Gossip @ Webster Hall

As a friend said right after the show, "I'm not sure how anyone can hate on that band". Gossip rocks and Beth Ditto is confident and knows how to entertain, not to mention spread love (except towards John McCain, Rolling Stone, Alanis Morissette, jocks and Pitchfork). Webster Hall was packed tight and it was great when most of the crowd was dancing and going crazy together. That happened during 'Standing in the Way of Control' at the end of the set and then again in the encore. Beth finished the show with a huge crowd-on-stage sing-along. She had the whole place chanting "We are important". Murray Hill helped make the show even more entertaining by MCing before the band came out, after they left the stage the first time, and after they left again (April 15, 2008). More pics below....

i think she's more famous for being a fat pig than for her music.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 10:31 AM

holy crap how many cameras were there? it looks like it was worse than gnarls at highline.

Posted by GOPster | April 16, 2008 10:33 AM

There were definitely a lot of cameras. I think the Gnarls show had more accredited photographers though.

Posted by Bao | April 16, 2008 10:47 AM

go Gossip!

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 10:50 AM

seriously, the fucking cameras were ruining the show at times. i don't get why everyone needs to document every show they go to. it's a headache to the people that are there for the music and to have a good time.

Posted by michael | April 16, 2008 10:59 AM

"i think she's more famous for being a fat pig than for her music."

Why don't you talk to us about how small is your dick, instead of calling people "pig". You'll feel a whole lot better about it...

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 10:59 AM

Yeah that girl in the front that was constantly sticking her camera and flash in her face. I don't mind if you shoot discreetly but that's a bit much. At least be a bit considerate of those around you.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:03 AM

is Beth pregnant??

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:08 AM

"is Beth pregnant??"

yes, with Murray Hill's baby.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:10 AM

Thought they would be bigger than Web Hall? Anyone can get a show there these days. Aren't they the future of Columbia Records?
Saw them in Houston on Thanksgiving in 2001 with Har Mar. How fun.

Posted by josef | April 16, 2008 11:15 AM

yes, the camera front and center being raised up in front of everybody's view was incredibly fucking annoying.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:19 AM

Setlist anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:28 AM

bao's shots are awesome as always.

Posted by bryan | April 16, 2008 11:33 AM

Since I was a girl up front who was taking pictures (but mostly video) of the show, the comment above may be talking about me, though I was certainly not the only one taking photos. I apologize if I annoyed anyone, but my friend and I did get a chance to talk to Beth after the show and she very adorably said, "Thank y'all so much for being up front!" and gave us big kisses on the cheek. As someone who clearly isn't afraid to speak her mind, I'm sure she would have told us if she was bothered by it. I just couldn't help documenting a kickass performance of my favorite band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:42 AM

everyone should stop with flash photography. you insolent cunts burn out our retinas.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:43 AM

***my last comment was not aimed at bao, just in general

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:46 AM

that's really mature. nice language. we can bitch about people taking pics but then we all look at them on the internet

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:47 AM

"Since I was a girl up front who was taking pictures (but mostly video) of the show, the comment above may be talking about me"

The girl lifting her hand up wasn't taking video. She was the girl who was cold at Union Hall

Cool pics Bao. Took you awhile to 425 it up. :)

"The girl lifting her hand up wasn't taking video. She was the girl who was cold at Union Hall"

Thanks! I'm glad it wasn't me! The last thing I would want to do is bother other kickass Gossip fans!

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 11:58 AM

damn girl look goooood!

Posted by corey | April 16, 2008 12:23 PM

"i think she's more famous for being a fat pig than for her music."LOL....

Painfully ugly indeed. I wouldn't pay shit to see that hippo sing..

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 12:35 PM

Thanks Bryan and Ryan. I was up til 2 am doing the 425 even with the action.

Posted by Bao | April 16, 2008 12:44 PM

"Painfully ugly indeed. I wouldn't pay shit to see that hippo sing.."

Come on...

Beth is the queen and I would pay a lot of money to see her sing.

Posted by Tina | April 16, 2008 12:45 PM

who's got the 10 and a half?

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 12:53 PM

calling beth ditto an ugly fat pig is about the stupidest and most immature thing ever. if you hate her, why are you even reading about her? her whole message is against hateful people like you. at one point during the show last night she was talking about how there's so much unnecessary hate in the world, and shitty people being assholes to people who just try and try and try and aren't hurting anyone. so, before you call her a fat ugly bitch, i suggest you listen to "standing in the way of control" and in her own words "kiss my ass, kiss my fat ass, kiss my dyke ass, kiss my queer ass..."

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 1:08 PM

Welcome sadly to the world of the internet where people can say their opions behind a keyboard instead of in person. Most people definatley wouldn't talk this way face to face with people.

Posted by C | April 16, 2008 1:17 PM

Something needs to be done about the number of photographers nowadays. I think a time limit works best. The worst part is most photographers do not even work for music mags or sites, just bloggers and flickr.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 1:18 PM

was Bradford Cox there? did it sell out?

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 1:30 PM

Beth is cool, but they could use some other songs. One other song. At this point they're the Smash Mouth of our time.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 1:31 PM

Cuz telling people to 'kiss my ass' isn't negative? She's just as hypocritical as you are. There will always to supporters and detractors - that's the way of the world. I personally think she's unhealthy looking, but if she rocks for you then great. But, don't think you're better than some of these Anons because you hate on photogs or bloggers or frat boys, instead of hating on obese people or gay people, etc. Haters are haters, sister, and it doesn't matter who's your target. Hypocrites disgust me most... and I would say that to your face.

"Something needs to be done about the number of photographers nowadays. I think a time limit works best. The worst part is most photographers do not even work for music mags or sites, just bloggers and flickr."

Please bring back the days of "first three songs only," and then the burly guard takes your camera and yanks the film out of it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 2:45 PM

"Please bring back the days of "first three songs only," and then the burly guard takes your camera and yanks the film out of it. "

It's a few photographers giving everyone else a bad name. Bao for instance doesn't bother anyone. He doesn't use flash. He doesn't hold up the camera. He doesn't push people. He doesn't block people. Ultimately he is there to enjoy the show too. And he is nice.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 2:50 PM

yea, what's up with this holdin the camera up and away from your face to shoot? shooting that way puts you in a class with the Paparazzi hacks of TMZ

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 2:57 PM

I know you wanna hit that!

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2008 3:36 PM

yo she's pretty fat

Posted by eponymous | April 16, 2008 11:10 PM

that photo whore rebecca needs to get jumped.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:56 AM

"I apologize if I annoyed anyone, but my friend and I did get a chance to talk to Beth after the show and she very adorably said, "Thank y'all so much for being up front!" "

So you didn't annoy the band, only the spectators!!! Good for you...

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 6:38 AM

Rent a long lens or something. Someone should start a Luddite-like group and start smashing those goddam cameras - especially the cameras of those that make MONEY off ruining our experience.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:55 AM

some of rebeccas photos are pretty strange, the double exposure stuff. Im pretty sure if I had her equipment I could take better photos.

However you guys need to chill. blogs are good because the take information out of hands of few and into hands of many. you want to go back to getting your info from RS or Spin and thats it?

and photos, I think yeah maybe people should be more discreet. take a snap and put camera away, you dont need hundreds and hundreds of exposures of every band do you?

Boa rules.

the hypocrisy and ignorance of people supposedly into indie and punk music* is always astounding. anyone even remotely familiar with the spirit of these forms of music would know that they [allegedly] call into question mainstream norms and ideals and imagine new ways of being in the world based on a different set of ethics and politics.

but some folks here, folks who i'm sure consider themselves serious indie and punk music aficionados, can find nothing better to talk about than how Beth Ditto *looks*--no critique of her lyrics, of her voice, of the band's sound and whether or not it's original or adds anything--nope, just comments about whether she's worthy of being looked at.

thank god sexism in the indie and punk music scenes is alive and well. what would we do without hypocrisy from folks who consider themselves so fucking progressive and outside the mainstream?

*and yes, i realize that these terms may not effectively capture The Gossip's sound but excuse the shorthand and just pay attention to the point of my comment.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 2:51 PM

the gossip have and always will be a mediocre rock band. the reason no one talks about the music, is because there really isn't anything to talk about. it's nothing new, and there are a lot of other bands out there that are doing the 'pop indie-punk' genre better. admitedly ditto does have a powerful voice, but the only reason that band had gotten any press is because of the bands image.

you also cant fault us discussing her image, when that's pretty much the only thing she does in every one of her interviews.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 2:57 PM

I actually like their music, but even if their fame was just because she's a fat queer girl screaming her brains out---am I the only one who thinks that's pretty awesome?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 3:04 PM

When a photographer at a show get's more comments than the performance something is wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 7:36 PM

"It's a few photographers giving everyone else a bad name."

It's so true. This girl Rebecca is the only concert photographer I have seen get trashed on BV, much less any website, blog, or forum. A little inconvenience is one thing, blocking the paying audience's view during a show for the whole venue behind you is another.

It's something to note that she's getting famous around here, for and ruining shows.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 3:32 AM

woah, please chill out, people. how idle, bored and bitter must you be to take it out on one girl photog?

firstly, it's quite impossible for one girl to ruin everyone's show by standing on the lower level. the stage is too far above the crowd for that! it makes no sense. you're just blowing steam form being a fucking loser under your bosses and seeing someone else do what they love and get away with it.

secondly, there are tons of other photogs that do the same thing and more often less professionally than she does.

photographers are a reality. you have to deal with it, like security, occasional bad sound and douchebags. just get it. if they weren't necessary or too much of an annoyance, they'd be gone by now.

i easily equate all the hate to this one girl with the top comments about Beth being a fat pig.

tasteless, inane bullshit from people with too much time on their hands.

get a fucking life.
or a job you like. same thing.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 11:27 AM

no one is idle or bored. they are simply tired of this particular photographer and her complete disregard for how other people should enjoy the show and not be distracted by her unprofessional approach. she is the equivalent of a paparazzi photog stalking a celeberty

but see for yourself. go to a show and watch her. i'm sure lots of people will now.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 12:17 PM

i tend to agree with 11:27am.

she's clearly a professional seeing how her work is being published in spin.

also, i wouldn't mind having that job and am kind of jealous: she must get into all the shows for free, is right up there with all the bands, is prob friends with all those bands, too (and they must love her for all the publicity she gets them).

just let it go. she's only doing her job.
geez.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 2:39 PM

this is that one time when i'll chime in with my thoughts, though i typically stay away from getting into flame wars on here.

i know becky. she's perhaps the nicest person one will ever meet; not a mean bone in her body.
she's exceptionally considerate with regard to party-goers and is very polite and apologetic about having to be upfront. anyone suggesting the opposite is being presumptuous and uninformed.

this is pretty much the same case as the one with Todd P. if you get out there and are in the public spotlight, chances are that you'll catch way more shit than compliments. the people who appreciate Todd's work, for example, just keep it to themselves. the people who like to bitch and whine will post on there for no fucking reason other than seeing their writing on the interwebs.

to those people, i say this: you have a number of options.

a) continue to whine – she doesn't give a crap. she goes to all the best shows for free all the time, gets her work published in major magazines and really couldn't care less about your inconsequential and poorly formed opinion.

b) do something about it; sure – try it. someone pushed her at 200 Orchard at the Shy Child show once. i was there and saw it. i also saw that guy eat a piece of sidewalk outside. becky's bed sty biker friends are very protective, to say the least and she is never alone. i'm pretty sure that guy lost a tooth.

c) enjoy your fat american lives and try to focus on things that are truly wrong with the world.

jesus, what losers.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 2:48 PM

it took you (her friends) long enough to chime in

the fact still remains, her work is mediocre and she annoys the fans of the bands

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 9:02 PM

this poor girl. you people are psychotic. her photos are amazing. way better than the cheapo crap on bv.

Posted by anoymous@anonymous.com | April 18, 2008 9:22 PM

"it took you (her friends) long enough to chime in.
the fact still remains, her work is mediocre and she annoys the fans of the bands."

who are you, the photo editor of Rolling Stone?
oh wait, they wanted her photos, too.

shut up.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 10:19 PM

I would like to dedicate "Standing in the Way of My Enjoying the Concert While She's Taking Photos" to Becky.

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2008 8:59 AM

this is like saying a tall person standing in front of you ruined your show1

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2008 5:03 PM

she was at the Walkmen show at McCarren pool (an outdoor show during a somewhat cloudy day last summer), and spent 75% of their set photographing the crowd with a flash, blinding everyone in the first few rows. A flash. During the day. Outdoors.

mediocre photos are not worth annoying fans watching a show

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2008 9:01 PM

she is getting a bad reputation from pretty much everyone in the new york media world for being an overzealous shit-talker. it'll come back to haunt her. and why her photos are in SPIN, i have no idea... they need new editors. once they fold, her only client will be the shitty online village voice, which is laughable

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2008 9:06 PM

why complain abou all the photographers? all these pictures are marvelous. maybe a nuisance but inevitably beneficial to all users of the internet.

also, the whole fat bitch hippo thing is incredibly lame.feel free to judge but keep your mean opinions to yourself and don't ruin everyone else's day.

Posted by aja | June 10, 2008 2:23 PM

Some time before, I needed to buy a good house for my corporation but I did not earn enough money and couldn't purchase something. Thank God my mother adviced to try to take the business loans at banks. Thence, I did so and used to be satisfied with my credit loan.
