberst.. most people don't realize that.. but Conor has clarified that in past interviews and such.

I am interested in seeing what he'll break away and do a bit. I mean this doesn't necessarily mean Bright Eyes is over obviously, it is just Conor reinventing himself again, just without the Saddle Creek backdrop he's usually associated with.. and people shouldn't judge the situation or the music.. (in general)
as it is his own personal view.. but if you do decide to do so.. at least listen, or get a good basic idea of the picture before claiming the art is bad. I respect Conor for what he decides to do in his life, and it is his choice. Conor will always be brilliant in my eyes, a true, passionate, and unconventional artist.
One of the greatest of our time.
That is my opinion, and I hold to it.

Music is not a possession, it is free for anyone and everyone.. if a certain artist or genre is not for you, don't listen to it.. and find something that you do connect with. :]

Peace and Love,

-Brendan
