Okay, fine. All weight comments aside. They sound great. Seems more than a novelty, albeit based on one song. What can I say?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 9:50 AM

I watched 39 seconds. Awful, just absolutely awful.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 9:55 AM

i get the feeling that this would be pretty boring if ditto was your standard 90lb hipster girl.

more cushion for the pushin'

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 9:56 AM

Not bad sounding, but the Bellrays already did this music better ten years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 9:59 AM

makes me want to listen to the soulwax remix

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:00 AM

Fuck what anyone says, Beth has some PIPES! Novelty my ass!

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:01 AM

Yeah this was a pretty great performance. I loved it when she'd scream. yay!

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:09 AM

"Awful"

Are you sure you just watched the same video I did?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:12 AM

wow, honestly I'd always pictured a skinny black girl.. she does have a hell of a voice

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:13 AM

that was tha bomb!

sure brings back memories of when they played the factory people party at sxsw 3 years ago.

Posted by freddy kruger | April 17, 2008 10:15 AM

I've bagged on her weight countless times here but my GOD that's a phenomenal performance.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | April 17, 2008 10:32 AM

paul schaffer has really let himself go...

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:34 AM

She can sing, but man, Rock and Roll music sounds so dead inside without a bass player.
I have the same problem with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:36 AM

Well, she's comfortable in her own skin. I like that.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:43 AM

Wow, that was great. Three thumbs up.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:44 AM

that's PUNK ROCK? A fucking disco beat and a hipster playing every riff from the past ten years? this is garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:49 AM

fat girl fetishists: "she has great pipes and she rocks"

objective people: "terrible screaming over amateur unoriginal music"

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:56 AM

i'd hit it

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:03 AM

as a former athlete, i often wonder what kind of fuel other athletes, performers, even public speakers use before they get up and do what they do. so, after watching live video of this apparently famous 'beth ditto', i am curious - does she eat a carb-heavy, protein-heavy thanksgiving dinner before or after her performance? or both? i mean just maintaining that weight, especially after a 60-90 minute live performance has got to take some serious calorie intake. thoughts anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:06 AM

"will you pay for it" what kind of question is that???

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:10 AM

say what you will about being comfortable in your own skin yadda yadda, but if she took the initiative and got into shape, she wouldn't be wouldn't be struggling to catch her breath after singing for a minute and 45 seconds. plus, it'd be great to see her live past 40.

and is she tiny or did david letterman become 7 feet tall overnight?

Posted by nick | April 17, 2008 11:14 AM

she is tiny and he is tall

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:18 AM

Forget singing, she can scream!!

Posted by Jen | April 17, 2008 11:20 AM

bias against fat people=only acceptable form of prejudice

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:25 AM

holy crap that was the most derivative fifth-generation "indie" nonsense I've ever seen. this is a buzz band? someone tell me one original approach this band takes. without the flashy gimmick of the "singer" this band is nothing. and fat or not, she's awful. as someone above mentioned, she sings great for 70 seconds before she runs out of breath.

Posted by triangle | April 17, 2008 11:36 AM

"bias against fat people=only acceptable form of prejudice"

Oh please, obesity is not something you are born into. People can't choose their sex, orientation or color. Obesity is a choice.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:37 AM

I believe the term is "buxom"

Posted by yo mama | April 17, 2008 11:39 AM

got to 2:12 before i wanted to blow my brains out. geez. ditto or no ditto, that shit was boring/ and i have nothing against bigger people, but kinda annoying when shes catching her breath every 20 seconds, i wonder what an hour long show is like.

Posted by josh | April 17, 2008 11:42 AM

i accept no excuse for any living person to be that size / overweight. what a mess. weak...

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:42 AM

Hey BV, any infor on Bloc Party tour this summer, i saw this http://phillytla.blogspot.com/
Peace

Posted by Jp | April 17, 2008 11:46 AM

you are a fucking moron if you honestly think all fat people are just fat because they're too fucking lazy to put down the ho ho and go exercise.
Is being incredibly skinny a choice? Read up on your medical studies, assholes.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:14 PM

this song is 2.5 years old

why the hell are they performing it on a late night talk show?

Posted by chris | April 17, 2008 12:29 PM

red lasso SUCKS

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:30 PM

who the fuck chooses to be obese?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:35 PM

also, pls. notice no bassist because the guitarist on the fender jazzmaster is so fucking rad. what could people possibly have against rock outs like this? why can't you see the forest for the knees?

Posted by nick courage | April 17, 2008 12:42 PM

well what I personally have against it is that it's horribly derivative, and gimmicky (look! a fat singer! oooh! she's outspoken and gay!!!). I'm not saying they should be flogged or anything, I just think personally they kind of suck.
PS - having a great guitar player doesn't mean your band wouldn't sound even better with a solid bass player.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:48 PM

this band is an insulated scenester's wet dream

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:50 PM

Gibson Thunderbird, NOT Fender Jazzmaster. How stupid are you. God, go die!

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:50 PM

i accept no excuse for any living person to be that size / overweight. what a mess. weak...

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 11:42 AM

You are equally an asshole and a moron. You need punched in your smug ugly face.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 12:53 PM

@anonymous 12:48 - they're trying out a bass player for the new album is the word on the street. i don't agree with your gimmicky comment because she was clearly fat and gay before she started singing in the gossip, and i don't see why she should stop being fat and gay just because it's a thing now. i agree with your derivative comment, but with a bored sigh and a gesture toward every record ever made.

not liking them just because you don't like them, that's fine.

Posted by nick courage | April 17, 2008 12:53 PM

"i accept no excuse for any living person to be that size / overweight. what a mess. weak..."

Being fat, you can lose the weight, being born stupid, there is nothing you can do about it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 1:23 PM

pretty mean voice. i'm overweight too

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 1:27 PM

of course she shouldn't stop being gay - i'm not going to touch the fat thing. but it gets to a point where it's style/image over substance, which seems to be the vibe of this band.
there's also a difference between having influences and breaking out the same 10th generation dance-punk riffs and beats that have been going on all decade and not even trying to do anything new with it.

That being said, any and all of this can be forgiven with a good song, which this, to me, wasn't.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 1:28 PM

you people dogging on overweight people are morons.

maybe you can't deal with the fact that your parents are a bunch of fat asses back in the midwest shopping for twinkies at costco or sam's club.

Posted by freddy kruger | April 17, 2008 1:46 PM

i don't care what she looks like or who she sleeps with. the music is still zzzzz either way.

Posted by grace6697 | April 17, 2008 1:58 PM

that fat white woman sounds like she ate a fat black woman. great performance.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 2:23 PM

"Gibson Thunderbird, NOT Fender Jazzmaster. How stupid are you. God, go die!"

Gibson Firebird, actually. Have a nice day.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 3:33 PM

@12:50 PM - are you serious? you're the guy playing pennies from heaven on every overpriced, 3000 dollar piece of polyurethane in every shopping mall guitar center in america that i never ever wanted to meet. stay anonymous, it suits you!

Posted by nickcourage | April 17, 2008 3:34 PM

Yo, that was great. You must be a really bitter person who is incapable of enjoying yourself if you couldn't enjoy that bit of fine music.

and um, "novelty"? "buzz band"? don't read blogs much do you? this band has been around for years now.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 4:15 PM

"Oh please, obesity is not something you are born into. Obesity is a choice."

not true. absolutely not true.

do also believe that if you touch a fatty you'll instantly gain 5 lbs? only 1 lb. if you poke 'em with a stick...

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 5:27 PM

yeah i could see how easy it is to criticize this band.. i couldnt believe when they caught fire as i saw them well before in a small club in vancouver and saw they had a real cult following there yet i felt like it was a tad overblown... but whatever we are free

Posted by martha | April 17, 2008 5:37 PM

i don't think that i can handle ditto after she claimed in spin magazine that "the world was anti-female"

Posted by simon | April 17, 2008 5:44 PM

These comments make me ashamed of the world

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 6:57 PM

some dudes can't handle the idea of a woman who isn't ashamed of her body or talent. must be very intimidating.

keep posting about gossip, bv! love 'em.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 8:50 PM

Who cares is Beth Ditto is fat or gay? What she looks like shouldn't matter (I personally think she's HOT as Hell!!!). Lemmy Kilmister (Anyone know Motorhead?) is an ugly S.O.B. who growls. But he still ROCKS!!!
This was my first time seeing Gossip, and I LOVED it! And, anyone remember when the Ramones (by their OWN admission) were talentless and derivitive?

Posted by K-dog | April 18, 2008 12:44 AM

^^Rickrolling has jumped the shark.

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 1:56 AM

I can't wait to see what Rick Rubin pulls out of them.
