Ironic Smiley figurine seller hates Studio B too

Ironic Smileys

While I wanted to be glad about a live music facility in the neighborhood, Studio B has been nothing but a crappy neighbor. They seemingly have no crowd control as people enter and exit the club, and take no notice of the fact that they are located on the edge of a residential neighborhood. On show nights, people scream drunkenly up and down Calyer, or even better when the windows are open, sit on our stoops to make phone calls at extremely high volume.
AnarchyTrash is strewn everywhere on nights after shows, garbage bags pile up outside for rats to run around in, graffiti that is obviously tied into the previous night's show has gotten worse (Anarchy symbol anyone?) and parking is impossible. Beer bottles end up in the planters, and someone even went so far as to steal a lily in bloom, pot and all, last summer. I love when people fuck with my car, too.

Via newyorkshitty's research on the DOB online database, it looks as though the roof garden is completely without permits, so we'll have to see what we can do from this end to make their lives a little harder. Just as they have done to everyone's lives on my street. [The Know-All]

The blogger that wrote that is also selling the "ironic" figurines pictured above on Craigslist. They're "hoping some hipster will put them in their bar or whatever".

Tickets for Yacht, Parts & Labor, Ellen Allien, Spank Rock and other upcoming shows at Studio B are on sale. If you go, don't forget to be nice to the neighbors (for Studio B's sake at least).

For $30 a ticket, I expect to throw some ironic figurines off the rooftop to vent my rage.

HOLY FUCK!! My friends and I collect Smileys in PA!! I can't believe they made it to BV! This made my Monday.

Um, it's only Greenpoint, who cares?

Some call it "progress." And it ain't gonna stop. Complain all you want, nothing's gonna change. Party people don't give a flying fuck about the residents of the neighborhood they're visiting. Just think of what you have to look forward to and enjoy: shouting fights and breaking bottles most nights from midnight to 3 or 4 a.m.! Yay New York City! Ain't life grand?

the word "ironic" is almost as overused as the word "hipster" now. what exactly makes these figures ironic?

i do think that Studio B is a good venue, and i've seen some great shows there, but the last few times i've been, i've been more and more disappointed. it's overcrowded to the point that you're miserable, and the lines are unnecessarily long to get in.

i won't blame the owners for the rich kid douchebags that have no sense of crowd etiquette though (you don't need to touch me when you walk by or stand practically on someone else's feet), but it is pretty damn annoying.

Basically, the rich kid yuppies-in-training---you know them as "hipsters" I guess---are slowly ruining everything east of the Williamsburg Bridge.

Sadly, they are overtaking my formerly low-key neighborhood around the Graham Avenue stop. Before long, it's going to be Bedford Avenue Jr. It's almost there already, and it fucking sucks.

wow this story is really a classic tale of evil versus evil.

I would doubt the Studio B electronic music crowd is throwing up anarchy symbols.

"Sadly, they are overtaking my formerly low-key neighborhood around the Graham Avenue stop. "

Are you originally from that area? Or did you move there only 3 years ago and decide to call it *my* formerly low-key neighborhood. If it is the latter, us natives didn't like it when YOU moved in.

I love it when kids fuck ON my car..

Not sure if there's any connection or that it matters, but I posted my "research" of the illegal roof garden in the comments several hours before NY Shitty, just for the record.

We all love music and venues to be near nice venues, but when they're too near and disrespect the locals, that blows. If anybody wants some free advice--from a building code and zoning consultant with a B.Arch. from the Cooper Union no less--feel free to reach out in the comments.

You're not going to be able to get a vacate order issued, most likely, but you could certainly rack up a ton of FD and DOB violations that carry increasing civil penalties. It would certainly grab the owner's attention and may even get him to stop people from having sex on the neighbors' cars.

Lastly, please don't forget that the application I found disapproved isn't even for the rooftop garden--only the second floor. Unless they are literally tearing the roof off, there is no application on file with the DOB to legalize such. That's a cold hard fact the ownership probably doesn't want to address if they have a rooftop garden party planned in 2 weeks.

Anonymous in PA: Don't you want 26 more Smileys?? Please?

jp: ironic because they are called SMILEYS, when they are really just fucking creepy.

x_x: the anarchy symbols always appear after the Saturday afternoon all ages punk rock shows.

FMBill: sorry for giving the wrong credit. And thanks for the heads up. "The roof deck" is going in on the second floor with a retractable roof of some kind. Either way, no permit. Starting with 311...

ironic smiley seller needs some loving. ironic is used as if calling a movie quirky?

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2008 1:06 AM

Fire Marshall Bill: According to an email a neighbor got from someone at Studio B, they are indeed quite literally tearing the roof off of the second floor, not intending to build something on top of the building. Also from someone else whose building's backyard is against the back of the venue, they have built a deck outside.

Posted by calyer st. | April 15, 2008 9:09 PM

I for one have seen some great djs at this venue and think the roof deck idea sounds awesome. I'll be at the Ellen Allien show in May. Although, the crowds at the bar sometimes leave a bit to be desired, I do have one thing to say.

At this point, based on comments I hear everywhere...anyone that doesn't wear sweat pants or business suits out of their house is a hipster. Seriously, that word gets thrown around way too much. I know what kind of people I don't like (trust me)...but I don't lump everyone that dresses the same way in to one fucking catagory and hate on all of them. I surpassed that way of thinking when I left high school. I can tell you right now, that regardless of how anybody dresses or looks, there are a lot of douche bags out there in the world. This internet craze of calling everyone a hipster should really stop. People used to just hate on jocks/meatheads...now its cool to hate on hipsters. How original to always have someone to hate.

Based on the sheer number of people hating on 'hipsters'...seems like there must be a whole lot of commenters who have grown up with a lot of issues.

You can assume that I am sticking up for the hipster elite...but in fact I'm trying to draw attention to this ridiculous trend...which in itself is VERY hipster. If you must use that term.
