L Magazine's 2008 '8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear'

L MAgazine

As you probably saw by now if you live in NYC, the new issue of L Magazine features their yearly "8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear". It's a list that BrooklynVegan readers are now famous for tearing apart last year. This year's list:

There were also a few honorable mentions, like Mussels.

BONUS: They asked bartenders what their 'Best Concert Experience Ever' was.

Can anyone explain High Places to me? because right now i'm totally confused by all the positive press they get versus my own experience of them being one of my 3 least favorite live shows ever.

Glad to see This is Ivy League on the list. Excellent selection.

Posted by Frederick Foxrtrott | April 28, 2008 1:54 PM

yeah, this is ivy league is a good choice. the pains of being pure at heart, too.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 1:55 PM

Very cool they chose Violens. My favorite new band (although it helps that the frontdood is of course Lansing-Dreiden).

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 1:56 PM

i don't know much about most the bands on this list, but i do know that i really like the pains of being pure at heart.

Posted by janelle | April 28, 2008 2:00 PM

violens blow.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:00 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:00 PM

Team Robespierre's album was awful, like really really awful.

Just listen to some generic punk band's demo and play a casio over it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:06 PM

Violens? really? is that a joke of some sort? talk about boring.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:09 PM

WHERE THE FUCK IS DAFT PUNK?!?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:45 PM

Last year's list was great. Lost some respect for L Magazine with this year's list. There's much better stuff in NYC than this list. Just seems lazy and thrown together at the last minute.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:49 PM

so then who is missing?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:52 PM

I can tell you who's missing in 2 words: Billy Joel.

Posted by greg | April 28, 2008 2:55 PM

dude daft punk is from new jersey. that doesn't count.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 2:55 PM

is the guy on the left talking on his cell phone in the photo?

wtf?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 3:00 PM

you can't say "there's much better stuff than this list" and then not give a couple examples. that's bullshit.

Pains of Being Pure At Heart were awesome on Friday at Glasslands. They played a bunch of new songs which were all great! I am told they are working on their first full length right now. I, for one, am looking forward to it immensely.

I'll second These Are Powers.

Parts & Labor maybe? I'd say they're no more exposed than High Places, and they're certainly lower profile than VW was last year. Shooting Spires at the very least.

I might throw The Octagon in there, too.

Posted by feedbacker | April 28, 2008 5:13 PM

where is my mind?!?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:19 PM

Parts & Labor's been around for 100 years.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:23 PM

these are powers are terrible

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:25 PM

fiasco should be on there!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:28 PM

Parts & Labor played my cousin's bar mitzvah but in '94.

eh, where have you guys been?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:35 PM

Salt & Samovar

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:37 PM

1 band you need to hear: COIN UNDER TONGUE

Posted by Liane | April 28, 2008 5:47 PM

"where's High Places?"

High Places were away playing shows when the shoot was done. Which is why they are actually popular outside of NY. Unlike a lot of bands, they tour.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:47 PM

These Are Powers is the absolutely worst band I have seen in quite some time. The worst kind of amateur noise with some idiot jumping around and screaming into the microphone. The bass player can't even keep time with the fxcking pre-recorded beats. Simply fucking awful.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:48 PM

Perhaps:

Aa (Big A Little a)?

Escort?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 5:51 PM

'This is Ivy League'

really? REALLY?

so mediocre it actually hurts. Like why even bother? Either be really shit or really amazing, that mediocre indie-pop thing is so old.

this list needs more Fleet Foxes and Rafter, and less everything else.

Posted by Mandy | April 28, 2008 6:03 PM

yeasayer anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 6:05 PM

Yes, definitely more bands from Seattle, like Fleet Foxes.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 6:06 PM

oh i gues fleet foxes aren't a nyc band are they. rafter probably isn't idk.

Posted by Mandy | April 28, 2008 6:06 PM

i didn't read it carefully anonymous!

Posted by Mandy | April 28, 2008 6:07 PM

wow 8 of the worst ny bands ever!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 6:18 PM

NYC Dream Team:

Stay Fucked (now called Stats)
Acid Tiger
High Places
Zs
Drunk Driver
Animal
Behold...the Arctopus

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 6:34 PM

yeasayer should definitely be on here.

penis

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 6:45 PM

But Yeasayer are getting enough exposure. I believe the point of this thing is to give exposure to bands who no one but the most tuned in music heads have ever heard of. Thus, no mention of MGMT, A Place To Bury Strangers, etc., etc.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 6:55 PM

- Telefon Tel Aviv
- Portishead
- Texas is the Reason
- Chicago
- Boston
- Alabama

where is Apes and Androids? why haven't they taken over the world yet? it has to happen.

tiger city anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:42 AM

quoted:

Violens:
FORMED: Summer-ish/Fall-ish 2007

FAVORITE NYC VENUE: “Bowery Ballroom has been the most fun so far.”

BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A BAND IN NYC: “You can get girls to take their tops off at shows really easily.”

AND THE WORST: “Leaving boobs at shows and lugging gear back to your practice space in eight different cabs.”

what kind of sexist bullshit is this? is this a joke? I say boycott this band.

This year, everyone hates Vampire Weekend.

Last year, they were the only good band on the list by what most comments said.

I'm confused.

Fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 5:19 PM

do "rules" and "awesome" mean something different than they used to?

Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 12:15 AM

10:54...do you not know that the ultimate purpose of all artistic endeavours is bare chested young women?

this is why people start bands.

Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 12:01 PM

"rules" and "awesome" are kind of lame expressions. I prefer "destroys" and "kills"
