Feist - on Colbert Report (video), in NYC tonight/tomorrow

Feist begins her 2-night run at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC tonight. She (Feist, Ms Feist, Leslie or whatever you want to call her) also has upcoming shows at Carnegie Hall and in Prospect Park. Last night she was the guest of Stephen Colbert on TV. Videos from that below....

Feist is the off-key bastard daughter of the love affair between Alanis Morrisette and Ani DiFranco, and unfortunately inherited none of the talent.

What do they call they stuff? Oh yeah "it". Feist has it.

Maybe 1:58 can take a break from selling shoes or preparing lattes or whatever the fuck it is you do and fill us in on who you believe is talented.

Any thoughts on what time she is going on tonight?
Let the Daft Punk comments begin...

Just want to point out 1:58 named Alanis Morrisette as an example of talented. If you wouldn't mind coming to clean the coffee from my computer screen?

"Maybe 1:58 can take a break from selling shoes or preparing lattes or whatever the fuck it is you do and fill us in on who you believe is talented."
HA! yes, please, fill us all in on what the talented little singer is up to these days. rehashing yet another of her albums for it's __th anniv. release? hmm?

1:58 - I'm no massive fan of Feist, but "off-key?" That's just objectively, empirically, provable scientifically, untrue. Stop talking about music, please.

it is rad that she is popular - mainstream music is overflowing with female musicans with no talent, who are 18, and they only sell albums because they look good naked.
go feist!

Watch the video posted above. Concentrate on the word "heart" repeated several times, and "lies". Or is the off-key part some sort of intentional effect?
If you don't hear the Morrisette mimic in her delivery then you're just not paying any attention.

^^ Wow - I stand corrected - your standards of the highest degree! Any variation in pitch is "off-key" to you! You must have gone to Juliard or Berklee - congrats. Do you enjoy live music, or do you prefer pitch-corrected glossy pop recordings only? Teach us, please!

"ARE of the highest degree," I meant, for the record...

Feist haters/lovers aside. She didn't write 1234, but that's okay. She's talented. Over-rated? Probably. Whatever, she's probably suffering from over-exposure right now and/or over-entertainment. I'd like to see more political statements, frankly. Had Hollywood had any balls,we wouldn't have to rely on boring Canadian musicians for it.

If Feist were a venue she would be Terminal 5 just after they ran out of Brooklyn Lager.
Posted by jim | April 29, 2008 4:29 PM
or Market Hotel right after the cops show up.

hey, she's not off key, she stays within the key completely, and isn't flat or sharp. She just scoops to the notes, but she always scoops from a note within the key. also, she only does it a couple of times. you must be deaf. you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, especially if you reference of talent is ani difranco or alanis morrisette.

You mean the two acts that she so obviously rips off stylistically?
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 5:29 PM
dude, but shes hjawt
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 5:49 PM
she'd probably be in key if she wasn't so successful

Having somehow had not much previous exposure to Feist I watched the video out of curiosity after reading this comments thread. Didn't blow me away or anything, but it's neither off-key (unless you're being incredibly harsh), nor does Alanis Morisette spring to mind as a primary comparison.. she doesn't have that keening belting-out-the-notes thing like Morisette does (thankfully), it's more of a folky/bluesy delivery.

i saw her in philly two nights ago and was totally blown away. maybe some of these hipsters would like her more if she changed her name to holy feist or black feist or something like that.

Dipsters should remind themselves that most artists could give a fuck about the dipster demographic. Dipsters are notoriously fickle and hardly loyal to artists. I'm sure Feist gives a shit whether or not anonymous posters/posers demand she stay in key. Big fan base - will probably just get bigger over time.

she does not 'rip' off alanis morisette or ani difrano. ani has aggressive lyrics and does constant glottal attacks when she sings. alanis morissette belts and writes 'confessional' songs. feist does none of that. its infuriating to read those comments. she sings cute smart pop songs with a breathy,blusey-jazz voice. this isn't an argument about who is better its about accurate references. whoever if posting those comments sounds jealous.

i also saw feist in philly the other night and found her performance completely enchanting and intoxicating. this video is not even close to what i saw the other night talk show performances always suck. her voice is smooth and clear and the tone is unlike any other i've heard. what's the point of hating? maybe it's just not for you. hating is easy --- doing it better is the difficult thing.

Hayden's pretty good. He opened the show. Anyone - how'd he do?
Posted by Eric | May 1, 2008 10:34 PM
I saw the 4/30 show. If you like Hayden, he was good. He's not my cup o' tea, but he was funny and performed well.
And for the record, Feist's bad, or the Feist band, however it is properly viewed, was awesome.
