DeVotchKa played (a short set @) Coachella 2008 - pics

photos by Ryan Muir

Coachella

A rising Denver band, DeVotchKa, walked off the stage before the end of its performance Saturday at the Coachella music festival in Southern California, one of the nation's largest independent music festivals. The four-member band was playing in 110-degree desert heat when Jeanie Schroder, who plays the standup bass and sousaphone, dropped her metal instrument and walked off the stage.

"She was holding a hot piece of metal in the afternoon sun and said, 'I can't do it, I'm dizzy and I'm done,' " said Rob Thomas, band manager. She did not receive medical attention. Other band members followed her. [Denver Post]

Devotchka's next NYC show is May 20th at Terminal 5 (an indoor venue). Tickets are still on sale. More tour dates here. More pictures below...

You don't see people complaining about playing their Strats OR Teles. Geez.

i have seen some incredibly portly individuals dominate halftime tuba sets at NCAA football games played in late august.

this chick needs to lay off the groupie sex / hot pockets.

Bunch of fuckin whiners....seriously, maybe if the band members were smart enough to just wear t-shirt/shorts like man man...it wouldn't been as bad....but instead they're trying to look stylish when they suck balls!!!

i hope they lost fans during coachella....

none of you must be from denver otherwise you would know how shitty a newspaper the Denver Post is. she wasn't playing the tuba at the time, it was her bass which she put down gently on their second to last song. pretty dramatic, huh?

i've played this festival, and then need to put something over the stage. it's crazy to try to play in that kind of heat in direct sunlight.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 7:37 PM

you know... i maybe COMPLETELY off the mark here... but maybe it's the black suits and dresses?

What a bunch of jackasses you all are. How can you not have any sympathy for a multi-instrumentalist group playing the heaviest of pieces in the middle of the day under the desert sun? You weaklings wouldn't last 5 seconds. Devotchka are a great band and I believe they just finished a European tour right before heading to Indio. That alone is exhausting, but factor in the heat and what she was playing, and the even the most acclimated among us would wilt. I can't wait to see them when they play NYC and show them the support they deserve. Fucking Man Man can jump around in the heat in their underwear all they want and won't earn an iota of respect from me because their version of The Muppets sing Tom Waits is unlistenable.

I would buy the Muppets doing Tom Waits the day it came out!

I was front row center for them at this concert, it was such a disappointment that they cut their set short. ):
