Explosions in the Sky are on tour, and they play Terminal 5 in NYC tonight (April 8, 2008). Ola Podirda & Lichens are opening.

Did anyone go to the show in Long Island two nights ago? How was that?

Yeah, NYC and Brooklyn was representin' at the Farmingdale show. Two words....CRAZY DONKEY!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 4:22 PM

i've never seen a better show than the first time i saw them play (northsix in brooklyn).

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 4:26 PM

farmindale was right on. explosions claimed it was their first show in long island, gave a shout out to the wu-tang clan and tore into great renditions of: memorial, greet death, the birth and death of the day & closed with the only moment we were alone. a long show by their standards, but no encore.

crazy donkey was small...mercury lounge size...but not loud enough!

i was at the grand rapids show on this tour. i expected the show to be good but had no idea how mindblowing it would be. the opening act Lichens was incredible also. definitely get there for his set. he sounds like he's from another planet.

Are tix still available at the door for thsi show?

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 5:26 PM

it's sold out but i saw some decent price tix on craigslist.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 6:06 PM

yeah, well nothing beats the first time i saw them opening for trail of dead at knitting factory and no one knew who they were

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 8:04 PM

Congrats guy, you win.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 8:10 PM

I love that old-fart-sitting-on-a-rocking-chair-I-was-there-first mentality.

You're soooo coool man! You saw them at the knit! You're like the Christopher Columbus of live music! Why are you anonymous? I want to meet you and we can hang and reminisce

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2008 8:13 PM

I think the funny thing about Anon 8:04 is the fact that they are not even a New York band, and tons of people saw them before they even left the state of Texas. The posters above have already done the proper mocking though. Off to the show...

Terminal 5 show was incredible!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 12:13 AM

yeah they were seriously fucking great tonight. they are definitely way overhyped but terminal 5 is a surprisingly awesome space for a band like this.

Posted by jason | April 9, 2008 12:20 AM

seriously, that was awesome... terminal 5 finally found the right sounding band to play... epic

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 12:46 AM

Did someone really just say Explosions in the Sky is way overhyped? By whom? I never read anything about them really and even Pitchfork doesn't go ga-ga over their albums. It was definitely weird to see so many people at Terminal 5 for them, but this band has been around forever...

Spoken by 2 people who obviously have never seen this band before or in smaller better places. You dopes.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 1:16 AM

arguing on the internet is stupid but i saw them play a year ago at the middle east downstairs in boston (600ish people). this band sounds fucking great in a huge venue and their energy and excitement of playing live is apparent in a small place or a huge place like t5. it was their single largest headlining show ever and you could tell they put everything they had into the show. last years show was great as well but this band seems to have only gotten tighter in the past year.

Posted by jason | April 9, 2008 1:25 AM

Arguing on the internet is stupid. So is pontificating so im just gonna leave it as i saw them the other night in a small place(farmingdale) and tonite at T5 and the smaller place was much more explosive. Plus tight is not a word i would use to describe this band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 1:33 AM

true, tight might not have been the best word, but lets say that they seem to work better as a cohesive group on stage now and sound better because of it.

Posted by jason | April 9, 2008 1:47 AM

Went and saw them in Farmingdale on Sunday night - it was a really great show. Nice setlist, and really good sound. It was an enjoyable time.

Just saw EITS for the first time last night. Wow, not sure what people are so excited about. The band is a total rip off of things that have come before and nowhere as original or interesting as a band like Mogwai or Mono.
I realized this wasn't the live band for me when they ended their set with that totally orchestrated metal synchronized guitar waving. To top it off, at 10.35pm they announced to a still full house they wouldn't come out for another song because they had 'given it their all' I've seen bands in their 50's play longer and harder. (Think Sonic Youth and Iron Maiden 'yes maiden') Wusses.

Bashing Terminal 5 has become so incredibly fashionable and predictable. That said, Terminal 5 sucks. The sound and sightlines are terrible unless you get there really early. Only about 40% of the crowd appeared to be listening. EITS type music doesn't really shine in an oversized space with bad sound for most of the room with a large cramped number of finnicky people only half-listening. But at the end of the day I like EITS enough to endure it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 8:48 AM

Terminal 5 is the new Daft Punk.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 9:05 AM

What time did Terminal 5 go on?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 9:38 AM

where was the singer?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 9:38 AM

Caught the Terminal 5 show last night. Twas my first time seeing them live after many moons hearing the hype. I quite enjoyed it and would prolly catch them live again, though I do think the EITS experience winds up being totally governed by the venue. Once I was out of the photo pit and into the crowd, it was nigh impossible to see anything. Some say you don't need to see EITS because of the kind of zone-out music they play. But that's exactly when I DO want to see them, so I can witness the complexities of what they're doing with their instruments. Otherwise, why not just stay home and listen to them on the ol' iPod? Judge for yourself -- I've got video from the show up over at tixgirl.com.

tixgirl:

i was the other guy in the photo pit last night. if you have a photo pass at terminal 5, security will 99% of the time let you into the VIP area on the second floor. with a wide angle lens you can get some nice shots of the venue or use a zoom to get interesting shots of the band on stage. plus you'll have a better chance of getting a good view of the stage compared to anywhere else in the venue since depending on the show it's not as crowded in there.

Posted by jason | April 9, 2008 11:04 AM

tixgirl- can you tell us what camera you are using to capture video? sounded excellent!

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 11:14 AM

Peter Berg was there. Explosions in the Sky to score the Dune remake. Also, I've been wondering this for awhile - does EITS count as emo?

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 11:14 AM

EITS counts as homo-core.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 11:55 AM

Terminal 5 is terrible if you actually want to see and hear the band.

Other than that, it's not so bad.

The bathrooms are nice.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 12:50 PM

agreed with NSFW. 1040pm and everyone was heading home after such short set? come on, that was a no-effort performance on their part. underwhelming show to be honest.

Posted by r | April 9, 2008 3:25 PM

By "short set," you mean only 90 minutes. Last night was probably the longest set I've ever seen that band play, and the fact that the show ended so early was not the band's decision. Terminal 5 has a "hard curfew" of 11PM on weeknights, so everyone had to be out by then. It was nice to see a band play for that long and not have half the crowd leave by the end because of the late hour.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:48 PM

Surprised to hear people thought the sound system suited this band. The sound was horrible last night. Horrible.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 4:59 PM

You don't know what you are talking about. The sound was actually quite good.

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 5:17 PM

I've seen several EITS shows and they've never done an encore.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 10:25 AM

"Terminal 5 has a "hard curfew" of 11PM on weeknight"

T5 does have a curfew, but I wouldn't call it hard. I have seen bands play where their encores went well past 11pm.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 10:30 AM

If you really needed an encore that night to appreciate the show, you need help.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 2:19 PM

1) I've never seen EITS play an encore.
2) To those that described the sound as being "horrible". Come on. It wasn't that bad. And it seems like every single show I go to, no matter what venue, there are always a bunch of people saying the sound was horrible. Just once I want to see a post that says, "the sound was really good last night!" If it is always so horrible for you people...stop going!

Posted by CN | April 10, 2008 6:42 PM

Thanks for the tip re: the VIP area -- I've tried at a couple shows with no luck, but I'll remember not to give up now that I know it works from time to time.

Folks also asked about what kind of camera took the video: It's a Sony DSC-W200. I'm thrilled with the audio quality. It constantly surprises the heck out of me.
