Handsome Furs played Bowery, Terminal 5 w/ Spoon tonight
Handsome Furs @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - April 6, 2008 (Jinners)

On Sunday I went to Bowery Ballroom (which I would like a lot more if it weren't usually packed with drunk hipsters that aren't into the band playing) and I saw the Handsome Furs. I love that band (it's my favorite of the Wolf Parade offshoots), but the music (which consists of Dan Boeckner on guitar and Alexei Perry on synth) is tricky to pull off live. But, as stated, I love it, I know Plague Park like the back of my hand, so it was great. If you'd never heard the music before, you might enjoy it less. [Another New York Playwright's Blog]Handsome Furs play another NYC show tonight (April 9) at Terminal 5.

If I would've known they were playing with Spoon I would've just waited and paid $20 tonight and seen both bands instead of paying $15 for just Handsome Furs.

"If I would've known they were playing with Spoon I would've just waited and paid $20 tonight and seen both bands instead of paying $15 for just Handsome Furs."
But you would have to see them at Terminal 5 instead of the Bowery Ballroom.

Spoon will be worth the trek to T5. Handsome Furs will be worth the snotty bartenders.

handsome furs were incredible.
the band that played before (violens?) were fucking horrible and then one of them tried to come out and dance on stage behind the furs and i really wanted to strangle him.
really.

I haven't heard Violens but they used to be called Lansing-Dreiden and their stuff was good. Maybe they changed styles when they changed their name?
As for the Handsome Furs show, no reason to go when they played a couple months ago at Mercury Lounge. Plus, the Dodos were ripping up the Mercury Lounge the same night as the Furs' Bowery show.

actually, violens were pretty good in my opinion. it's nice to see them playing

violens... AWFUL. that boston trance schtick... painful to watch. handsome furs... amazing as always. people that talk during shows... i still dont get why they do that.
-my 2 cents

Anyone have set times?

i thought violens was just an l-d offshoot?

Handsome Furs rocked the house.

Handsome Furs are really good, but they don't really "rock" anything.
Yes, Violens is a Lansing-Dreiden offshoot.

Violens (L-D's new group) were AMAZING at Bowery.
You haters are smoking crack (or perhaps thinking of the other band who played, whom I missed, or maybe that homophobic "comedy" act between bands).

nope, not mistaken. it really was the violens and they really did bore my pants off.

It was my first venture to Terminal 5. I really liked it, and we were stuck way in the back by the bar. Spoon are always great, last night was no exception. I wish they wouldn't play 'I Turn My Camera On' last though.

Spoon was great, but the free Camel tickets turned the thing into a douchefest on the floor. Dude, put down the metal horns.

They should have finished the 2nd encore with "Jonathan Fisk" and left it at that. I'm done hearing about your damn camera being turned on.

Does anybody have a setlist for Spoon?
Posted by James Snuka | April 10, 2008 10:54 AM
I love Spoon but I thought that was the worst show I've seen since a show several years ago at Irving. Mostly BD and the sound generally were way off. Something seemed to be wrong with BD's voice and he was trying to compensate the whole time. He struggled with softer parts and several times had difficulty with softer beginnings to songs. And he seemed out of it. He was so far out of tune at the beginning of Japanese Cigarette Case it was embarassing. I've never seen him like that and I've seen them plenty. The sound guy SUCKED. A heavy delayed reverb used once on vox is fine, used 45x is a bit much. Backing vox had soooo much reverb sometimes sounded like they were underwater. I still had fun because of the songs but performance-wise, esp. compared to the Bowery show a year ago and the Battery Park show, it wasn't close to where they can be.

BMD, agree the verb-vox effect was way overused.

no Sister Jack?
Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 11:58 AM
Nope, and not a single song from A Series of Sneaks. Kinda disappointing, though Nefarious was a nice touch.

i hate bands that dont embrace their past especially when their fans want it. hope they enjoy their free camels and choke on them in hell
Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 12:12 PM
That Camel shit is seriously distasteful, and not just b/c it's smoking. It's like, this horrible, painfully-obvious fake attempt at "connecting with the kids". Utter Gag.

Does anyone know who the "diehipster.com guy" is? The site is pretty amazing actually... I'm just curious, what kind of freak is that pissed off and has that much time on his/her hands?
Could it be a bitter old man? A guido? Polish? Whoever it is, I almost feel sorry for them because they seem so tormented. It's ironic that they don't realize that they are far more pathetic and empty than any of the so-called hipsters that their site mocks.
Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 9:11 AM
It seems like that 75 year old Italian Polish guy pushed your button. You may be a so-called hipster 9:11AM.
